Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bernard Fergusson was one of Orde Wingate's Column Commanders in the heroic but battered Chindit expedition behind Japanese lines in Burma in 1943. By 1944 Wingate had persuaded Churchill and Roosevelt that a bigger force, on the same unorthodox lines, could make a strategic difference. Aged 32, Fergusson returned to Burma as part of this, as a Brigadier, leading the only Brigade in the new force which entered Burma on foot. It was one of four Brigades which established well-defended strongholds within Japanese-occupied Burma. Fergusson also reflects candidly, and often humorously, on different aspects of the campaign. These include the ingenuity and sheer courage of the US Army Air Force pilots who flew in supplies and evacuated wounded. One glider pilot whom Fergusson saw making a particularly bad landing turned out to be Jackie Coogan, child star of Chaplin's The Kid, and later known as Uncle Fenster of the Addams Family. In apparently light hearted, but often profound sections, he analyses the management of a large and diverse force, up against physical extremes far from normal amenities and command structures; the importance of maintaining morale and of medical management; and, not least, an immediate portrait of Wingate himself, whose death at a crucial stage of the campaign and the conflicting or at least confusing orders he left behind directly affected Fergusson's men and the fate of the campaign. The Wild Green Earth follows the author's account of the 1943 campaign, Beyond the Chindwin. Both were written with the events, and reactions even the smells fresh in the author's mind, and vividly but sensitively conveyed. The excitement of the narrative remains today. And the reflections are timeless, fascinating for those with an interest in leadership and motivation as much as for readers of military history.

As fate would have it, they were the future of humankind, with visions of rebuilding the human race on Europa, a distant moon of Jupiter. But in an attempt to mold this new world in his own image, the psychotic moon base leader, Soren, commandeers the ship for his select few and abandons those who might resist his unique vision of their future - condemning them to certain death. Left behind on the moon with a handful of desperate survivors and dwindling resources, Tess Robinson, a rising star in NASA with a troubled past, is thrust into a position where she must make peace with her ghosts if they are to survive. Now, in a frantic race against time and unimaginable odds, they must return to the broken earth if they hope to make the journey to Europa; but they must survive not only the final destructive forces unleashed on the planet, but the barbaric survivors they left behind. The Act of Cessation was launched during the transition between the Bush and Obama administrations with dire implications because of the rampant rumor of Obama being a closet-smoker. This book is a parody about a brilliant writer who lives two lives – one in the media industry interfacing with celebrities, a number of whom make cameo appearances. The other is his secret life as the last smoker on earth. Facilitated by nicotine stimulation, the protagonist is on a mission to return literature to society as a closet-smoker, writing the great American novel in his surreptitious sojourns to the underground. If apprehended by the anti-tobacco police he will be incarcerated in a place called the Midnight Express and never heard from again.

Book excerpt: Thy Kingdom Come is a panoramic overview of the present reign of Jesus Christ at the right hand of God the Father and of the future consummation of that reign. It presents three authoritative apostolic New Testament guidelines for the interpretation of the Old Testament prophecies. It fairly examines the three main positions on the millennium and offers scriptural conclusions that incorporate elements of truth from all three. Detailed expositions of the 110th Psalm and the book of Revelation are based on the apostolic guidelines. Harold Patterson was born in Portland, Oregon in 1920. In 1942 he was appointed as a Patrol Inspector in the Immigration Border Patrol, and was assigned to work on the Mexican border in Southern California. His career as a Border Patrolman was interrupted by military service during WW II. During his military service he met and married Shirley Van Hamm in Denver, Colorado. In 1951 Harold and Shirley enrolled in BIOLA Bible College in Los Angeles. After graduation they accepted teaching positions in Taholah, Washington on the Quinault Indian Reservation. They remained in Taholah for 17 years and served the Indian community in various ways during that time. To upgrade his professional skills Harold earned the Bachelor of Education degree at Seattle Pacific University and the Master of Education degree at the University of Washington. In 1972 Mr. Patterson was appointed Associate Supervisor of Indian Education for the State of Washington, and served in that capacity for nine years. He also served as a lay minister and Bible teacher in various churches. In 1972 the Pattersons moved to a ranch at Brooklyn, Washington. Throughout the years Harold maintained a very close relationship with the Quinault people, and in 2005 he was adopted as an enrolled member of the Quinault Indian Nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Galaxy Reborn It is the 43rd century and humanity occupies a substantial chunk of the Orion Spur, the small galactic arm in which Sol is located. Homo sapiens Terra has become Homo sapiens Galactica. Following the invention of faster-than-light travel in 2530, the Great Hegira went from a trickle to a flood as human-occupied space expanded at an exponential clip. Over the centuries, rivalries grew, as did star system navies. When widespread war finally came, it raged across entire sectors. Mass bombardments of enemy planets took their toll. Much that had been built during the preceding thousand years was smashed in flashes of nuclear fusion. A dark age descended. Eventually, a new Pax Galactica took hold. The return of stability brought with it a renaissance. Much knowledge that had been lost was regained. Much, but not all. On worlds across human space, parents told their children stories of a place where once dwelt knights and princesses, magicians and dragons, where bold warriors sallied forth to victory or defeat. What the children did not learn was where this magical place could be found. The years of chaos had robbed them of that information. The stellar coordinates of Sol were lost. And with them, the location of Planet Earth.

Book excerpt: A journey around the United States in search of the truth about the threat of earthquakes leads to spine-tingling discoveries, unnerving experts, and ultimately the kind of preparations that will actually help guide us through disasters. It’s a road trip full of surprises. Earthquakes. You need to worry about them only if you’re in San Francisco, right? Wrong. We have been making enormous changes to subterranean America, and Mother Earth, as always, has been making some of her own. . . . The consequences for our real estate, our civil engineering, and our communities will be huge because they will include earthquakes most of us do not expect and cannot imagine—at least not without reading Quakeland. Kathryn Miles descends into mines in the Northwest, dissects Mississippi levee engineering studies, uncovers the horrific risks of an earthquake in the Northeast, and interviews the seismologists, structual engineers, and emergency managers around the country who are addressing this ground shaking threat. As Miles relates, the era of human-induced earthquakes began in 1962 in Colorado after millions of gallons of chemical-weapon waste was pumped underground in the Rockies. More than 1,500 quakes over the following seven years resulted. The Department of Energy plans to dump spent nuclear rods in the same way. Evidence of fracking’s seismological impact continues to mount. . . . Humans as well as fault lines built our “quakeland”. What will happen when Memphis, home of FedEx's 1.5-million-packages-a-day hub, goes offline as a result of an earthquake along the unstable Reelfoot Fault? FEMA has estimated that a modest 7.0 magnitude quake (twenty of these happen per year around the world) along the Wasatch Fault under Salt Lake City would put a $33 billion dent in our economy. When the Fukushima reactor melted down, tens of thousands were displaced. If New York’s Indian Point nuclear power plant blows, ten million people will be displaced. How would that evacuation even begin? Kathryn Miles’ tour of our land is as fascinating and frightening as it is irresistibly compelling.
