It remains to be seen whether they will survive again... The apocalypse begins for some of our survivors we will follow through the series. They live in a small northern New York town; few of them know each other but as circumstances dictate, they will be thrown together and have to depend on one another for survival.

Book excerpt: Earth is the latest science fiction novel from multiple Hugo Award winner Ben Bova, author of Apes and Angels and Survival A wave of lethal gamma radiation is expanding from the core of the Milky Way galaxy at the speed of light, killing everything in its path. The countdown to when the death wave will reach Earth and the rest of the solar system is at two thousand years. Humans were helped by the Predecessors, who provided shielding generators that can protect the solar system. In return, the Predecessors asked humankind's help to save other intelligent species that are in danger of being annihilated. But what of Earth? With the Death Wave no longer a threat to humanity, humans have spread out and colonized all the worlds of the solar system. The technology of the Predecessors has made Earth a paradise, at least on the surface. But a policy of exiling discontented young people to the outer planets and asteroid mines has led to a deep divide between the new worlds and the homeworld, and those tensions are about to explode into open war. Book excerpt: Candace ~ March 7thThe streets are a mess. I've spent too much of the last week hiding inside my apartment. Most of my friends, and that's a joke, I didn't have anyone I could actually call a friend; So I guess I would say most of my acquaintances believed my grandparents were alive and that I lived here with them. They weren't. I didn't. I kind of let that belief grow, fostered it, I guess.I planted the seed by saying it was my Nana Pans' apartment. You can see the Asian in me, so it made sense to them that she was my Nana. But I look more like I'm a Native American than African American and Japanese. It's just the way the blood mixed, as my father used to say. But Native American or Asian, they could see it in my face. And this neighborhood is predominantly Asian. Mostly older people. There were two older Asian women that lived in the building. They probably believed one of those women was my Nana, and I didn't correct them.I can't tell you why I did that. I guess I wanted that separation. I didn't want them, anyone, to get to know me well. My plan had been to dance, earn enough money for school - Criminal Justice - and go back to Syracuse. Pretend none of this part of my life had ever happened. Some plan. It seemed workable. I wondered over what Jimmy V. had said to me. Did he see something in me that I didn't, or was he just generalizing? It doesn't matter now I suppose. My Grandmother passed away two years ago. The apartment she had lived in was just a part of the building that she owned. Nana Pan, my mother's mother, had rented the rest of the building out. The man who had lived with her was not my Grandfather - he had died before I was born - but her brother who had come ten years before from Japan. They spoke little English. People outside of the neighborhood often thought they were man and wife. She didn't bother correcting them, my mother had told me. Nana Pan thought that most Americans were superficial and really didn't care, so what was the use in explaining anything to them? Maybe that's where I got my deceptiveness from.I had left the house as it was. Collected rents through an agency. For all anyone knew, I was just another tenant. Of course Jimmy V. had known. He had mentioned it to me. But Jimmy knew everything there was to know about everyone. That was part of his business. It probably kept him alive. So I stayed and waited. I believed someone would show up and tell me what to do. But no one did. I saw a few people wander by yesterday, probably looking for other people, but I stayed inside. I don't know why, what all my reasons were. A lot of fear, I think. There have been earthquakes. The house is damaged. I went outside today and really looked at it. It is off the foundation and leaning. I should have gotten out of it the other night when I knew it was bad. It's just dumb luck it hasn't fallen in on me and killed me.It doesn't matter now though. I met a few others today, and I'm leaving with them. I don't know if I'll stay with them. I really don't know what to expect from life anymore.I'm taking this and my gun with me. Writing this made me feel alive. I don't know how better to say it.I'll write more here I think. I just don't know when, or where I'll be.

High school sophomore Miranda's disbelief turns to fear in a split second when an asteroid knocks the moon closer to Earth, like "one marble hits another." The result is catastrophic. How can her family prepare for the future when worldwide tsunamis are wiping out the coasts, earthquakes are rocking the continents, and volcanic ash is blocking out the sun? As August turns dark and wintery in northeastern Pennsylvania, Miranda, her two brothers, and their mother retreat to the unexpected safe haven of their sunroom, where they subsist on stockpiled food and limited water in the warmth of a wood-burning stove. Told in a year's worth of journal entries, this heart-pounding story chronicles Miranda's struggle to hold on to the most important resource of all--hope--in an increasingly desperate and unfamiliar world. An extraordinary series debut Susan Beth Pfeffer has written several companion novels to Life As We Knew It, including The Dead and the Gone, This World We Live In, and The Shade of the Moon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Depictions of sex, violence, and crime abound in many of today's movies, sometimes making it seem that the idyllic life has vanished-even from our imaginations. But as shown in this unique book, paradise has not always been lost. For many years, depictions of heaven, earthly paradises, and utopias were common in popular films. Illustrated throughout with intriguing, rare stills and organized to provide historical context, Visions of Paradise surveys a huge array of films that have offered us glimpses of life free from strife, devoid of pain and privation, and full of harmony. In films such as Moana, White Shadows in the South Seas, The Green Pastures, Heaven Can Wait, The Enchanted Forest, The Bishop's Wife, Carousel, Bikini Beach, and Elvira Madigan, characters and the audience partake in a vision of personal freedom and safety-a zone of privilege and protection that transcends the demands of daily existence. Many of the films discussed are from the 1960s-perhaps the most edenic decade in contemporary cinema, when everything seemed possible and radical change was taken for granted. As Dixon makes clear, however, these films have not disappeared with the dreams of a generation; they continue to resonate today, offering a tonic to the darker visions that have replaced them.

Book excerpt: An investigation of the connection between ancient world catastrophe myths and modern scientific evidence of a galactic destruction cycle • Provides scientific evidence of past Earth-wide catastrophes and their galactic superwave origins • Decodes the ancient message encrypted in the zodiac constellations and symbolism of the Sphinx • Describes how explosions of our Galaxy’s core pose a threat to humanity in the future Many ancient myths from around the world tell of catastrophic destruction by fire and flood. These ubiquitous legends are so extreme that they are often dismissed as imaginative exaggerations. In Earth Under Fire, Paul LaViolette connects these "myths" to recent scientific findings in astronomy, geology, and archaeology to reconstruct the details of prehistoric global disasters and to explain how similar tragedies could recur in the near future. Compelled by his decryption of an ancient warning hidden in zodiac constellation lore, LaViolette worked with information from many scientific sources, including astronomical observations, polar ice core measurements, and other geological data, to confirm that our Galaxy’s core exploded near the end of the last ice age. This explosion unleashed a barrage of cosmic rays and enveloped the solar system in a dense nebula, which led to periods of persistent darkness, frigid cold, severe solar storms, searing heat, and mountainous floods that plagued mankind for many generations. Linking his scientific findings to details preserved in the myths and monuments of ancient civilizations, he demonstrates how past civilizations accurately recorded the causes of these cataclysmic events, knowledge of which may be crucial for the human race to survive the next catastrophic superwave cycle. This information reveals the intelligence and ingenuity of our ancestors who, when faced with extinction, found the means to warn us that the apocalypse that destroyed them could occur once again.

Book excerpt: The end has come for most of the world's population. Small groups of survivors are picking up the pieces... Learning to live again... When the sun began to peek over the top of the ridge on the opposite shore of the Black river, everyone filed out to the two remaining trucks. It had been decided that Mike and Jan would stay behind while the others went in search of the stolen truck. They switched on and tested two sets of F.M. radios. "The range is normally only about two miles or so, but it's not like there's anything to interfere with them anymore," Tom said. "We'll take three with us, and you keep the other here to monitor us, or if they come back here," Tom finished. "Do you think that's a possibility?" Janet Dove asked. "I doubt it, Dear," Bob told her with a reassuring smile. "It's just to be safe." Mike walked over to Candace. Her eyes met his. He kissed her softly, and her arms slipped around him. "Don't worry," she whispered, "I'll be careful. And I'll make sure they're careful." She kissed him and pulled back. Mike stared at the face of the two way radio for a long second and then watched her get into the Suburban. Bob got into the front seat with her. Her eyes met his once more, and she smiled reassuringly, then started the Suburban and fell in behind Tom as he drove the big State truck out across the pavement. Mike and Janet stood quietly as the two trucks drove away. Neither of them wanted to go back inside the cave. The sun was up and warming the old asphalt of the road where it passed in front of the cave, and what little snow remained was already beginning to melt. "Left here," The radio squawked. It sounded like Lydia. "Behind you," came an answer that sounded like Bob. Mike shifted the 30-30 Deer rifle he held in one hand and thumbed off the strap that held his Nine Millimeter in his web holster. Janet Dove grimaced and then thumbed the safety off the shotgun she was holding. A short clip protruded from the base of the shotgun, just forward of the trigger. She had two more clips in a small pouch on her side, as well as a fully loaded Three Eighty in a tooled leather side holster she wore. What must we look like, Mike thought. Aloud he said, "They'll be fine." "Really?" Janet Dove asked. "I truly hope so. I truly do." The next twenty minutes went by slowly. Occasional squawks of directions came from the radio, and in the distance the sound of both trucks could still be heard. The silence broke all at once. The radio squealed in Mike's hand. One word jumped clearly from the static... "Jesus!"... Mike couldn't tell from whom. A crashing sound accompanied it, and in the far distance gunfire erupted in the still, previously quiet morning air. The squeal from the radio abruptly cut off and it fell back to low static. In the distance the sound of gunfire continued for what seemed like ten minutes, but was probably no more than thirty or forty seconds in reality. Mike keyed the radio, "Candace," he screamed. "Candace?" Gunfire broke out again in the distance. The fast... POP, POP, POP of semi automatic gunfire, but the sharp crack of a heavy rifle too. No answer came back over the radio. Janet Dove made a small strangled sound in the back of her throat and a low sob slipped from her mouth. "No, God, no," she whispered.

The lives of the most advanced humans on Earth are portrayed as they struggle to survive in a post cold war, government run institution designed with dark secrets. Each member of this unique brotherhood is carrying a special ability that sets them apart from our world. The recorded life of the most powerful man in existence is examined as he discovers when he is a boy that he has an advanced brain. Tim Walker’s evolved brain gives him the ability for higher cognitive thinking, perceiving without the use of eyes and psychokinesis. He realizes at a young age that he is superior to us in every way. This knowledge coupled with his abilities makes Tim extremely dangerous to us as we try to cope with his existence. Also as we learn and understand why nature created such superior humans we start to realize that we are not the true heirs of the planet Earth after all ...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of how American democracy and early Wesleyan Methodism wed. It is the story not of the institutional church but of a concept fathered by John Wesley and American democracy--egalitarian universalism. Anytime something new appears, it needs an engine to push it along. Francis Asbury, his circuit riders, America's early poets, and the Black slaves became that engine. This book will show how egalitarian universalism, as defined by the New Testament, became the concept that guided the development of America's new democracy. The book will also show how this revolutionary concept was squeezed when the Civil War rushed in. Had it not been for the gospel writer and his Luke-Acts, American democracy and Methodism might have been forever lost.

His will to progress at his passion has improved his hunger for knowledge through word play, metaphors, and puns to express his thoughts among societies young & old. "The Black Soapbox" is the long anticipated follow up volume to his first book, "The Sunshine from Behind a Mountain." (2006) In this new volume, he takes you deep into his psyche and distributes real thoughts to the world about love, gang violence, black thought, real world, and timeless issues that involves our society today. When asked about the title, he stated that" Black" illustrates his ethnicity as well as the intergalactic thoughts he shares. "Soapbox" is derived from when someone has something to address to the masses, they "get on their soapbox", and pour out their thoughts and feelings to society, which silhouettes the title, "The Black Soapbox." From a humorous point of view, he simply smiles, shrugs his shoulders, and says, "I guess I'm a brother with a lot to say through prose and poetry." Once you open the first few pages and let the wisdom of his poetry grasp you from the beginning to end with its realism, you will feel as if he is talking to you!
