Download or read book Convulsed States written by Jonathan Todd Hancock and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2021-02-17 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Madrid earthquakes of 1811–12 were the strongest temblors in the North American interior in at least the past five centuries. From the Great Plains to the Atlantic Coast and from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico, a broad cast of thinkers struggled to explain these seemingly unprecedented natural phenomena. They summoned a range of traditions of inquiry into the natural world and drew connections among signs of environmental, spiritual, and political disorder on the cusp of the War of 1812. Drawn from extensive archival research, Convulsed States probes their interpretations to offer insights into revivalism, nation remaking, and the relationship between religious and political authority across Native nations and the United States in the early nineteenth century. With a compelling narrative and rigorous comparative analysis, Jonathan Todd Hancock uses the earthquakes to bridge historical fields and shed new light on this pivotal era of nation remaking. Through varied peoples' efforts to come to grips with the New Madrid earthquakes, Hancock reframes early nineteenth-century North America as a site where all of its inhabitants wrestled with fundamental human questions amid prophecies, political reinventions, and war.

Download or read book Earthquakes Prophesied written by Stanley Hoerman and published by Charisma Media. This book was released on 2015-12 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, God has used earthquakes to prove His presence, deliver His people, execute His wrath, or demonstrate His power. In the future, the Bible says, earthquakes will also punctuate significant happenings set for the last days. The writings of more than two dozen individuals in church history who have prophesied specific earthquakes for the end times are compiled in this book by Stanley Hoerman and Bob Armstrong. Included are the prophecies of St. Hildegard from the twelfth century, Mother Shipton from the sixteenth century, William Branham from the twentieth century, and current Christians such as Jim Bakker. This trumpet call for believers to "get ready" for the end times offers a historical thread of prophetic expressions, each pointing us toward dramatic seismic events to come at the end of the age.
Book Synopsis Thinking on Earthquakes in Early Modern Europe by : Rienk Vermij
Download or read book Thinking on Earthquakes in Early Modern Europe written by Rienk Vermij and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-16 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first extensive study of ideas on earthquakes before the Lisbon earthquake in 1755. The earthquake had a deep impact on European culture, and the reactions to it stood in a long tradition that, before this study, had yet to be explored in detail. Thinking on Earthquakes investigates both scholarly theories and views that were propagated among the early modern European population. Through a chronological approach, Vermij reveals that in contrast to the Ancient and medieval philosophers who suggested rational explanations for earthquakes, supernatural ideas made a powerful comeback in the sixteenth century. By analysing a variety of sources such as pamphlets, sermons, and treatises, this study shows how changes in the ideas on earthquakes were a result of social and political demands as well as from improvements in the means of communication, rather than from scientific methods. Thus, Vermij presents an illuminating case for the production of knowledge in early modern Europe. A range of events are explored, including the Ferrara earthquake in 1570 and the Vienna earthquake in 1590, making this study an invaluable source for students and scholars of the history of science and the history of ideas in early modern Europe.

Readers will learn about secret governmental programs designed to harness the enormous power in our atmosphere for military purposes, causing climate disturbances and earthquake stimulation. The record-breaking heat waves we are experiencing across the US, causing droughts and destructive storms, are signs of an ailing earth. The questions we should ask ourselves are: 1.What is the true cause of the climate disturbances? 2.Is it possible that atmospheric disturbances in the ionosphere are the result of governmental pursuits? 3.Does the Bible reveal the cause for the extreme weather patterns we are experiencing? The research presented in this work is designed to shed light on these devastating acts against nature.

This book was released on 2018-07-09 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barahin-e-Ahmadiyya Part V was completed after a delay of twenty-three years since Parts I to IV were published. This period served to corroborate the Promised Messiah's(as) mission because it proved that the prophecies documented in the earlier parts came true against all odds, and he had God's full support, for God would not have spared a false claimant for such a long time. When the Promised Messiah(as) began writing the earlier parts of Barahin-e-Ahmadiyya, he was a solitary man of the most meagre means living in the remote village of Qadian. By the time he wrote Part V, the help of Allah the Exalted had blessed him with international renown with every resource at his disposal and a flourishing community numbering into hundreds of thousands. In short, Barahin-e-Ahmadiyya Part V is the consummation of arguments in support of the divine origin of the Holy Quran and the Prophethood of the Holy Prophet Muhammad(sas). It is also a living testimony of the claims of the Promised Messiah(as) to be the divinely ordained Messiah of the Latter Days.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The whole world of nature appears in our day to be in revolt, with all her unprecedented disturbances. And how clearly are the nations preparing by granting unrestrained powers to individual men, such as we note in Russia, Germany, Italy, and in our own country,—all preparing for the one man prophesied by our Lord in John 5:43: ‘I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive Me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.’ We are surely in the world-age of the feet of iron mixed with miry clay of Daniel’s image. “Let me repeat that this book, so full of spiritual meat and helpful, illustrative anecdotes, so interesting while so splendidly setting forth these vital, scattered Bible teachings, is destined to reach many hearts and to build up many Christians in a more vital, Spirit-filled faith.” —From the Introduction by Howard A. Kelly
Book Synopsis If the Egyptians Drowned in the Red Sea where are Pharaoh's Chariots? by : Benjamin Edidin Scolnic
Download or read book If the Egyptians Drowned in the Red Sea where are Pharaoh's Chariots? written by Benjamin Edidin Scolnic and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2005 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the Bible true? Was the Garden of Eden a real place that can be found on a map? Was there a Flood? Did a Hebrew man rise to great power in Egypt? Were the Israelites slaves in Egypt? Did they escape from bondage and were they saved from the pursuing Egyptians? Did the prophets correctly predict many of the major events in Israelite history? Were Elijah and Elisha agents in a great assassination plot? Did Amos become famous because of an accurate forecast? In thinking about the questions of biblical factuality, some embrace a rigid skepticism and are quick to dismiss the accuracy of the biblical narratives without weighing the evidence. They are content to read the Bible for its metaphorical and literary truths, forgetting that the Bible is based on the history of an ancient people. Fundamentalists, on the other hand, have the strong desire to find hard proof that the biblical facts are facts, only to be disappointed and frustrated. But is it reasonable to expect such proof? Archaeology and comparative texts must be examined for what they realistically can be asked to provide. In a series of readable essays written in an engaging manner and a positive mode, author Benjamin Edidin Scolnic evaluates the biblical texts in the light of all the information we possess at this time. Scolnic asks the reader to join the ongoing dialogue between faith and history by carefully reviewing the textual and material evidence with an open mind. He does not so much seek to prove or disprove the Bible, but rather attempts to find middle ground through the exploration of its historical dimension.

Book Synopsis The Lost History of the New Madrid Earthquakes by : Conevery Bolton Valencius
Download or read book The Lost History of the New Madrid Earthquakes written by Conevery Bolton Valencius and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-09-25 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From December 1811 to February 1812, massive earthquakes shook the middle Mississippi Valley, collapsing homes, snapping large trees midtrunk, and briefly but dramatically reversing the flow of the continent’s mightiest river. For decades, people puzzled over the causes of the quakes, but by the time the nation began to recover from the Civil War, the New Madrid earthquakes had been essentially forgotten. In The Lost History of the New Madrid Earthquakes, Conevery Bolton Valencius remembers this major environmental disaster, demonstrating how events that have been long forgotten, even denied and ridiculed as tall tales, were in fact enormously important at the time of their occurrence, and continue to affect us today. Valencius weaves together scientific and historical evidence to demonstrate the vast role the New Madrid earthquakes played in the United States in the early nineteenth century, shaping the settlement patterns of early western Cherokees and other Indians, heightening the credibility of Tecumseh and Tenskwatawa for their Indian League in the War of 1812, giving force to frontier religious revival, and spreading scientific inquiry. Moving into the present, Valencius explores the intertwined reasons—environmental, scientific, social, and economic—why something as consequential as major earthquakes can be lost from public knowledge, offering a cautionary tale in a world struggling to respond to global climate change amid widespread willful denial. Engagingly written and ambitiously researched—both in the scientific literature and the writings of the time—The Lost History of the New Madrid Earthquakes will be an important resource in environmental history, geology, and seismology, as well as history of science and medicine and early American and Native American history.
