Book excerpt: "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” ~John 8:32 There have been millions of quotations written and spoken by brilliant minds. Many capturing wisdom about life and how we can best go about living it. For me, these words from Jesus would be at the very top of the list. He is offering in thirteen words a profound insight into ourselves and the great life available to us, but seldom lived by most. His words capture the design woven into our being from millions of years of evolution. A design in which we are able to resonate with truth and free to live the great life. If only we're willing to seek and know it. If only we're willing to seek the truth about what we really need to know about God, ego, and ourselves. If only we're willing to unlearn so much non-truth we have been taught and which we have taught ourselves about each of these.

Book excerpt: In this thought-provoking book, Peter Moore examines the often overlooked issues concerning human mortality, the fragile ways in which the dead can be said to “live on” in earthly terms: through their children, their work, the memories of others, their possessions, and even their bodies. Such earthly immortalities raise a host of fascinating questions about our attitudes toward life, and toward the world we leave behind us when we die. To what extent does the meaning we find in our lives depend upon the assumption there will always be a new generation to continue the human adventure? What would it be like if science were able to extend life indefinitely, and is this something already enshrined in the doctrine of reincarnation? Can we solve our anxieties about mortality by learning that life is worth living precisely because we do not live forever? In a generous and eloquent account, these and more are the questions Earthly Immortalities seeks to answer.

Book excerpt: A profound exploration of how to hold on to hope when our unchanging faith collides with a changing culture, from two respected Christian storytellers and thought leaders. “Offers neither spin control nor image maintenance for the evangelical tribe, but genuine hope.”—Russell Moore, president of ERLC As the pressures of health warnings, economic turmoil, and partisan politics continue to rise, the influence of gospel-focused Christians seems to be waning. In the public square and popular opinion, we are losing our voice right when it’s needed most for Christ’s glory and the common good. But there’s another story unfolding too—if you know where to look. In Gospelbound, Collin Hansen and Sarah Eekhoff Zylstra counter these growing fears with a robust message of resolute hope for anyone hungry for good news. Join them in exploring profound stories of Christians who are quietly changing the world in the name of Jesus—from the wild world of digital media to the stories of ancient saints and unsung contemporary activists on the frontiers of justice and mercy. Discover how, in these dark times, the light of Jesus shines even brighter. You haven’t heard the whole story. And that’s good news.

Book excerpt: For years Christians have been asking, "If you died tonight, do you know where you would go?" It turns out that many believers have been giving the wrong answer. It is not heaven. Award-winning author N. T. Wright outlines the present confusion about a Christian's future hope and shows how it is deeply intertwined with how we live today. Wright, who is one of today's premier Bible scholars, asserts that Christianity's most distinctive idea is bodily resurrection. He provides a magisterial defense for a literal resurrection of Jesus and shows how this became the cornerstone for the Christian community's hope in the bodily resurrection of all people at the end of the age. Wright then explores our expectation of "new heavens and a new earth," revealing what happens to the dead until then and what will happen with the "second coming" of Jesus. For many, including many Christians, all this will come as a great surprise. Wright convincingly argues that what we believe about life after death directly affects what we believe about life before death. For if God intends to renew the whole creation—and if this has already begun in Jesus's resurrection—the church cannot stop at "saving souls" but must anticipate the eventual renewal by working for God's kingdom in the wider world, bringing healing and hope in the present life. Lively and accessible, this book will surprise and excite all who are interested in the meaning of life, not only after death but before it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SONday SONrise is from an international priest at the USA who has been a priest for forty years and is a preacher of Gods Word day in and day out, especially on Sundays, to see that every one of his flock drinks truly the living water that flows out of Gods throne whenever they participate in Jesuss banquet and his discourse in their churches. Every homily found in this book is based on the firm belief that Sunday service is the central part of our Sabbath observance as the community of God in Jesus. As Pope John Paul II said, On this day we celebrate the identity of the parish community encountering the Risen Lord in the table of the Word and the table of His Body. This book of homilies is published mainly for the people who consider Sunday/holy day obligations as the Lords command. It will be of great help to them while going through the Sunday/holy day scriptures before they go to their services, so that they can be attuned to the Spirits move during the liturgy of the Word. It will enrich their understanding of what that days preaching as their pastors break the Word of God. It will also be of great help to their Lords day family gathering at home to converse together little more about the Word of God with spouses and kids. These homilies are only my personal reflections on the scriptural readings. I have prayerfully labored over them while writing. For sure, I have written them with love, uttered them in faith, but was always led by the Spirit of Jesus. Though this is chiefly for my favorable audience, others, especially my priest friends and preachers, can use it too and enrich their favorable congregation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The information that I have presented in these writings is possibly controversial to the belief of others. In my search for Bible truth I have derived from others many of the conclusions found within these Biblical subjects. With each subject I have insisted on positive proof by finding supporting scriptures that prove their meaning. By doing extensive search of the scriptures I believe the things written here are closer to Bible truth than what others have found. I was prompted to get a better understanding of the scriptures by the fact that there are so many different beliefs being taught in the Christian churches. I have tried to keep an open mind about those things that I have heard from the many ministers of the churches that I have attended. I have always been with the idea that if one just accepts what you are being told in these churches, there is a danger, because you are putting your salvation in anothers hands. I have come to believe there are many false ideas being taught by those ministers of the Christian belief. I believe those ministers are sincere with their teaching, but I also believe they in many ways have it wrong. I have considered the old saying if you are being led by a blind man, and he falls into the ditch, you also will fall into that ditch. I feel strongly that each one of us is responsible for our own salvation by hopefully getting it right. The things I have written are my opinion and one must decide upon reading if it agrees with your understanding. For many years I have done extensive study of the scriptures, and believe I have found a more truthful understanding of those scriptures. I believe in what I have found so strongly that I feel I must tell others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World-renowned Jesus scholar Marcus J. Borg shows how we can live passionately as Christians in today's world by practicing the vital elements of Christian faith. For the millions of people who have turned away from many traditional beliefs about God, Jesus, and the Bible, but still long for a relevant, nourishing faith, Borg shows why the Christian life can remain a transforming relationship with God. Emphasizing the critical role of daily practice in living the Christian life, he explores how prayer, worship, Sabbath, pilgrimage, and more can be experienced as authentically life-giving practices. Borg reclaims terms and ideas once thought to be the sole province of evangelicals and fundamentalists: he shows that terms such as "born again" have real meaning for all Christians; that the "Kingdom of God" is not a bulwark against secularism but is a means of transforming society into a world that values justice and love; and that the Christian life is essentially about opening one's heart to God and to others.

Book excerpt: What do you believe about souls? There are many very different doctrines taught in the world today concerning souls that are believed to be in all humans. By most a soul is believed to be something that is wholly apart from the person a soul is in; that a soul is something that is that is believed to be complete in its self without the person; it will live after the person it is in is dead; it is believed that a soul will exist forever without the person; it will never be dead; therefore, a soul cannot be resurrected from the dead. It is believed that a soul must live someplace forever, and it will live either in Heaven or Hell even if there is no resurrection. The doctrine of unconditional immortality of a deathless soul being in a person, and that soul leaving that person at the death of the person makes it impossible for Christ to have give His life to save that soul from death; if a soul had immortality it would already have life and could never not have life; all Christ could do is give it a reward or punish it.

Book excerpt: Adam who had enjoyed perfect life, its continuance conditioned on obedience to Jehovah (Gen. 2:17), now experienced in himself, the workings of sin and its fruitage, spiritual death. He was “cut off from God and true spirituality,” nevertheless his life vigor was strong, living for 930 years before physical death overtook him. He lost eternal life for himself and offspring. (Gen. 3:17, 22-23; 5:5) The apostle John, quotes Jesus Christ as saying: “God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son Jesus Christ, that whoever believes in him, will not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) And Jesus Christ said: “This is eternal life, their knowing you, the only true God and the one whom you have sent, Jesus Christ.” (John 17:3)

Book excerpt: This monumental work presents a careful, well-argued alternative reading of the Greek text of Mark-a reading that pays special attention to such literary devices as word order, chiasm, inclusio, asyndeton, and the historical present tense. Driving the commentary is Gundry's provocative, seldom-defended thesis that Mark's Gospel constitutes a straightforward apology for the shameful manner of Jesus' death; as such Mark is essentially an evangelistic tract rather than an obliquely written handbook of Christian discipleship and church life. "Sure to become recognized as the heavyweight English commentary on the Gospel of Mark.... This massive commentary, rich with exegetical detail and critical assessment of the secondary literature, makes an important contribution not only to Markan research but also to the study of the historical Jesus." - Christian Scholars Review

And if I invited door-knocking Witnesses into my home? This book introduces Jehovah's Witnesses without assuming prior knowledge of the Watch Tower organization. After outlining the Society's origins and history, the book explains their key beliefs and practices by taking the reader through the process of the seeker who makes initial contact with Witnesses, and progresses to take instruction and become a baptized member. The book then explores what is involved in being a Witness – congregational life, lifestyle, rites of passage, their understanding of the Bible and prophetic expectations. It examines the various processes and consequences of leaving the organization, controversies that have arisen in the course of its history, and popular criticisms. Discussion is given to the likelihood of reforms within the organization, such as its stance on blood transfusions, the role of women and new methods of meeting and evangelizing in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How would new, untrained Christians kindly and humbly introduce God to their non-Christian friends? What if neither the Christian nor the non-Christian could learn from printed materials such as pamphlets, books, or the Bible itself? What if the new Christian was usually alone and untrained in a community hostile to Christian beliefs? How could these new Christians continue the process of reproducing spiritual generations without first being fully taught themselves? The strategy offered here is to tell biblical stories that can be easily retold. Stories that revealed God's acts and perspectives leading to questions and discussion. Stories that caused new listeners to question their own beliefs. You're holding a collection of ninety stories designed to be retold by anyone--thirty Old Testament stories chronologically arranged from creation to the return from Israel's exile; thirty Gospel stories from the announcement of Jesus' birth to his ascension to heaven; and thirty stories from the New Testament from Pentecost to Jesus' return from heaven to earth. Each lesson is built upon the principles from Roche's first book, Biblical Storytelling Design: Understanding Why Oral Stories Work, but modeled and explained in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Help My Unbelief! is for a small but growing number of Christians who are asking critical questions about their faith, their church’s history, and the Bible. Around the 60s CE doubts arose as tensions within Judaism escalated, questions about Jesus and his delayed return were voiced, and Roman persecutions intensified. Jesus was one of a number of itinerant preachers, miracle-workers, and insurrectionaries. What set him apart from others? Using the Gospel of Mark the author demonstrates that doubts existed within the early Christian community. Doubting Christians can take comfort that Mark addressed these issues then and thus provides a guide for living in today’s ever-questioning world of faith.
