Book Synopsis International Science in the National Interest at the U.S. Geological Survey by : National Research Council
Download or read book International Science in the National Interest at the U.S. Geological Survey written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-08-18 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is intrinsically global, and from early in its history, the USGS has successfully carried out international projects that serve U.S. national interests and benefit the USGS domestic mission. Opportunities abound for the USGS to strategically pursue international science in the next 5-10 years that bears on growing worldwide problems having direct impact on the United States-climate and ecosystem changes, natural disasters, the spread of invasive species, and diminishing natural resources, to name a few. Taking a more coherent, proactive agency approach to international science-and building support for international projects currently in progress-would help the USGS participate in international science activities more effectively.

Book Synopsis Monitoring the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty by : H.J. Patton
Download or read book Monitoring the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty written by H.J. Patton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-09-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regional seismograms are dominated by the phases Pn, Pg, Sn, and Lg. More often Sn and Lg are used to infer the attenuation structure of the lithosphere. The seismic phase Sn is a high-frequency shear-wave (typically from 1 to 4 Hz and occasionally higher) that travels in the lithospheric mantle above the negative velocity gradient which usually marks the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary. Sn has been reported out to distances of 35° (e. g. , MOLNAR and OLIVER, 1969; HUESTIS et aI. , 1973). Sn arrives as a high-frequency wave train lasting tens of seconds and up to 1 to 2 minutes. Sn velocities are typically 4. 7 km/s in stable continental and oceanic lithosphere (HUESTIS et al. , 1973) and as low as 4. 3 km/s (KADINSKY-CADE et al. , 1981) in more tectonically active regions. Lg is a complex short period guided wave consisting of high-frequency P and S energy which travels primarily in the earth's crust at frequencies typically between 0. 5 and 5 Hz. It has been modeled as higher-mode Love and Rayleigh waves as well as a sequence of multiply reflected post-critical S waves trapped in a crustal guide (BOUCHON, 1982; KENNETT, 1986; BOSTOCK and KENNETT, 1990). Lg has been observed not to propagate in oceanic or very thin continental crust (PRESS and EWING, 1952; SEARLE, 1975; ZHANG and LAY, 1995).
Book Synopsis Space - Archaeology’s Final Frontier? An Intercontinental Approach by : Dustin Keeler
Download or read book Space - Archaeology’s Final Frontier? An Intercontinental Approach written by Dustin Keeler and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the cultural, social and archaeological aspects of space and the impact of spatial concepts in practical archaeological case studies. It summarizes recent developments and looks to the future, exploring some of the cutting-edge ideas in spatial method and theory. The past decade has seen significant advances in the tools available for spatial analysis in archaeology, and theory and method regarding the spatial character of archaeology must keep pace with these advances. Geomorphological and geochemical techniques, geographic information systems, remotely sensed data, virtual reality and electronic survey technology provide new opportunities, but also require new ideas. This book gives us insight into the ways that people have used space to subsist, to recreate their culture in their ‘homelands’ or in new areas, or impose their culture on others. Contributors address the way archaeological notions of space and deep time can add to society’s understanding of landscape, social relationships, past environment and cultural heritage. The contributions from Europe and North America demonstrate intercontinental connections and explore ways of using dynamic models of spatial patterning to assess human activity within natural and cultural landscapes.
