Book excerpt: This unique combination of local, cultural and family history explores the lives of the men and women who worked in the baking trade in the regional Queensland town of Warwick during the century after the town's establishment in 1861. What emerges is a microcosm of Australia as it was until the rapid technological changes and societal shifts that began in the 1960s. Printed in colour and enriched by anecdotes and scores of photographs, advertisements, and newspaper clippings, the book is both a record and an affectionate reflection on an era characterised by hard work, enterprise, resilience and optimism, and provides a rare glimpse into traditional bakeries where magicians in aprons and baker's caps turned flour, yeast, salt and water into the wonder of bread. Beginning with background about Australia's and Queensland's early bakeries and flour mills, it tells the stories of some of Warwick's remarkable baking pioneers. It also traces the history of Warwick's flour mills and the successive owners of the large bakehouses known to have existed. Woven into these stories are broader events that affected all of Australia (immigration, two world wars, and the Great Depression) and the theme of hope of building a bright and prosperous future through hard work and enterprise. The book includes a list of some 160 owners, bakers, pastrycooks and carters identified as having worked in the trade in Warwick over the century concerned, as well as sections dealing with bread distribution, the bread-making process, ovens and other essential equipment, the role of various baking associations, and the importance of institutions such as the Bread Research Institute in contributing the science that turned baking into the bread manufacturing industry. Useful sources of further information about Warwick's history are also included and some concluding reflections.

Book excerpt: By approaching workplace performance from the perspective of the theatre, my previous books2 have attempted to illustrate the connection between work and the world of drama and dramatic texts. Here now the emphasis is on performance at work, borrowing in many instances, as we shall see, from the theatre for the sake of satisfying an audience comprised of our stakeholders. That we are all performing at any moment is a noted idea. With the increasing presence of surveillance cameras in many towns and cities today, we are indeed almost continually in the spotlight. That said, personal performance in this book relates to our intentional actions as opposed to activities merely performed as habits or reactions to stimuli deriving from external sources. Focusing on performance, potential and the workplace, certain ideas were originally produced as material for my personal blog3 over the period June 2013-June 2014. Excerpted from the Introduction

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life of Phonse Tobin was anything but ordinary. Born in 1905, he followed on behind soldiers as they marched to the wharves to depart for WW1. He earned pocket money by trapping rats and collecting the South Melbourne Council's rat bounty, and almost 'haunted' the Collins Street movie and live theatres. After leaving school in 1919 he worked as a storeman, salesman, soldier and fireman. In 1934 Phonse and his brothers Leo, Tom and Kevin started what has become Australia's most successful family-owned funeral service company. A natural entertainer, Phonse possessed a fine singing voice and produced many amateur theatrical productions in the 1930s. He was a good all-round sportsman and a successful professional footrunner. He was a long-serving member of the North Melbourne Football Club committee and was the club’s president from 1955 to 1957. He was a life member of both the NMFC and the VFL (now AFL). Phonse married Vera Crough in 1935. They had four children and their direct descendants number 38. Phonse was one of those rare characters who could meet, communicate and be at ease with people of all classes and walks of life - from prize fighters to prime ministers, from 'mug' punters to wealthy publicans or bookmakers, from Knights of the Southern Cross to knights of the realm, from everyday parish priests to 'princes' of the church, and from grave diggers to governors. Like everyone else, he had his failings. But these failings – such as they were – were more than offset by his strength of character, generous spirit, creative flair, kindness to people in need, and his love for and undying support of his family.

Book excerpt: "Dark days are these. "I am mourning the loss of my friend. I am a broken man, incomplete. "I left my home on a quest to destroy the bag or hide it forever but my heart died the day my friend did and I now lack motivation, purpose and hope. "Every day is a struggle to exist. Every day is a fight. "The witches are coming for me. Three remain. Two travel from their mysterious Kingdom of Kakkakin and the third has spent an eternity alone. Epochs of isolation have driven him mad and he successfully anticipates our every move. He plots and schemes. He waits for us. "I must stay ahead of the witches but the little I understand of the wide world is in flux. Rights to the crown are being contested and life’s proving to be dangerous both at home and abroad. There is another golem, madder and more dangerous than the tracker and the turned continue to seek us out. Some come to kill us whilst others to join our disparate group of survivors. "Men, turned, witches and my ever expanding assemblage struggle to find a place in these rapidly changing lands and only time will tell if we can survive all the trouble that’s heading our way. "And I still have that damn bag and I swear it’s started to look at me."

Book excerpt: The Tartine Way — Not all bread is created equal The Bread Book "...the most beautiful bread book yet published..." -- The New York Times, December 7, 2010 Tartine — A bread bible for the home or professional bread-maker, this is the book! It comes from Chad Robertson, a man many consider to be the best bread baker in the United States, and co-owner of San Francisco’s Tartine Bakery. At 5 P.M., Chad Robertson’s rugged, magnificent Tartine loaves are drawn from the oven. The bread at San Francisco's legendary Tartine Bakery sells out within an hour almost every day. Only a handful of bakers have learned the techniques Chad Robertson has developed: To Chad Robertson, bread is the foundation of a meal, the center of daily life, and each loaf tells the story of the baker who shaped it. Chad Robertson developed his unique bread over two decades of apprenticeship with the finest artisan bakers in France and the United States, as well as experimentation in his own ovens. Readers will be astonished at how elemental it is. Bread making the Tartine Way: Now it's your turn to make this bread with your own hands. Clear instructions and hundreds of step-by-step photos put you by Chad's side as he shows you how to make exceptional and elemental bread using just flour, water, and salt. Book excerpt: AUTHOR OF SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER, LIFE TO THE LIMIT In his 17 years as a Formula 1 driver, Jenson Button has picked up a thing or two about how to do the job properly. Sure, you need to be able to drive a car fast - and Jenson is on hand to pass on a few tricks of the trade here - but you also need to know the real rules for making it to the top. Like, how to tell a multiple F1 champion they need to check their blind-spot. What the difference is between a helmet and a hat, and indeed a 'helmet-hat'. How to practise your champagne spray ahead of the big day. Why it is never, ever, under any circumstances a good idea to buy a yacht. And how to face down your team when you've just stacked their multi-million-pound car into a wall during practice. But 'JB' (nicknames in F1 run the full range from initials to, well, just using first names) doesn't stop there. HTBAF1D (catchy) lifts the lid on the people, the places, the weird rituals, the motorhomes, the media, the cars, the perks and the disasters. Join Jenson as he reveals how not to race a stupid big truck, why driving Le Mans is like having five shots of tequila before lunch, and what to do when you finally hang up your helmet-hat.
