Book Synopsis Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights by : Jibesh Bhattacharyya
Download or read book Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights written by Jibesh Bhattacharyya and published by Atlantic Publishers & Dist. This book was released on 2006 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emily Brontë Appeared First In The Literary World As A Poet, But She Is Remembered Even Today For The Single Powerful Novel, Wuthering Heights, That She Composed Towards The End Of Her Life. The Novel Is A Singular One And It Stands Outside The Main Current Of Nineteenth Century Fiction. Because Of Its Peculiar Nature It Has Given Rise To Much Controversy. Some Consider It A Gothic Novel While Others Think Of It As A Novel Of Revenge. Some Others Find In It A Romantic Tale Of Languishing Love. The Dramatic Way Of Narration By Quoting The Exact Words Spoken By The Different Characters, By Mainly Two Narrators, Nelly Dean And Lockwood, Gives The Novel A Peculiar Interest. Besides, The Portrayal Of The Character Of Heathcliff, The Protagonist, Betrays A Powerful Imagination Of The Novelist. Like Coleridge, Emily Brontë Has Been Successful In Giving The Esoteric World She Has Created, A Touch Of Reality And Credibility By Making The Supernatural A Part Of The Natural. The Novel Is A Story Of Two Houses, At Wuthering Heights And Thrushcross Grange With A Vast Moorland Separating Them. Heathcliff Comes As A Disturber Of Peace In These Two Houses And The Peace Is Restored Only With His Death. It Is Not Simply A Tragic Tale Although There Are Several Deaths In It. The Novel Shows That There Are Both Good And Evil In This World And That Evil Is Ultimately Won Over By Love. Wuthering Heights Remains A Powerful Creation Of Emily Brontë S Imagination, And Because Of Her Originality And Poetic Intensity It Is Held That She Might Have Been Shakespeare S Younger Sister (Westminster Review, 1898).

Book Synopsis A Companion to the Victorian Novel by : William Baker
Download or read book A Companion to the Victorian Novel written by William Baker and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-01-30 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Victorian novels remain enormously popular today: some continue to be made into films, while authors such as Charles Dickens and George Eliot are firmly established in the canon and taught at all levels. These works have also attracted a great deal of critical attention, with much current scholarship examining the novel in relation to its historical, political, and cultural contexts. This reference book is an introductory guide to the Victorian novel, its background, and its legacy. Each chapter is written by an expert contributor and offers a fresh account of past, current, and new directions in scholarship. The volume is divided into several broad sections, with chapters in each section treating more specialized topics. The first section looks at the emergence of the Victorian novel and its literary precursors, with particular emphasis on the growth of serialization and the development of the novel of syndication. The second explores significant social and cultural facets of nineteenth-century British literature, while the third discusses the principal features of different genres, such as ghost stories, the Gothic, detective fiction, the social problem novel, and contemporary film adaptations. Individual authors are examined in the fourth section, while the fifth overviews various critical approaches and their application to nineteenth-century fiction.
Book Synopsis Hidden Rivalries in Victorian Fiction by : Jerome Meckier
Download or read book Hidden Rivalries in Victorian Fiction written by Jerome Meckier and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Victorian fiction has been read and analyzed from a wide range of perspectives in the past century. But how did the novelists themselves read and respond to each other's creations when they first appeared? Jerome Meckier answers that intriguing question in this ground-breaking study of what he terms the Victorian realism wars. Meckier argues that nineteenth-century British fiction should be seen as a network of intersecting reactions and counteractions in which the novelists rethought and rewrote each other's novels as a way of enhancing their own credibility. In an increasingly relative world, thanks to the triumph of a scientific secularity, the goal of the novelist was to establish his or her own credentials as a realist, hence a reliable social critic, by undercutting someone else's—usually Charles Dickens's. Trollope, Mrs. Gaskell, and especially George Eliot attempted to make room for themselves in the 1850s and 1860s by pushing Dickens aside. Wilkie Collins tried a different form of parodic revaluation: he strove to outdo Dickens at the kind of novel Dickens thought he did best, the kind his other rivals tried to cancel, tone down, or repair, ostensibly for being too melodramatic but actually for expressing too negative a world view. For his part, Dickens—determined to remain inimitable—replied to all of his rivals by redoing them as spiritedly as they had reused his characters and situations to make their own statements and to discredit his. Thus Meckier redefines Victorian realism as the bravura assertion by a major novelist (or one soon to be) that he or she was a better realist than Dickens. By suggesting the ways Victorian novelist read and rewrote each other's work, this innovative study alters present day perceptions of such double-purpose novels as Felix Holt, Bleak House, Middlemarch, North and South, Hard Times, The Woman in White, and The Mystery of Edwin Drood.
