Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Stages of the Quaker Movement in Lancashire How largely the movement captured Cumberland and Westmorland is common knowledge; but it has been somewhat of a revelation to myself to find that it was so widespread in Lancashire and it is to make this clear that the following pages have been written. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In First Among Friends, the first scholarly biography of George Fox (1624-91), H. Larry Ingle examines the fascinating life of the reformation leader and founding organizer of the Religious Society of Friends, more popularly known today as the Quakers. Ingle places Fox within the upheavals of the English Civil Wars, Revolution, and Restoration, showing him and his band of "rude" disciples challenging the status quo, particularly during the Cromwellian Interregnum. Unlike leaders of similar groups, Fox responded to the conservatism of the Stuart restoration by facing down challenges from internal dissidents, and leading his followers to persevere until the 1689 Act of Toleration. It was this same sense of perseverance that helped the Quakers survive--the only religious sect of the era still existing today. Firmly grounded in primary sources and enriched with gripping detail, this well-written and original study reveals hitherto unknown sides of one who was clearly "First Among Friends."

Book excerpt: Does God really communicate his will to individuals, so that they receive infallible guidance in that sense which the ancient Greeks called "enthusiasm"? Both the Old Testament and the New maintain that the true prophets received direct advices from God, which, regardless of consequences, they were morally bound to communicate even to the skeptical among their contemporaries. The recent canonization of Joan of Arc is a fresh proof that the Catholics believe in the possibility of private revelations. Luther, Calvin and the English Reformers were hostile to those Anabaptists and others who alleged they were actually receiving new revelations; and early Massachusetts felt that the most dangerous of Anne Hutchinson's heresies was her claim to immediate inspiration; for the "motions" she followed might not be those of God but the Devil. Dr. Lee sketches the belief in direct inspiration from its Hebraic and Greek roots down to the time of the French Prophets who amazed London. Early Methodism arose in such an atmosphere. He has, therefore, examined the early records of the Methodist movement and gathered evidence from its friends and from its enemies to answer the question: How far did some of the early Methodists believe that they were directly moved by God?

Book excerpt: This book explores the trans-Atlantic history of Protestant traditions of communalism – communities of shared property. The sixteenth-century Reformation may have destroyed monasticism in northern Europe, but Protestant Christianity has not always denied common property. Between 1650 and 1850, a range of Protestant groups adopted communal goods, frequently after crossing the Atlantic to North America: the Ephrata community, the Shakers, the Harmony Society, the Community of True Inspiration, and others. Early Mormonism also developed with a communal dimension, challenging its surrounding Protestant culture of individualism and the free market. In a series of focussed and survey studies, this book recovers the trans-Atlantic networks and narratives, ideas and influences, which shaped Protestant communalism across two centuries of early modernity.

Book excerpt: This book provides the most comprehensive theological analysis to date of the work of early Quaker leaders. Spanning the first seventy years of the Quaker movement to the beginning of its formalization, Early Quakers and their Theological Thought examines in depth the lives and writings of sixteen prominent figures. These include not only recognized authors such as George Fox, William Penn, Margaret Fell and Robert Barclay, but also lesser-known ones who nevertheless played equally important roles in the development of Quakerism. Each chapter draws out the key theological emphases of its subject, offering fresh insights into what the early Quakers were really saying and illustrating the variety and constancy of the Quaker message in the seventeenth century. This cutting-edge volume incorporates a wealth of primary sources to fill a significant gap in the existing literature, and it will benefit both students and scholars in Quaker studies.
