Book excerpt: Early Schools of Calvert County Maryland details the establishment and development of the schools in Calvert County from Colonial times until approximately 1970. These schools progressed from one-room log or frame buildings serving small communities to multi-room brick and block structures covering large geographic areas. A short history of each individual school that could be identified is provided and includes the dates that the school was actually in use. Teacher and student recollections give both historical information and sometimes amusing personal perspectives. These histories are enhanced with locations taken from historic Calvert County, Maryland, maps and shown on current topographic maps. Many period school photos are also included.Detailed information is included on the efforts of the Freedmen's Bureau, Rosenwald Fund, and Jeanes Fund in aiding Calvert's African American schools. The book shows how low attendance was possibly the biggest obstacle to education in rural Calvert County, Maryland, followed by the late establishment of high schools. This book provides a comprehensive survey of the early schools of Calvert County, Maryland.

Book excerpt: Nestled between the Chesapeake Bay and the Patuxent River, this tiny peninsula county is home to one of the oldest African American communities, established when the first settlers arrived. Located just south of Washington, D.C., Calvert County's African American community can be traced back to the county's beginning in the 17th century. From a time when Calvert County's black population grew to approximately 60 percent of the populace, to its present-day residents representing the national average of 12 percent, Calvert's African Americans have attempted to hold on to many of their rich cultural traditions. Although their livelihoods as farmers and watermen have mostly ceased to exist these days, they continue to maintain strong ties to the land and an unwavering commitment to family values and community. The beautiful photographs and documents in this volume give a glimpse into the past of these proud people who continue to flourish while holding onto their distinctive identity.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cecilius Calvert: Second Baron of Baltimore and First Propreitary of Maryland The teachers of every county should maintain an organization, and this can best be done through the plan of the County Teachers Association. Here teachers meet for interchange of views, to get better acquainted, to learn conditions in various sections of the county, to give the county superintendent an opportunity of coming in contact with his coworkers, and to give to the teachers themselves a chance to discuss ways and means for their own betterment professionally and financially. Whatever recognition the General Assembly has given our teachers in the matter of increased salaries has been brought about, to a very large extent, by teachers organizations. In our school system, the county is the unit, and the county association is naturally the unit in teaching organizations. If your county does not already have one, begin at once to organize. Let one-half of the meeting days be on Saturdays, and the other on school days. A New State Normal School Building is now the most urgent need of our school system. Present facilities are inadequate, and our fair State is lagging far in the rear in normal school facilities, when compared with other states. We want new buildings, located outside of Baltimore city, for our Maryland State Normal School. We want comfortable dormitory buildings, where our students may live and get proper supervision. We want the State to increase its appropriation, so that it will be possible for those who are going to give back to the State, their services as teachers, to get their education at a nominal cost, which will be within the reach of any or all who have the desire and aptitude to become teachers. The teachers, through their county associations, can help mould sentiment, and thereby make it possible to have the next Legislature make the necessary appropriations for new buildings and maintenance. The graduates of the Maryland State Normal School should take the lead in this movement. The Rural Schools still outnumber all others. It will be many decades, perhaps, before the one-teacher school becomes a memory. The large consolidated rural school is an excellent thing for contemplation, but with a few exceptions our large schools are to be town schools for many years to come. We want to improve the character of the rural school, both in th-e matter of buildings and grounds, and the instruction which is given within its walls. The school boards ought to spend more money in the construction of the school house in the first place. There is no economy, but rather waste, of public funds, to limit the cost of a school house to four or five hundred dollars, and get something unattractive in appearance, too small for forty pupils, unsanitary in its arrangement, and poorly adapted to its intended uses; where two or three times that amount will provide an adequate and attractive building, which will be an ornament to the community, and a proper abode for children for six hours of the day. Book excerpt: This history began as a small pedigree assembled as a birthday gift for my late father-in-law, Colonel Henry Perkins Gantt (1894-1983) of Holly Rod, Gloucester Point, Virginia, on his 72nd birthday, 29 April 1966. With continued research over the past 47 years, it has grown to encompass the history of nearly the complete descendants of Thomas Gantt (ca. 1634-1692), transported to Maryland in 1654, and his second wife, Ann Fielder (ca. 1662-1726), through at least the first six generations, and, in many lines, extending down through the eighth and succeeding ones as well. In a project of this enormous size and scope, there are bound to be errors and omissions that the author leaves to future historians of the family to correct, as well as to extend and continue the narrative. Where critical, probative information is sourced to original archives, but the sheer volume of data makes this by necessity incomplete.
