Book excerpt: Historian Perry Miller said that to the Puritans, "History is a memorial of the mercies of God, so that posterity may know them, remember them, and hymn His praises." Eighteenth-century historian Joseph Milner desired that his church history be a "celebration of piety." Today, however, works of church history often fail to inspire or to edify believers. One of the goals of this book is to remedy this failure of modern church histories. The series of sketches gathered here enlightens Christians about their heritage and uplifts them by the godly examples of previous generations. The great men of church history are represented here: Augustine, Wycliffe, Luther, Calvin, Knox, Bach, Wesley, Whitefield, Spurgeon, and others. Also found here are the great themes of church history: the persecution of believers, the role of women, the history of religious art, and numerous other topics. The authors write on a level accessible to the layman, but they neither trivialize their subjects nor indulge in slipshod research. "History is a memorial of the mercies of God" -- that sentiment is echoed by the authors of this volume. Throughout the book runs the theme of God's sovereignty in history and His goodness to man. Across the pages of history, Christians may write, as J.S. Bach did on all his music, Soli Deo gloria! "To God alone the glory!" --

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early Scenes in Church History, is the eighth in a series of seventeen books called The Faith-Promoting Series. Published between 1879 and 1915, this series of books was published by the Juvenile Instructor's Office for "the Instruction and Encouragement of Young Latter-day Saints." It was George Q. Cannon's inspiration that produced the series, however. In 1866, Cannon, then a member of the Quorum of the Twelve, began publication of a magazine for youth and young adults called The Juvenile Instructor, which he owned and published until his death in 1901, when his family sold the magazine to the LDS Church's Sunday School organization. Thus, in 1882 when the present work, Early Scenes in Church History, was published, it was a work undertaken under the direction of Cannon, with the blessing of the Church's governing leadership. In the preface, the publisher provides that the purpose of the work is to preserve stories of faith from early Church history before they are lost, primarily for the benefit of the next generation of Latter-day Saints. The underlying premise for the work is that the rising generation of Latter-day Saints understand the legacy of faith bequeathed to them and thereby be inspired to acquire their own faith to carry on in the work of the Lord initiated by their spiritual, if not literal, forbearers. Put another way, the premise for the work was to "remember" what God has done for this people, both collectively and individually. Portions of The Faith Promoting Series, including the present work, amount to almost an oral history project of people from Joseph Smith's generation. The simple narratives presented amount to the raw material of history, and preservation of these narratives saved from oblivion many personal and profound experiences of conversion and service. Prophetically writing in one preface, Cannon observed that "men will seek with avidity" for such firsthand information "but a few years hence."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating and lively book provides the first comprehensive discussion of the production, circulation, and use of books in early Christianity. It explores the extent of literacy in early Christian communities; the relation in the early church between oral tradition and written materials; the physical form of early Christian books; how books were produced, transcribed, published, duplicated, and disseminated; how Christian libraries were formed; who read the books, in what circumstances, and to what purposes. Harry Y. Gamble interweaves practical and technological dimensions of the production and use of early Christian books with the social and institutional history of the period. Drawing on evidence from papyrology, codicology, textual criticism, and early church history, as well as on knowledge about the bibliographical practices that characterized Jewish and Greco-Roman culture, he offers a new perspective on the role of books in the first five centuries of the early church.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Scenes in Church History: Eight Book of the Faith-Promoting Series Many deaths have occurred within the last few years among the veteran members of our Church. Numbers of persons have recently passed away who were connected with the Church during the early years of its existence, and whose lives were filled with scenes and incidents of the most inter esting nature. Their wonderful experience so far as known is appreciated by their intimate friends, in whose memories it is embalmed, but it will hereafter only be known as tradition. For, as a rule, they have left no written testimony or record of their lives to show to future generations what they have seen or passed through. We have scarcely ever heard of the death of such a person without a feeling of regret that the impor tant scenes of which he was a witness while living were not better known, and that a definite and accurate account of them had not been written before his death. A short time since we conceived the idea of publishing a volume of the faith-promoting Series, entitled early scenes IN church history, to be made up of such inci dents of appropriate nature as we could obtain from early members of the Church. Book excerpt: This book, the eighth in the Faith-Promoting Series, is a collection of very precious stories from early Church history. Unlike other books written about the Saints in the early days of this dispensation, this book is compiled from the oral histories of the early Saints who lived the experiences. Just as Alma the Younger in the Book of Mormon asked an important question to the people of Nephi that applies to us as Latter-Day Saints as well. In Alma 5:6 he says, "And now behold, I say unto you, my brethren, you that belong to this church, have you sufficiently retained in remembrance the captivity of your fathers? Yea, and have you sufficiently retained in remembrance his mercy and long-suffering towards them? And moreover, have ye sufficiently retained in remembrance that he has delivered their souls from hell?" As Latter-Day Saints, remembering the sufferings of the pioneers and early Saints, the mercies and long-suffering shown to them by our Heavenly Father, and learning of their deliverance by His hand will strengthen our faith and bring us closer to Him. I hope that all who read these miraculous accounts will gain strength from them, and see an increase in their faith. May we always "retain in remembrance" these stories.
