Book excerpt: The Topsy-Turvies are just a nice ordinary family. They sleep in the kitchen, get up at midnight and have breakfast in the bedroom, wear their coats indoors and their pyjamas when they go out, and are most surprised when they visit Mrs Plum next door and find she doesn't. They decide to make her house lovely for her by turning everything upside down - and when a burglar climbs through the window, they do their best to make him feel at home. First published in 1995, this story is as witty and original as one would expect from the author of Horrid Henry. It is now reissued with brand-new illustrations by Emily Bolam, whose bright and brilliant pictures of the Topsy-Turvies are as much fun as the text.

Book Synopsis Topsy Turvy History of New Orleans and Ten Tiny Turtles by : Simone Rathlé
Download or read book Topsy Turvy History of New Orleans and Ten Tiny Turtles written by Simone Rathlé and published by . This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten tiny turtles take you on a historical journey through New Orleans to celebrate the tri-centennial in 2018. From when the French explorers first disembarked from their tall ships, waded ashore, and established the city of New Orleans, to the city¿s topsy-turvy history of pirates and parades, battles and brass bands, colorful cuisine, a chess champ, and some very heavy weather, the turtle family of Brennan¿s restaurant has borne quiet witness from its stately courtyard. In the tradition of New Orleans¿ rich culinary history, the first five of the ten tiny turtles, the ¿Muthas,¿ have been named after the five mother sauces of classical French cuisine, which are so essential to the city¿s fare: Béchamel, Espagnole, Hollandaise, Tomate, and Velouté. The ¿Othas,¿ bear the names of five other sauces that complement signature New Orleans dishes: Bordelaise, Cocktail, Mignonette, Remoulade, and Ravigote. Here, for the first time, the present generation of ten tiny turtles ¿ nine girls and one boy ¿ reveals the vibrant evolution of the beloved city, New Orleans, and in particular, the story of one of its most iconic restaurants, Brennan¿s, in the historic French Quarter.
Download or read book Topsy-Turvy written by Charles Bernstein and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2021-04-30 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his most expansive and unruly collection to date, the acclaimed poet Charles Bernstein gathers poems, both tiny and grand, that speak to a world turned upside down. Our time of “covidity,” as Bernstein calls it in one of the book’s most poignantly disarming works, is characterized in equal measure by the turbulence of both the body politic and the individual. Likewise, in Topsy-Turvy, novel and traditional forms jostle against one another: horoscopes, shanties, and elegies rub up against gags, pastorals, and feints; translations, songs, screenplays, and slapstick tangle deftly with commentaries, conundrums, psalms, and prayers. Though Bernstein’s poems play with form, they incorporate a melancholy, even tragic, sensibility. This “cognitive dissidence,” as Bernstein calls it, is reflected in a lyrically explosive mix of pathos, comedy, and wit, though the reader is kept guessing which is which at almost every turn. Topsy-Turvy includes an ode to the New York City subway and a memorial for Harpers Ferry hero Shields Green, along with collaborations with artists Amy Sillman and Richard Tuttle. This collection is also full of other voices: Pessoa, Geeshie Wiley, Friedrich Rückert, and Rimbaud; Carlos Drummond, Virgil, and Brian Ferneyhough; and even Caudio Amberian, an imaginary first-century aphorist. Bernstein didn’t set out to write a book about the pandemic, but these poems, performances, and translations are oddly prescient, marking a path through dark times with a politically engaged form of aesthetic resistance: We must “Continue / on, as / before, as / after.” The audio version of Topsy-Turvy is performed by the author.

Book Synopsis Topsy-turvy World by : Kirsty Murray
Download or read book Topsy-turvy World written by Kirsty Murray and published by National Library Australia. This book was released on 2012 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the first Europeans who came to Australia, everything seemed topsy turvy. Christmas was in the summer and trees shed their bark but not their leaves. And the animals were bizarre. There was a bird that laughed like a donkey and a type of greyhound that bound along on its hind legs like a hare. There was an animal in Tasmania whose nocturnal screeches sounded like the devil and a river creature that had a duck's bill at one end and a beaver's tail at the other. The Europeans had never seen anything like these animals before and gave them names similar to those of the European creatures they already knew. They drew and painted odd pictures of them, showing they did not understand the animals' habits. In one illustration, a wombat is standing on its back legs and in another a Tasmanian tiger is wrestling with a platypus of the same size.

Book Synopsis The Stars Beckoned by : Candy Wellins
Download or read book The Stars Beckoned written by Candy Wellins and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-04-20 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lyrical picture book biography of Edward White, the first American to walk in space--and an ode to the beauty and wonder of the stars that brought him there. Edward White loved the night, lived where stars were big and bright. The evening sky-- so wide, so high. Made him wonder. Made him sigh. Edward White was the first American astronaut to walk in space. But before his spacewalk, he was just a boy who loved the stars. As he grew up, he would look up at the night sky in wonder--he knew that, one day, he would visit the stars themselves. In this touching and poignant picture book biography, we see how Edward's passion for the stars shaped the course of his life, and how he came to realize, even in the depths of space, what was ultimately most important to him--his family. With backmatter containing photos and more information on Edward's life, Candy Wellins and Courtney Dawson deliver a book that is as much a feast for readers' eyes as the stars were for Edward's. Praise for The Stars Beckoned: "The right stuff for children with the stars in their eyes." --Kirkus Reviews "An introduction to a space pioneer that’s ideal for the youngest nonfiction readers." --Publishers Weekly
