Book Synopsis Evolutionary Paleoecology by : Warren D. Allmon
Download or read book Evolutionary Paleoecology written by Warren D. Allmon and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2001-02-14 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important questions we can ask about life is "Does ecology matter?" Most biologists and paleontologists are trained to answer "yes," but the exact mechanisms by which ecology matters in the context of patterns that play out over millions of years have never been entirely clear. This book examines these mechanisms and looks at how ancient environments affected evolution, focusing on long-term macroevolutionary changes as seen in the fossil record. Evolutionary paleoecology is not a new discipline. Beginning with Darwin, researchers have attempted to understand how the environment has affected evolutionary history. But as we learn more about these patterns, the search for a new synthetic view of the evolutionary process that integrates species evolution, ecology, and mass extinctions becomes ever more pressing. The present volume is a benchmark sampler of active research in this ever more active field.
Book Synopsis Mazon Creek Fossils by : Matthew H. Nitecki
Download or read book Mazon Creek Fossils written by Matthew H. Nitecki and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-02 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mazon Creek Fossils documents the proceedings of a Symposium on Mazon Creek Fossils held at the campus of the University of Michigan during the annual meeting of the North-Central section of the Geological Society of America, 1 May 1978. The present volume contains most of the papers presented at that meeting, and two contributions prepared for it but not delivered in Ann Arbor. The volume is divided into four parts. Part contains papers on sedimentation, fossil distribution, and the origin of the concretions. Part II on paleobotany includes studies on soft-sediment cementation enclosing Mazon plant fossils and diversity and stratigraphic Age of the Mazon Creek flora. The papers in Part III focus on invertebrate paleontology. It includes studies on soft-bodied coelenterates in the Pennsylvanian of Illinois and the centipedes (Chilopoda) of the Mazon Creek. Part IV on vertebrate paleontology includes papers on fishes of the Mazon Creek Fauna and Amphibamus grandiceps as a possible frog ancestor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book simulates a historical walk through nature, teaching readers about the biodiversity on Earth in various eras with a focus on past terrestrial environments. Geared towards a student audience, using simple terms and avoiding long complex explanations, the book discusses the plants and animals that lived on land, the evolution of natural systems, and how these biological systems changed over time in geological and paleontological contexts. With easy-to-understand and scientifically accurate and up-to-date information, readers will be guided through major biological events from the Earth's past. The topics in the book represent a broad paleoenvironmental spectrum of interests and educational modules, allowing for virtual visits to rich geological times. Eras and events that are discussed include, but are not limited to, the much varied Quaternary environments, the evolution of plants and animals during the Cenozoic, the rise of angiosperms, vertebrate evolution and ecosystems in the Mesozoic, the Permian mass extinction, the late Paleozoic glaciation, and the origin of the first trees and land plants in the Devonian-Ordovician. With state-of-the art expert scientific instruction on these topics and up-to-date and scientifically accurate illustrations, this book can serve as an international course for students, teachers, and other interested individuals.

Book excerpt: This book provides up-to-date coverage of fossil plants from Precambrian life to flowering plants, including fungi and algae. It begins with a discussion of geologic time, how organisms are preserved in the rock record, and how organisms are studied and interpreted and takes the student through all the relevant uses and interpretations of fossil plants. With new chapters on additional flowering plant families, paleoecology and the structure of ancient plant communities, fossil plants as proxy records for paleoclimate, new methodologies used in phylogenetic reconstruction and the addition of new fossil plant discoveries since 1993, this book provides the most comprehensive account of the geologic history and evolution of microbes, algae, fungi, and plants through time. - Major revision of a 1993 classic reference - Lavishly illustrated with 1,800 images and user friendly for use by paleobotanists, biologists, geologists and other related scientists - Includes an expanded glossary with an extensive up-to-date bibliography and a comprehensive index - Provides extensive coverage of fungi and other microbes, and major groups of land plants both living and extinct
