In Bakker's view, early Netherlandish as well as seventeenth-century Dutch painting can be understood only in the context of the intellectual climate of the day. Cuttler changed from artist to art historian at New York University's Institute of Fine Arts, studying under distinguished teachers such as Walter Friedlaender and Erwin Panofsky. He lectured on Bosch on three continents, and his retirement enabled him to devote time to further research. A result is Hieronymus Bosch: Late Work. This new book presents Cuttler's discoveries on three late triptychs, a major trio of Bosch's maturity: the Haywain, the Lisbon Temptation of St. Anthony, and the Garden of Earthly Delights. He presents Bosch's unique view of Christ and salvation in union with hagiography, the Devotio moderna, and medieval hermeneutics, a revelation of Bosch's immense erudition and overwhelming artistry. Bosch reinforced his concepts with supporting casts of animals, natural and demonic, birds, and other iconographic elements. Analysis of the Berlin painting of St. John the Evangelist's apocalyptic vision of the Virgin Mary, the Madrid Seven Deadly Sins tondo, and the Vienna drawing of the Tree-Man expands our understanding of these themes. Other influences affecting Bosch's art, such as whether he travelled or whether he used contemporary prints, whether he drew upon Dante's Inferno, or religious tracts, and the attitudes of his ambience are also examined. The final chapter presents the author's understanding of Bosch, his religiosity and his genius, in his time and place.

Analyzing paintings by Rogier van der Weyden, Quentin Massys, and others, Jolly investigates artists’ and audiences’ responses to increasing religious tensions, expanding art markets, and changing roles for women. Using cultural ideas concerning the gendered and pregnant body, Jolly reveals how dress confirms the Magdalene’s multivalent nature. In some paintings, her gown’s opening laces betray her wantonness yet simultaneously mark her as Christ’s spiritually pregnant Bride; elsewhere ’undress’ reconfirms her erotic nature while paradoxically marking her penitence; in still other works, exotic finery expresses her sanctity while celebrating Antwerp’s textile industry. Produced in 1486 and subsequently augmented, the Guild Book of the Barbers and Surgeons of York (British Library Egerton MS 2572) is a unique record of the knowledge, ambitions, activities and civic relationships maintained by the Barbers and Surgeons Guild over a period of 300 years. The manuscript's earliest folios contain images, astrological tracts, a plague treatise and a bloodletting poem. To these were added early modern ordinances and oaths, a series of royal portraits, and the names of the Guild's masters and apprentices. It is a rare survival of late medieval medical knowledge placed within a civic context. This new multi-disciplinary examination of the York Guild Book presents a comprehensive edition of its content and a detailed study of the creation and use of this fascinating manuscript. The York Guild Book was not owned by any one person but was intended to be representative of the types of manuscripts the Guild's members might have individually possessed. The Guild's commission elevated their manuscript's functional content into something which could be proudly owned and displayed, as is demonstrated by the stylishly executed pen and ink drawings, two of which are possibly unique. Through a contextualisation of the form and content of the manuscript, the book articulates ideas about material culture and the ceremonial role of secular manuscripts whilst shedding new light on the dissemination and status of medieval medical texts.
