Book Synopsis Peripheral Limitations on Spatial Vision by :

Book excerpt: This project employs psychophysical techniques to examine the limitations on spatial vision imposed by the first stages in the visual pathway. The appearance of very high frequency interference fringes is distorted, or aliased, by the cone mosaic. Such moire patterns allow us to assess the topography of the cone mosaic in the living eye, clarifying the relationship between cone spacing and resolution. Resolution was also measured under conditions in which only the M or L cones could detect the interference fringe. Visual acuity was little different than it was when both cone types detected the grating showing that resolution is immune to photoreceptor loss under these circumstances. We recently also established that a phenomenon known for 150 years has been misunderstood, and that it is chromatic aliasing caused by spatial sampling by M and L cones. A device has been constructed to provide objective measurements of the off-axis optical quality of the eye and measurements show that optical quality decline surprisingly little across the visual field. In addition, we have taken advantage of an early nonlinearity in the visual system to measure the spatial responses of the earliest stages in retinal processing.
Book Synopsis The Development Of Sensory, Motor And Cognitive Capacities In Early Infancy by : George Butterworth
Download or read book The Development Of Sensory, Motor And Cognitive Capacities In Early Infancy written by George Butterworth and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-06-20 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on the development of human infants has revealed remarkable capacities in recent years. Instead of stressing the limitations of the newborn, the modern approach is now more optimistically based on an assessment of the adaptive capabilities of the infant. Innate endowment, coupled with interaction with the physical and social environment, enables a developmental transition from processes deeply rooted in early perception and action to the cognitive and language abilities typical of the toddler.; This book reviews a number of issues in early human development. It includes a reconceptualization of the role of perception at the origins of development, a reconciliation of psychophysical and ecological approaches to early face perception, and building bridges between biological and psychological aspects of development in terms of brain structure and function. Topics covered include basic exploratory processes of early visual systems in early perception and action; face perception in newborns, species typical aspects of human communication, imitation, perception of the phonetic structure of speech, origins of the pointing gesture, handedness origins and development, theoretical contributions on perception and cognition, implicit and explicit knowledge in babies; sensory-motor coordination and cognition, information processing and cognition, perception, habituation and the development of intelligence from infancy.

Book excerpt: This highly original and interesting monograph puts forward ideas on visual processing and representation in the early stages of visual perception, and examines the computational requirements of the system and its psychological performance. Initially the author considers the computational theory of how the maximum amount of useful information about the scene can be registered from the variations in light intensity in the retinal image. He then goeson to address the question of just what it means to say that the visual system measures spatial aspects of the retinal image, and the consequences of the inevitable distortions that are introduced. He believes that the calculation of spatial position within a distorted metric is not trivial and requires dynamic processes with memory and control. Finally, Dr. Wan argues that the strength of the link between the low-level approaches of psychophysics and computational theory and high-level approaches of cognitive visual function lies in the logic of the arguments that indicate the computational need for control. This Essay will be of great interest to researchers in computer vision, perception, cognitive science and cognitive psychology.

Book Synopsis The Role of Eye Movements in Perceptual Processes by : E. Chekaluk
Download or read book The Role of Eye Movements in Perceptual Processes written by E. Chekaluk and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1992-07-06 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has become a truism that the frozen optical diagram representation of vision is the worst possible picture of the way in which we visually interact with the environment. Even apart from our reaction to moving targets by pursuit movements, our visual behaviour can be said to be characterised by eye movements. We sample from our environment in a series of relatively brief fixations which move from one point to another in a series of extremely rapid jerks known as saccades. Many questions arising from this characteristic of vision are explored within this volume, including the question of how our visual world maintains its perceptual stability despite the drastic changes in input associated with these eye movements.

Book Synopsis Early Visual Development, Normal and Abnormal by : Kurt Simons
Download or read book Early Visual Development, Normal and Abnormal written by Kurt Simons and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1960s, there has been great expansion of our understanding of the development of vision in early life. New techniques and technologies have provided unprecedented insights into the function of all the components of the visual system--optical, motor and neural--during this formative period. These insights have come from neurophysiological studies of animal models, electrophysiological and psychophysical studies of infants and young children, and clinical and other studies of such abnormal developmental conditions as amblyopia ("lazy eye"), nystagmus and prematurity. Despite this broadened scope of study of early visual development, there has never been a comprehensive single text or reference work definitively reviewing the entire field. This important work provides such an overview. Prepared under the auspices of the Committee on Vision of the National Academy of Sciences/National Research Council, its in-depth chapters are written by world authorities. Equally useful to the student or clinician looking for a convenient introduction to the field and to the researcher in seeking explicit detail, this book provides a new degree of integration of this diverse field.

Book Synopsis Right-Brained Children in a Left-Brained World by : Jeffrey Freed
Download or read book Right-Brained Children in a Left-Brained World written by Jeffrey Freed and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-07-17 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jeffrey Freed and Laurie Parsons provide an effective method for helping children with Attention Deficit Disorder excel in a classroom setting. In straightforward language, this book explains how to use the innovative "Learning Styles Inventory" to test for a right-brained learning style; help an ADD child master spelling—and build confidence—by committing complicated words to visual memory; tap an ADD kid's amazing speed-reading abilities by stressing sight recognition and scanning rather than phonics; access the child's capacity to solve math problems of increasing, often astonishing complexity—without pen or paper; capitalize on the "writing and weaning" technique to help the child turn mental images into written words; and win over teachers and principals to the right-brained approach the ADD child thrives on. For parents who have longed to help their ADD child quickly and directly, Freed and Parsons's approach is nothing short of revolutionary. This is the first book to offer them reason for hope and a clear strategy for enabling their child to blossom.

Book Synopsis Cognition and Perception by : Athanassios Raftopoulos
Download or read book Cognition and Perception written by Athanassios Raftopoulos and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2009-07-17 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An argument that there are perceptual mechanisms that retrieve information in cognitively and conceptually unmediated ways and that this sheds light on various philosophical issues. In Cognition and Perception, Athanassios Raftopoulos discusses the cognitive penetrability of perception and claims that there is a part of visual processes (which he calls “perception”) that results in representational states with nonconceptual content; that is, a part that retrieves information from visual scenes in conceptually unmediated, “bottom-up,” theory-neutral ways. Raftopoulos applies this insight to problems in philosophy of science, philosophy of mind, and epistemology, and examines how we access the external world through our perception as well as what we can know of that world. To show that there is a theory-neutral part of existence, Raftopoulos turns to cognitive science and argues that there is substantial scientific evidence. He then claims that perception induces representational states with nonconceptual content and examines the nature of the nonconceptual content. The nonconceptual information retrieved, he argues, does not allow the identification or recognition of an object but only its individuation as a discrete persistent object with certain spatiotemporal properties and other features. Object individuation, however, suffices to determine the referents of perceptual demonstratives. Raftopoulos defends his account in the context of current discussions on the issue of the theory-ladenness of perception (namely the Fodor-Churchland debate), and then discusses the repercussions of his thesis for problems in the philosophy of science. Finally, Raftopoulos claims that there is a minimal form of realism that is defensible. This minimal realism holds that objects, their spatiotemporal properties, and such features as shape, orientation, and motion are real, mind-independent properties in the world.
