Book excerpt: Recent attention in the chemical community has been focused on the energy efficient and environmentally benign conversion of abundant small molecules (CO2, H2O, etc.) to useful liquid fuels. This project addresses these goals by examining fundamental aspects of catalyst design to ultimately access small molecule activation processes under mild conditions. Specifically, Thomas and coworkers have targetted heterobimetallic complexes that feature metal centers with vastly different electronic properties, dictated both by their respective positions on the periodic table and their coordination environment. Unlike homobimetallic complexes featuring identical or similar metals, the bonds between metals in early/late heterobimetallics are more polarized, with the more electron-rich late metal center donating electron density to the more electron-deficient early metal center. While metal-metal bonds pose an interesting strategy for storing redox equivalents and stabilizing reactive metal fragments, the polar character of metal-metal bonds in heterobimetallic complexes renders these molecules ideally poised to react with small molecule substrates via cleavage of energy-rich single and double bonds. In addition, metal-metal interactions have been shown to dramatically affect redox potentials and promote multielectron redox activity, suggesting that metal-metal interactions may provide a mechanism to tune redox potentials and access substrate reduction/activation at mild overpotentials. This research project has provided a better fundamental understanding of how interactions between transition metals can be used as a strategy to promote and/or control chemical transformations related to the clean production of fuels. While this project focused on the study of homogeneous systems, it is anticipated that the broad conclusions drawn from these investigations will be applicable to heterogeneous catalysis as well, particularly on heterogeneous processes that occur at interfaces in multicomponent systems.

Book excerpt: In light of growing environmental and economic concerns, there is a motivated effort to mimic the two-electron reactivity of precious transition metal complexes using more abundant, affordable, and non-toxic first row transition metals. The main challenge in this effort is that more sustainable first row transition metals do not readily undergo two-electron redox processes, which comprise many industrially relevant catalytic mechanisms, instead preferring to participate in one-electron reactions. One of several ways the Thomas group has approached this challenge is by tethering a Lewis acidic early metal to an electron-rich late metal via a bifunctional phosphinoamide ligand framework, allowing access to highly reduced late metal centers that have been shown to more favorably undergo two-electron redox processes. This thesis explores how the electron-donating properties of the phosphinoamide ligand impact the structure and reactivity of a novel series of bis(phosphinoamide) Zr/Co complexes. This series employs a more electron-donating iPrNPiPr2- ligand, as opposed to the XylNPiPr2- ligand previously featured in the group’s bis(phosphinoamide) Zr/Co systems. The relative electron density at the cobalt center is qualified using multiple spectroscopic and computational methods, and structural comparisons are made between analogous Zr/Co complexes bearing different ligands. These data are used to determine how increasing the electron-donating ability of the bis(phosphinoamide) framework impacts the thermodynamics of bond activation and the overall structure-reactivity relationship of Zr/Co complexes.

Book excerpt: The synthesis and characterisation of a new class of multidentate conformationally flexible phosphino-alkene ligands, called dbaPHOS (127) and monodbaPHOS (128), are described is this PhD thesis. The related phosphine sulphide ligands, namely dbaTHIOPHOS (137) and monodbaTHIOPHOS (149), have also been prepared. The coordination chemistry of the novel ligands was investigated with a variety of late-transition metals, including Cu, Rh, Pd and Pt. X-ray crystal structure determination of the complexes containing these ligands highlights the multiple coordination modes and versatility of each ligand system. The ability of the 1,4-dien-3-one backbone to adopt different conformational geometries around metal centers is of particular note. DbaPHOS (127) was found to act as a cis- and trans-chelating bisphosphine in both square planar PdII and PtII complexes. The 1,4-dien-3-one motif is hemilabile; exchange between coordinated and non-coordinated alkenes is observed in both the Pd0 complex, 167, and the related cationic CuI complex, 193. An investigation into the CuI complexes' activity in the cyclopropanation of styrene, as catalysts, showed that they are commensurate with other recently reported systems. In addition to the coordination chemistry of the novel ligand systems, some interesting findings emerged in the ligand synthesis and characterisation studies. For example, monodbaTHIOPHOS (149) undergoes an interesting solid-state [2+2] intramolecular cycloaddition transformation, giving cycloadduct, 206. Furthermore, 2-hydroperoxytetrahydrofuran was found to be an impurity in the microwave-assisted Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons reaction of 2-(diphenylthiophosphine)benzaldehyde (136) with 1,3-bis-(ethoxyphosphonato)-acetone (130) to give of dbaTHIOPHOS (137) and an unexpected THF insertion product, 138. The latter is explained by a side reaction involving the reduced compound, tetrahydrofuran-2-ol, derived from 2-hydroperoxytetrahydrofuran.

Book excerpt: Activation and Functionalization of C-H Bonds explores recent developments in the reaction chemistry of solution-phase transition-metal based systems with simple hydrocarbons and with more complex organic molecules. More than 20 internationally leading research groups contributed to this volume, and their chapters cover such topics as fundamental theoretical and mechanistic studies of C-H bond activation by metal complexes, catalytic systems for alkane functionalization, and new applications in synthetic organic chemistry. An introductory chapter offers an overview of stoichiometric and catalytic reactions of C-H bonds with transition metal complexes. The C-H bond is the most widespread linkage in organic chemistry, present in virtually every organic molecule. Unfortunately, C-H bonds are famously resistant to selective chemical transformations. The development of methods for their selective transformations has enormous potential value in fields ranging from the chemistry of fuels (for example, the conversion of methane to methanol) to the synthesis of the most complex organic molecules.

Book excerpt: With an enormous velocity, olefin polymerization has expanded to one of the most significant fields in polymers since the first industrial use about 50 years ago. In 2005, 100 million tons of polyolefins were produced - the biggest part was catalyzed by metallorganic compounds. The Hamburg Macromolecular Symposium 2005 with the title "Olefin Polymerization" involved topics such as new catalysts and cocatalysts, kinetics, mechanism and polymer reaction engineering, synthesis of special polymers, and characterization of polyolefins. The conference combined scientists from different disciplines to discuss latest research results of polymers and to offer each other the possibility of cooperation. This is reflected in this volume, which contains invited lectures and selected posters presented at the symposium.
