Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Italian Love Stories But notwithstanding all that is lost in the re-telling, in a different language and at a different day, something remains, independent of both the old life and the old language, which the past has and can bestow even upon the unlettered readers of an alien country and an alien time, and that is the stories themselves, apart from their treatment and expression. Even retold their charm cannot, we are fain to hope, wholly evaporate. It is at all events possible to convey in some measure, by a simple recital of their contents, some idea of the positive genius for the picturesque in incident, episode, and surroundings, characteristic of the school to which they belong; of the blind intensity with which a single passion is painted, dominating and determining the living and dying of men and women of bygone generations; of the simple and undeviating directness of aim, good or evil, upon which the plots are constructed with such excellence of art that they seem a mere accident of instinct. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Italian Romance Writers An attempt to retrace modern romance through story, tale, fable, epic, ballad, and legend to its earliest origines in the dawn of civilization is outside the purpose of this work. Indeed, from the earliest imaginative narrative down to the tales of Daphnis and Chloe and of the Golden Ass, there was no real prototype of our novel. Doubtless the romance of the European Middle Ages, with its stories of chivalry and tales of love and adventure, was foreshadowed by the Greek and Latin epics. Those stories of the wanderings of Ulysses and of AEneas, of the siege of Troy, and of the search for the Golden Fleece. Doubtless also the Milesian Tales, recounting chiefly love in its grosser form, were the precedents of the Italian novelle and French fabliaux and chansons de geste. Yes, true as brain and heart can make them. I have not, like Froude "attempted in cold blood to impart verisimilitude to otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative." Earnestly and without regard to the labour involved I have sought the essential truth. Returning from rambles in northern Italy, where I have been a guest, as at Villa Giusti, in Edens whose Eves have been long forgotten by their own descendants I have sought until their faces were revealed in a darkening canvas on the wall of some old palace and their lives as by flash-light by poets such as Dante, Bonifazio, or Cino. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romances of Chivalry in Italian Verse: Selections The long paragraph just cited is a com pendium of the history of French epic matter in Italy. Through the phases which it indicates we shall now pass, noting, however, that once the Italians begin to develop the matter, the term epic, as applied to it, becomes rather conventional than exact.1 The lack of a truly national spirit, which, it would seem, ought to inform a genuinely epic composition, and the importance given to elements of romantic adventure, should incline us to term the Italian works romances of chivalry. Certainly they belong as much to the domain of novelistic fiction as to that of stem heroic narrative. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Famous Affinities of History: The Romance of Devotion The distinguished Italian historian, Signor Fer rero, the author of many books, has tried hard to eliminate nearly all the romantic elements from the tale, and to have us see in it not the triumph of love, but the blindness of ambition. Under his handling it becomes almost a sordid drama of man's pursuit of power and of woman's selfishness. Let us review the story as it remains, even after we have taken full account of Ferrero's criticism. Has the world for nineteen hundred years been blinded by a show of sentiment? Has it so absolutely been misled by those who lived and wrote in the days which followed closely on the events that make up this extraordinary narrative? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woman in Italy: From the Introduction of the Chivalrous Service of Love to the Appearance of the Professional Actress The fertile vigour of little Italian States from the thirteenth to the sixteenth century created a new world. Its momentum is still felt in literature, in art and in social life. It was then that woman began to emerge from the protective bondage which barbarism and social insecurity had rendered necessary. Now, all development has an economic basis, and the economic foundation for this exuberant vitality and novel freedom is to found in expanding commerce, regulated by the co-partnership of trade-associations. The intellectual energy of Italians, fostered by growing wealth and civic pride, culminated in that fine blossoming of life which we speak of as the High Renaissance. But most writers on the period have taught, and it has come to be generally credited, that the Renaissance was a time of exceptional moral depravity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Half-Forgotten Romances of American History It was winter in Virginia, A. D. 1607. Gone were the Italian blue skies of the spring and summer which had charmed the Jamestown settlers when the ships Godspeed, Susan Constant and the Discovery sailed up the Powhatan River, rechristened by the voyagers the "James" in honor of the King of England. The dogwood, wild cherry, crab apple, mulberry and persimmon trees had lost their blooms, but here and there through grim, white woods gleamed the red of the holly tree. On giant oaks clustered the white berry of the mistletoe, a strange reminder to the Englishmen of the Druid faith of their forefathers. In the Indian village, Werowocomoco, on the York River, lived the mighty Powhatan, chief of the region. The village was situated about three miles above the present Yorktown, where the lion of England surrendered in later years to the lion's cub, America. It was one of three capital villages of the Powhatan confederation of Indians. The others were Orapakes, on the Chickahominy River, near Powhatan, and Powhatan, near the present site of the city of Richmond. Werowocomoco was composed of 25 or 30 wigwams or houses built of saplings. These were planted at regular distances like posts, then bent over and tied together in the middle. The houses were built up by skillful application of barks and grasses adroitly interwoven. Their shape was either oblong or circular. Sixty stalwart warriors guarded the sacred person of Powhatan. Powhatan's domestic relations are quaintly put: "He had a multiplicity of women." It is apparent that Powhatan, in common with other royalties, followed King Solomon's practical advice and brought upon himself marital trouble by adding rather than reducing possibilities in the number of wives. Powhatan, however, had one kingly prerogative lesser mortals lack in these more progressive days. If he tired of a wife, he gave her away to a friend as a token of royal favor. Such an improvement on the modern divorce court! T. R. would have rejoiced in Powhatan's family. He had twenty sons and twelve daughters.
