This book was released on 2014-08-28 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps more than any other kind of book, manuscript miscellanies require a complex and ‘material’ reading strategy. This collection of essays engages the renewed and expanding interest in early modern English miscellanies, anthologies, and other compilations. Manuscript Miscellanies in Early Modern England models and refines the study of these complicated collections. Several of its contributors question and redefine the terms we use to describe miscellanies and anthologies. Two senior scholars correct the misidentification of a scribe and, in so doing, uncover evidence of a Catholic, probably Jesuit, priest and community in a trio of manuscripts. Additional contributors show compilers interpreting, attributing, and arranging texts, as well as passively accepting others’ editorial decisions. While manuscript verse miscellanies remain appropriately central to the collection, several essays also involve print and prose, ranging from letters to sermons and even political prophesies. Using extensive textual and bibliographical evidence, the collection offers stimulating new readings of literature, politics, and religion in the early modern period, and promises to make important interventions in academic studies of the history of the book.

Book excerpt: With Thoreau’s Walden as a touchstone, Buell offers an account of environmental perception, the place of nature in the history of Western thought, and the consequences for literary scholarship of attempting to imagine a more “ecocentric” way of being. In doing so, he provides a profound rethinking of our literary and cultural reflections on nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Fielding's Miscellanies, three volumes of poetry, essays, and satires, have never been studied in detail. Uneven in quality, often highly personal, they offer important insights into the concerns and growth of the English novelist. Mr. Miller has provided a reference guide to the First volume of the three, analyzing the writings and the intellectual traditions in which Fielding worked. Included in Volume One are poetry, formal essays, a translation from the Greek, and several satirical sketches and Lucianic dialogues. Here is Fielding experimenting with literary styles; adumbrated here are many of the themes and methods of the later novels, Tom Jones and Amelia in particular. In recording Fielding's intense moral concerns, his comic genius, and his ironic, incisive portraits of man and society, Volume One of the Miscellanies is a microcosm of his intellectual world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Essays In addition to the foregoing the reader will find several essays which appeared in periodicals, and have not before been reprinted. Considerable trouble has been expended in ransacking old volumes of the "London Review," "Westminster Review," etc., to unearth these. Two that will probably have most general interest are the reviews of Tennyson's poems and Carlye's "French Revolution." That Mill himself did not think it worth while to republish these is easily comprehensible. They were written simply as reviews, and their subjects lay apart from the sociological questions which towards the end of his life mainly engaged his attention. But for that very reason they have a special interest merits, and the fact that in both cases they show an early and independent appreciation of two of the greatest English writers of the nineteenth century, will do more than justify their republication. And a similar justification will apply to the other two essays on poetry. The concluding and important article on Bentham, to whose teaching Mill owed so much, and whose reputation may be said to owe in return so much to Mill, is one of those which appeared in the "Dissertations." The two appendices have been brought together for the first time from widely different sources, with a view to exhibiting in more completeness Mill's attitude towards his early master. Book excerpt: Featuring the most frequently taught female writers and texts of the early modern period, this Companion introduces the reader to the range, complexity, historical importance, and aesthetic merit of women's writing in Britain from 1500–1700. Presenting key textual, historical, and methodological information, the volume exemplifies new and diverse approaches to the study of women's writing. The book is clearly divided into three sections, covering: how women learnt to write and how their work was circulated or published; how and what women wrote in the places and spaces in which they lived, worked, and worshipped; and the different kinds of writing women produced, from poetry and fiction to letters, diaries, and political prose. This structure makes the volume readily adaptable to course usage. The Companion is enhanced by an introduction that lays out crucial framework and critical issues, and by chronologies that situate women's writings alongside political and cultural events.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecocriticism has steadily gained footing within the larger arena of early modern scholarship, and with the publication of well over a dozen monographs, essay collections, and special journal issues, literary studies looks increasingly ’green’; yet the field lacks a straightforward, easy-to-use guide to do with reading and teaching early modern texts ecocritically. Accessible yet comprehensive, the cutting-edge collection Ecological Approaches to Early Modern English Texts fills this gap. Organized around the notion of contact zones (or points of intersection, that have often been constructed asymmetrically-especially with regard to the human-nonhuman dichotomy), the volume reassesses current trends in ecocriticism and the Renaissance; introduces analyses of neglected texts and authors; brings ecocriticism into conversation with cognate fields and approaches (e.g., queer theory, feminism, post-coloniality, food studies); and offers a significant section on pedagogy, ecocriticism and early modern literature. Engaging points of tension and central interest in the field, the collection is largely situated in the 'and/or' that resides between presentism-historicism, materiality-literary, somatic-semiotic, nature-culture, and, most importantly, human-nonhuman. Ecological Approaches to Early Modern English Texts balances coverage and methodology; its primary goal is to provide useful, yet nuanced discussions of ecological approaches to reading and teaching a range of representative early modern texts. As a whole, the volume includes a diverse selection of chapters that engage the complex issues that arise when reading and teaching early modern texts from a green perspective.
