Additional contributors show compilers interpreting, attributing, and arranging texts, as well as passively accepting others’ editorial decisions. While manuscript verse miscellanies remain appropriately central to the collection, several essays also involve print and prose, ranging from letters to sermons and even political prophesies. Using extensive textual and bibliographical evidence, the collection offers stimulating new readings of literature, politics, and religion in the early modern period, and promises to make important interventions in academic studies of the history of the book.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Essays In addition to the foregoing the reader will find several essays which appeared in periodicals, and have not before been reprinted. Considerable trouble has been expended in ransacking old volumes of the "London Review," "Westminster Review," etc., to unearth these. Two that will probably have most general interest are the reviews of Tennyson's poems and Carlye's "French Revolution." That Mill himself did not think it worth while to republish these is easily comprehensible. They were written simply as reviews, and their subjects lay apart from the sociological questions which towards the end of his life mainly engaged his attention. But for that very reason they have a special interest merits, and the fact that in both cases they show an early and independent appreciation of two of the greatest English writers of the nineteenth century, will do more than justify their republication. And a similar justification will apply to the other two essays on poetry. The concluding and important article on Bentham, to whose teaching Mill owed so much, and whose reputation may be said to owe in return so much to Mill, is one of those which appeared in the "Dissertations." The two appendices have been brought together for the first time from widely different sources, with a view to exhibiting in more completeness Mill's attitude towards his early master. Organized around the notion of contact zones (or points of intersection, that have often been constructed asymmetrically-especially with regard to the human-nonhuman dichotomy), the volume reassesses current trends in ecocriticism and the Renaissance; introduces analyses of neglected texts and authors; brings ecocriticism into conversation with cognate fields and approaches (e.g., queer theory, feminism, post-coloniality, food studies); and offers a significant section on pedagogy, ecocriticism and early modern literature.
