Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the English Church Early Christianity in Britain before the Coming of the North Folk. - The memories of the first two or three hundred years of the life of the Church in Britain are but dim. It could not be otherwise, for there passed over the island in the filth and sixth centuries a crushing calamity such as no other Christian land has ever been subjected to. The long-drawn-out invasion of the North Folk lasted, thanks to the gallant resistance of the British people, nearly two centuries. The slow but ruthless conquest swept away - save in a remote district of the island - every trace of the old life. A few notices, however, of early writers tell us that prior to the great invasion from a very early period a Christian Church flourished in Britain. Thus Tertullian (circa A.D. 196-201) says "that places in Britain, not yet visited by the Romans, were subjected to Christ." Records of the very early Church Councils of Arles (A.D. 314), of Sardica (A.D. 347), of Ariminium (A.D. 359), mention the presence at these well-known assemblies of British bishops. Allusions also, which presuppose the antiquity of the Island Church are made by St Athanasius (circa A.D. 350), St Hilary of Poitiers (A.D. 350), St.Jerome (area A.D. 390), and St Chrysostom (circa A.D. 398), Hilary especially congratulating his British brethren on the freedom of their Church from the contagion of the heresy of Arius. The Coming of the North Folk. - The awful catastrophe which swept away the once flourishing British Church came about in this wise. The Roman Legions, sorely needed for the defence of Italy against the Northern Barbarians, were withdrawn from Britain circa A.D. 409. Some forty years later the Northmen in good earnest began their conquest of the island. For 150 to 200 years their slow but cruel devastations continued. In the end, the old life of Britain, its cities, its people, its faith had disappeared. Only a poor remnant of the Celtic inhabitants of the island, carrying with them their faith, found a refuge in the hills of Wales and Cumberland. The conquest of the North Folk was virtually complete in the last years of the sixth century. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early English Church Saxons; and thus all the provinces along the south ern coast of Britain, except Cornwall and part of Devonshire, were lost to Christianity. In the year 527, another great body, of Angles, invaded the eastern and midland districts, and by degrees con quering their way, established the kingdoms of Es sex, East Anglia, and Mercia. The kingdom of Northumberland had its rise still earlier, but it was not firmly settled till about a century after the landing of Hengist in Kent. Against these invaders the Britons made no effectual resistance but in the west of England, where their king Emrys, called also Aurelius Am brosius, one of the last Roman Britons, gained a great victory over Hengist, and drove him back into the province he had first occupied. When the West Saxons afterwards, under Cerdic, made an attempt to gain possession of Somersetshire, they were de feated with great loss by the famous king Arthur, at the British town of cair-badon, near Bath, to which they had laid siege, about a.d. 520. These victories seem to have settled the freedom of the Britons for that time in the West; and they remained for many years afterwards in Somerset, part of Devon, and Cornwall, under their own princes, as well as in Wales. In the North they defended themselves also for a long time in the mountains of Cumberland and Westmoreland. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chapters of Early English Church History The following Chapters are an expansion of Lectures which have been delivered to my Class, while we had Bede's History before us with a view to the Theological Final School. Wishing to connect them, in their present form, with their original purpose, I have retained a few colloquial phrases, and a few local allusions, which seemed natural in addressing a number of Oxford students, of whom several were personally well known to me. The first or introductory Chapter is devoted to the history of the ancient British Church. The general subject of the rest of the volume is the Age of the Conversion of the old-english people to Christianity a great, though comparatively a brief period, extending but little beyond a century, and closing naturally with the death, in 709, of their greatest native Bishop, him self the evangelizer of those among them who, from a peculiar isolation, were the last to receive the Faith. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Golden Days of the Early English Church, Vol. 1: From the Arrival of Theodore to the Death of Bede IT was many years ago, when I used to discuss early English history with Mr. Freeman (with whom I had more than one sharp polemic), that I formed the intention of sometime trying to analyse its early sources and to unriddle its difficulties and obscurities in greater accordance with modern scientific methods than do some popular guides. It is indeed rather scandalous that in this particular period of our national story we should be so far behind both the Germans and French in our methods of writing history, and should still present so much matter for criticism in our books on the subject. If it had stood alone, it would have been necessary to explain more fully the relation of the Church of England to other Churches in communion with her; but as the history of these sister Churches has already appeared, or will appear, in the same series, it has been thought sufficient to touch very lightly upon this important matter, especially as the vast amount of material to be worked up rendered it essential to economize space to the utmost possible degree. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the English Church, Vol. 1: First Period, From the Planting of the Church in Britain to the Accession of Henry VIII How constantly the Church of England is found struggling and contending against the encroachments and exactions of a foreign power, and asserting its rights against the ever-growing pretensions of Papal supremacy. It is. Time indeed that that shallow view of history, which sees in the Royal Supremacy a new invention of Henry VIII, were altogether discarded. The Church of England has been contending through out for national life, which it only fully reached in the sixteenth century. Thus, this volume is strictly introductory to the one already published in the same series, containing the History of the Reformation; and forms, together with it, a complete and continuous History of the Church of England. Divided into three sections, it yet forms one whole, for its one theme is the great conflict of Primitive Christianity with Paganism. The first section gives the narrative of the missions and persecutions of the Church; the second treats of its most illustrious representatives, and brings out their distinctive characteristics; it is entitled The Fathers of the Church of the Second and Third Centuries. The third section describes the great controversial conflict of Christianity, and contains a complete outline of the Apology of the Early Church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Church in the Eighteenth Century The authors are indebted to their reviewers for many kind remarks and much careful criticism. They have endeavoured to correct all errors which have been thus pointed out to them. As the nature of this work has sometimes been a little mis apprehended, it should be added that its authors at no time intended it to be a regular history. When they first mapped out their respective shares in the joint undertaking, their design nad been to write a number of short essays relating to many different features in the religion and Church history of England in the Eighteenth Century. This general purpose was adhered to and it was only after much deliberation that the word Chapters was substituted for Essays.' There was, however, one important modification. Fewer subjects were, in the issue, specifically dis cussed, but these more in detail while some questions - such, ' for instance, as that of the Church in the Colonies - were scarcely touched upon. Hence a certain disproportion of treatment, which a general introductory chapter could but partially remedy.
