It affords examples of perseverance against discouragement; of opposition, which might as truly be called by a severer name, in some cases, sadly successful for the hindrance of her progress. Yet as time passed lingering on, her features assumed a more cheerful aspect, and her present prosperity furnishes the assurance of a greater prosperity still in reserve. After the discovery of New England, its coasts were often visited long before the well known landing on Plymouth Rock. Some vessels came to perfect the discoveries; but more came attracted by the fisheries on its waters, and the peltry of its forests, and therein found a rich inducement to hazard the perils of a voyage to the newly found regions. As early as 1577, in one season three or four hundred fishing vessels came to the Banks of Newfoundland, among which the French and Spanish were more numerous than the Portuguese and English. He took with him sixteen colonists with directions to establish a settlement on some favorable point which he might select. Other colonial companies were sent out. By 1620 ships were visiting the Maine waters from Monhegan to Machias. It is probable that during the year 1623, when the Pilgrims at Plymouth were subduing the forest primeval, individuals commenced a permanent residence upon Arrowsic Island, near the mouth of the Sagadahoc: and upon the mainland, at the entrance of the river at Sheepscot, at Damariscotta, at Pemaquid and at St. George's River. Seven years after this, it was reported that eighty-four families, besides fishermen, were residing along the coast in this region. The heroic labors of the early itinerants and the struggle of the church to gain a foot-hold and maintain ail. Existence, under great disadvantages, are worthy of honorable remembrance. The labor required to obtain the material for the history, proves the work to' have been too long delayed. Church Records are generally kept imperfectly, and in some cases, entirely lost. And the memory of the oldest survivors is often obscure. To remedy these defects, -as far as possible, information has been sought in all sources. Town Histories; the journals of the General Conference; the journals and. Minutes of the annual Conferences have been carefully consulted. Methodist Histories and Memoirs, by Jesse Lee, Minton Thrift, Dr. N. Bangs, Dr. L. M. Lee. And especially the excellent Histories of Dr. Abel Stevens, have been freely drawn upon. Thanks are returned to those preachers of the Maine and East Maine Conferences who have responded to our circulars, and furnished sketches for the History; also to other persons for valuable historical material or the loan of books and other documents. No reasonable pains have been spared to make the volume a complete repertory of the facts of Methodist History in Maine, so arranged as to be convenient for use. The portraits are mostly from the photo-gravure Com-v pany of Chicago. The book is much larger, than was at first expected, in spite of careful efforts to condense. It was impossible to estimate in advance, the amount of printing required to carry out the plan adopted. Many sketches of circuits, stations and persons have been largely reduced. Something of this kind we have in a faded but still legible manuscript from the pen of Elder Hooper. It is dated, May the 30 day It is not a letter though, nor a diary. It is a part of Elder Hooper's Dedication Sermon. It contains the Introduction, and the first and part of the second divisions of the discourse. It ends abruptly in the middle of a sentence of the second division, the following pages having in some way become separated from these and lost. The Introduction precedes, instead of followingtthe announcement of the text, thus having the place recently given to it by German preachers, instead of that which it has in English and American sermons. In it Elder Hooper spoke of the great changes made in Paris in the twenty-four years passed between the coming of the first settlers and the time when he was speaking; of the state of things then existing; of the movement which resulted in building the meeting-house; and of the raising of the house, which was a work of difliculty and danger, which those of the present generation, who have never seen such structures raised, and raised without the appliances and helps of modern art and machinery, - can hardly realize. Elder Hooper said III the year 1780 the first settlers came into this Town, the[n] called No. 4, the plase being then entirely new and no roads. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Views of Maine HE City Hall is an imposing structure, on Congress Street, directly opposite Exchange Street, and the building of the Union Mutual Life Insurance Company. It has a frontage of one hundred and fifty feet, a length of two hundred and twenty-one feet, with corner towers seventy-five feet high, and a central dome rising to a height of one hundred and sixty feet. The cost of the building was 95650000, and it contains eighty rooms. On the second floor is the superb City Hall, one hundred and thirteen feet long, eighty feet wide, and thirtyfive feet high, with a seating capacity of twenty-five hundred. The First Parish Church, at the head of Temple Street on Congress Street, is constructed of undressed granite, and was built in 1825 on the site of the old church, which was built in 1740. There were only six pastors of this church from 1727 to 1885, among whom was the noted Rev. Thomas Smith, the first ordained minister after the settlement of the town. For many years he was the most distinguished preacher in this part of the country, and was the only physician as well. He lived under the reign of four sovereigns, and the presidency of George Washington, dying in l795, in the ninety-fourth year of his age, after a ministry here of sixty-eight years and two months. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Jay: Franklin County, Maine In attempting to write the early history of Jay, my native town, I have been influenced by three considerations: first, that no authentic history of the town has been written up to this date; second, that the opportunity for gathering the fragments of the early records of the town and gleaning from the fading memories of aged citizens the unwritten history of many important events connected with the lives of the early settlers will soon be lost forever; and third, that I have been induced by several of the contemporaries of my boyhood to take up the work because of the exceptional opportunities I have enjoyed for gathering up the materials for such a work. There are few persons who do not have a natural pride and interest in the place of their nativity and a desire to perpetuate the memories of their ancestors. But aside from these family considerations, it is an important duty of a town, and one which it owes to itself and the generations following, to have an authentic record of its early days placed in its archives for future reference. A thousand little incidents gathered from the lives of individuals or from private papers may cast light upon important questions that may arise in the future. A warrant for a town meeting or some other municipal regulation, apparently insignificant in itself, may fix a date or determine the motive of a transaction or exhibit the spirit of the age in which it occurred. In this history I have endeavored to give a true account of the early settlement and genealogy of the early settlers and their descendants for the first and second generations, together with the manners and customs of those days.
