By investigating a variety of socioeconomic spaces produced and perpetuated by Chinese monasteries, Michael J. Walsh reveals the "sacred economies" that shaped early Buddhism and its relationship with consumption and salvation. Centering his study on Tiantong, a Buddhist monastery that has thrived for close to seventeen centuries in southeast China, Walsh follows three main topics: the spaces monks produced, within and around which a community could pursue a meaningful existence; the social and economic avenues through which monasteries provided diverse sacred resources and secured the primacy of Buddhist teachings within an agrarian culture; and the nature of "transactive" participation within monastic spaces, which later became a fundamental component of a broader Chinese religiosity. It looks at how religion socializes youth to embody particular gendered ideals about morality and how youth, encountering these ideals, reinterpret them. It focuses on boys and young men who temporarily ordain as Buddhist monastics for several years in northern Thailand. Locating the construction of monastic masculinity--what it means to be a morally good man and ideal monastic--within interpersonal moments among monastics and between lay and monastic communities, this dissertation makes three broad arguments. First, the internalization of religious ideals is not a linear development across the life course. While adult monastics may adjust their bodily behavior to effect changes to their inner state of mind, boys' bodily adjustment to temporary monasticism is about performing social cohesion. The longer youth remain monastics, the more difficult this performance becomes as maintaining strict adherence to their ascetic rules becomes onerous. At the same time, lay supporters, whose generosity monastics depend upon, have high expectations that monastics will strictly follow their ascetic rules. Monastic and lay communities develop "asymmetrical orientations" towards the rules to find a middle ground between expectations and obligations. Second, notions that only certain kinds of men are morally capable of ordaining demonstrates the co-construction of gender and morality in the reproduction of dominant masculinities. Finally, this dissertation demonstrates how religious institutions like Buddhist monasticism may be not only a force for social reproduction and nation building but for effecting social change.

This thesis identifies common monastic practices from both Buddhism and Latin Catholic traditions in order to establish the venue where the two parties could meet and dialogue for common interests particularly on social projects. Typically, the purpose of qualitative inquiry is to identify and understand common themes from both traditions, essentially establishing a foundation for future quantitative encounter among the faiths of different religion in Myanmar. Monastic traditions in both Buddhism and Latin Catholic Church have been so significant for the quest for perfection. Although the two traditions have different convictions about the truth of faith, both traditions have certain monastic practices of purification of the mind or conversion of the heart through meditation or contemplation in the aspiration for perfection. Monastic life from both traditions is an exemplary integration of wisdom and compassion, contemplation and action. Christian interpretation of this concept is summed up as "love of God and love of neighbor". The thesis is divided into two parts; the first part looks at the historical development of monastic practice beginning from the nature and of its purpose from both Buddhism and Christianity. The second part identifies the common elements of monastic practices from both traditions. These common elements of monastic practices can establish a solid foundation for the launching of an interreligious dialogue, albeit modest at the outset between Myanmar Buddhism and the Latin Catholic Church for the sake of the common good in the country.

One popular band of itinerant proselytizers was the jishu from the Yugyo school, a gender inclusive Amida Pure Land Buddhist group. This dissertation details the particular circumstances of the jishu nuns through the evolving history of the Yugyo school. The aim is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the gender relations and the changing roles women played in this itinerant religious order. Based on the dominant Buddhist view of the status of women in terms of enlightenment, one would have expected the Buddhist schools to have provided only minimal opportunities for women. While the large institutionalized monasteries of the time do reflect this perspective, schools founded by hijiri practitioners, such as the early Yugyo school, contradict these expectations. This study has revealed that during the formation of the Yugyo school in the fourteenth century, jishu nuns held multiple and strong roles, including leadership of mix-gendered practice halls. Over time, as the Yugyo school became increasingly institutionalized, both in their itinerant practices and in their practice halls, there was a corresponding marginalization of the nuns. This thesis attempts to identify the causes of this change and argues that the conversion to a fixed lifestyle and the adoption of mainstream Buddhist doctrine discouraged the co-participation of women in their order.
