Book excerpt: Teachable Moments is a personal reflection on the world’s most familiar prayer taken from the lips of Jesus Himself, repeated in every language on a weekly basis in churches throughout the world. Written in a readable and thought-provoking style, Teachable Moments will prompt new thoughts about Jesus’s radical theology of God as Abba Father. When Jesus taught his disciples this brief prayer, he had an agenda much larger than just the words we pray. He was addressing our understanding of God and the nature of our relationship with God. He was teaching about the nature of citizenship in God’s Kingdom on earth as it is in heaven. Kingdom citizens practice forgiveness breaking the unhealthy cycle of revenge and retaliation. Jesus warned about temptation and the nature of pervasive evil in the world. Jesus’s goal was to correct all the wrong-headed misconceptions the world has accumulated about the one true God who He understood as Abba Father. Finally, this provocative book asks the all-important question: What kind of Jesus says and teaches things like these? Who is the Jesus we are following?

Download or read book Teachable Moments written by Peter Woods and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creative teaching is an art form – aesthetic, intuitive and expressive. The proliferation of new educational policies in the early 1990s and the related increase in tensions and dilemmas facing schools, combined with the growing demand for a wider range of skills and knowledge among children meant that there was an even greater need for creative teaching than before the National Curriculum. Originally published in 1996, this book addresses this need by: exploring the features of creative teaching with a focus on the day to day practice of primary teachers; showing how teachers used emotion, created atmosphere and stimulated imagination to enhance their teaching; examining the ways in which teachers managed the National Curriculum and developed a new professional discourse in response to government pressures at the time. This book is a sequel to Creative Teachers in Primary Schools and builds upon this work providing new insights into the art of teaching.

Download or read book Teachable Moments and the Science of Education written by Greg Seals and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops a general theory of autonomous teaching by examining a mysterious educational idea: the teachable moment. By formulating an understanding of the teachable moment as predicated upon ‘educational energy,’ this book takes up John Dewey’s view of teaching to articulate a law-like, scientifically oriented pedagogical theory. By offering a testable hypothesis about effective teaching through an innovative reading of Dewey’s law, this book also provides insights into changes in school practice and schooling policy consonant with an understanding of teaching as a science.

Book Synopsis Seeing Through Race by : W. J. T. Mitchell
Download or read book Seeing Through Race written by W. J. T. Mitchell and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-29 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to W. J. T. Mitchell, a “color-blind” post-racial world is neither achievable nor desirable. Against popular claims that race is an outmoded construct that distracts from more important issues, Mitchell contends that race remains essential to our understanding of social reality. Race is not simply something to be seen but is among the fundamental media through which we experience human otherness. Race also makes racism visible and is thus our best weapon against it. The power of race becomes most apparent at times when pedagogy fails, the lesson is unclear, and everyone has something to learn. Mitchell identifies three such moments in America’s recent racial history. First is the post–Civil Rights moment of theory, in which race and racism have been subject to renewed philosophical inquiry. Second is the moment of blackness, epitomized by the election of Barack Obama and accompanying images of blackness in politics and popular culture. Third is the “Semitic Moment” in Israel-Palestine, where race and racism converge in new forms of anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. Mitchell brings visual culture, iconology, and media studies to bear on his discussion of these critical turning points in our understanding of the relation between race and racism.

Book Synopsis The End of the World and Other Teachable Moments by : Michael Naas
Download or read book The End of the World and Other Teachable Moments written by Michael Naas and published by Fordham University Press. This book was released on 2014-10-15 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The End of the World and Other Teachable Moments follows the remarkable itinerary of Jacques Derrida’s final seminar, “The Beast and the Sovereign” (2001–3), as the explicit themes of the seminar—namely, sovereignty and the question of the animal—come to be supplemented and interrupted by questions of death, mourning, survival, the archive, and, especially, the end of the world. The book begins with Derrida’s analyses, in the first year of the seminar, of the question of the animal in the context of his other published works on the same subject. It then follows Derrida through the second year of the seminar, presented in Paris from December 2002 to March 2003, as a very different tone begins to make itself heard, one that wavers between melancholy and an extraordinary lucidity with regard to the end. Focusing the entire year on just two works, Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe and Martin Heidegger’s seminar of 1929–30, “The Fundamental Concepts of Metaphysics,” the seminar comes to be dominated by questions of the end of the world and of an originary violence that at once gives rise to and effaces all things. The End of the World and Other Teachable Moments follows Derrida as he responds from week to week to these emerging questions, as well as to important events unfolding around him, both world events—the aftermath of 9/11, the American invasion of Iraq—and more personal ones, from the death of Maurice Blanchot to intimations of his own death less than two years away. All this, the book concludes, makes this final seminar an absolutely unique work in Derrida’s corpus, one that both speaks of death as the end of the world and itself now testifies to that end—just one, though hardly the least, of its many teachable moments.
Book Synopsis The Evolution of Paleolithic Technologies by : Steven L. Kuhn
Download or read book The Evolution of Paleolithic Technologies written by Steven L. Kuhn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-14 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Evolution of Paleolithic Technologies provides a novel perspective on long-term trajectories of evolutionary change in Paleolithic tools and tool-makers. Members of the human lineage have been producing stone tools for more than 3 million years. These artefacts provide key evidence for important evolutionary developments in hominin behaviour and cognition. Avoiding conventional approaches based on progressive stages of development, this book instead examines global trends in six separate dimensions of technological behaviour between 2.6 million and 10,000 years ago. Combining these independent trends results in both a broader and a more finely punctuated perspective on key intervals of change in hominin behaviour. To draw this picture together, the concluding section explores behavioural, cognitive, and demographic implications of developments in material culture and technological procedures at seven key intervals during the Pleistocene. Researchers interested in Paleolithic archaeology will find this book invaluable. It will also be of interest to archaeologists researching stone tool technology and to students of human evolution and behavioural change in prehistory.
