Book Synopsis Homogenization of Coupled Phenomena in Heterogenous Media by : Jean-Louis Auriault
Download or read book Homogenization of Coupled Phenomena in Heterogenous Media written by Jean-Louis Auriault and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-01-05 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both naturally-occurring and man-made materials are often heterogeneous materials formed of various constituents with different properties and behaviours. Studies are usually carried out on volumes of materials that contain a large number of heterogeneities. Describing these media by using appropriate mathematical models to describe each constituent turns out to be an intractable problem. Instead they are generally investigated by using an equivalent macroscopic description - relative to the microscopic heterogeneity scale - which describes the overall behaviour of the media. Fundamental questions then arise: Is such an equivalent macroscopic description possible? What is the domain of validity of this macroscopic description? The homogenization technique provides complete and rigorous answers to these questions. This book aims to summarize the homogenization technique and its contribution to engineering sciences. Researchers, graduate students and engineers will find here a unified and concise presentation. The book is divided into four parts whose main topics are Introduction to the homogenization technique for periodic or random media, with emphasis on the physics involved in the mathematical process and the applications to real materials. Heat and mass transfers in porous media Newtonian fluid flow in rigid porous media under different regimes Quasi-statics and dynamics of saturated deformable porous media Each part is illustrated by numerical or analytical applications as well as comparison with the self-consistent approach.
Book Synopsis Transport Processes in Porous Media by : Jacob Bear
Download or read book Transport Processes in Porous Media written by Jacob Bear and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 807 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the invited lectures presented during the NATO/ASI conducted in Pullman, Washington, July 9-18, 1989. This is the third in a series of NATO/ASIs on transport phenomena in porous media. The first two, which took place at Newark, Delaware in 1982 and 1985, are devoted to various topics related to the Fundamentals of Transport Processes in Porous Media. The contents of the books resulting from previous NATO/ASIs are given at the end of this book. Transport of extensive quantities such as mass of a fluid phase, mass of chemical species carried by a fluid phase, energy and electric charge in porous media, as encountered in a large variety of engineering disciplines, is an emerging interdisciplinary field. The groundwater flow, the simultaneous flow of gas, oil and water in petroleum reservoirs, the movement and accumulation of pollutants in the saturated and unsaturated subsurface zones, thermal energy storage in reservoirs, land subsidence in response to charges in overburden loads, or to pumping of fluids from underground formations, wave propagation in seismic investigations or as produced by earthquakes, chemical reactors, water flow through sand filters and the movement of fluids through kidneys, may serve as examples of fields in which the theory of transport in porous media is employed.
Book Synopsis Rock and Soil Rheology by : N. Cristescu
Download or read book Rock and Soil Rheology written by N. Cristescu and published by Springer. This book was released on 1988 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first part of the volume contains theoretical considerations of the physical properties of soils and rocks. Articles on the mechanical and kinematical behavior of rocks as well as mathematical models are the base for the understanding of the physical properties of natural systems. In the second part articles deal with experiments and applications regarding creep deformation of clay, underground cavities, tunnels and deformation of sand and lamistrine sediments.

Book Synopsis Modern Issues in Non-Saturated Soils by : A. Gens
Download or read book Modern Issues in Non-Saturated Soils written by A. Gens and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-04 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coupling phenomena in non-saturated soils are fast becoming a headache for at least one of the following reasons: the large number of equations and unknowns, the complex T.H.M. behaviour of the soils, the sophisticated instrumentation required and/or the numerical instability encountered. If this is precisely your headache, read about the problem - and solutions to it - in "Modern Issues in Non-Saturated Soils”.
Book Synopsis IUTAM Symposium on Mechanics of Granular and Porous Materials by : N.A. Fleck
Download or read book IUTAM Symposium on Mechanics of Granular and Porous Materials written by N.A. Fleck and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume constitutes the Proceedings of the IUT AM Symposium on Mechanics of Granular and Porous Materials, held in Cambridge from 15th to 17th July 1996. The objectives were: 1. To review existing experimental results and practical phenomena on the flow and compaction of particulate media; 2. To review the current state of constitutive models, and their implementation for predicting the macroscopic response. 3. Identification of the shortcomings of existing models and procedures in understanding practical phenomena. The Symposium brought together the research communities of solid mechanics, materials science, geomechanics, chemical engineering and mathematics to review current knowledge of the flow and compaction of granular and porous media. The meeting emphasised the development and use of constitutive laws to model practical processes such as mixing, drainage and drying, compaction of metal and ceramic powders and soils, and instabilities associated with these processes. A common theme was to develop constitutive models from an understanding of the underlying physical mechanisms of deformation and fracture. It was particularly rewarding to find that the separate research communities came together during the meeting and came to a consensus as to the main mechanisms of deformation and failure of particulate and porous solids.

Book Synopsis Mechanics of Poroelastic Media by : A.P.S. Selvadurai
Download or read book Mechanics of Poroelastic Media written by A.P.S. Selvadurai and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1996-01-31 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Mechanics of Poroelastic Media the classical theory of poroelasticity developed by Biot is developed and extended to the study of problems in geomechanics, biomechanics, environmental mechanics and materials science. The contributions are grouped into sections covering constitutive modelling, analytical aspects, numerical modelling, and applications to problems. The applications of the classical theory of poroelasticity to a wider class of problems will be of particular interest. The text is a standard reference for researchers interested in developing mathematical models of poroelasticity in geoenvironmental mechanics, and in the application of advanced theories of poroelastic biomaterials to the mechanics of biomaterials.
