This book was released on 2005 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climatic conditions significantly influenced growth of walleye in North America. Genetically distinct walleye populations appear to have developed their own adaptation strategies to respond to their regional climatic conditions. Walleye early growth rate showed a significant latitudinal trend: the populations at low latitudes, experiencing high thermal input, had a high early growth rate (o) and a high value for k, the rate of approaching asymptotic length (Linfinity) as defined in the von Bertalanffy growth model. However, the impact of climatic conditions on walleye growth in later life, as characterized by L infinity was not significant. In Lake Erie, three walleye sub-populations (i.e. the western basin, Van Buren Bay, and Grand River) showed distinct demographic characteristics. The western basin walleye had a lower early growth rate than the eastern basin walleye. The differences in early growth rate among these walleye subpopulations were associated with the differences in thermal regimes experienced by each sub-population during the growing season. The overheated western basin provided the worst growth habitat for walleye during summer/fall. Younger fish cannot avoid these overheated conditions and thus may be exhibiting reduced growth rates because of the unsuitable growth habitat in the western basin. The survival rates of adult walleye in the eastern basin were higher than the lakewide average, but the abundance was less than one percent of the lakewide adult walleye abundance. The warmer and clearer water conditions in 1998 created more walleye habitat than in 1993. The increases in water temperature and decreases in water level that may result from climate change will have different impacts on the habitat suitable for walleye among the three basins, with the greatest effect in the western basin. A simulation study showed that density-dependent early survival and density-dependent adult growth and egg production significantly affect the dynamics of the walleye metapopulation in Lake Erie. Walleye early survival (i.e. recruitment) could be a bottleneck, setting the overall sizes of the western basin and eastern basin sub-populations. This bottleneck would be sensitive to the changes in habitat expected from climate change.

Book excerpt: Modern North American sturgeons and paddlefish are the result of 100 million years of evolution. Once an integral part of aboriginal culture, their numbers were decimated by overfishing and habitat destruction during the past two centuries. This book details the extensive science aimed at helping these remarkable species recover from the brink of extinction, and describes the historical, biological, and ecological importance of North American sturgeon and paddlefish. The text is enhanced by photographs and detailed line drawings. This comprehensive volume will be an invaluable resource for researchers, educators, and consultants, in academic and government settings, who work to further scientific understanding of these fishes. No other single compilation has documented current information in such detail.

Themanual has been written to standardize the many methods andtechniques which have been devised over the past several decades. Lakes and streams are dealt with separately. Identification, location definition, mapping, chemical and physical parameters, sampling, documentation and preservation of fish andinvertebrates, and completion of reports are covered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent studies have increasingly demonstrated the widespread existence of spatio-temporal variations in the abundance and distribution of species of freshwater fishes, previously assumed not to move between habitats. These movements are often on a seasonal or ontogenetic basis, for spawning, feeding and refuge, and in many cases are fundamental for the successful completion of lifecycles. This important book provides a single source for a range of previously widely dispersed information on these movements of fish in fresh waters, covering potamodromous fishes as well as the more familiar diadromous species, worldwide. Contents include full descriptions of types of migration and spatial behaviour, the stimulus and capacity for fish to migrate, the effects of climate on patterns of migratory behaviour, a taxonomic analysis (mostly by family) of freshwater fish migration, methods for studying migration, and details of the impacts of man's activities on freshwater fish migration. Migration of Freshwater Fishes provides an excellent and comprehensive reference to which the river manager, biologist or student can now refer to obtain information, advice and current opinion on the migratory behaviour of most taxonomic groups of fishes occurring in fresh water. University libraries and aquatic research stations should also have copies of this essential reference book on their shelves. Well-known international authors. Of great commercial importance to fisheries and professional angling bodies. Draws together much new information in one place. Detailed review of world wide migratory behaviour for most groups of freshwater fishes. Pure and applied relevance, for academics, fisheries scientists, river managers and conservationists. This comprehensive book includes 67 tables and figures and over 1,400 references.
