Book excerpt: Spectroscopy, the study of matter via its interactions with light, is a vast subject that includes many of humanity's principle means of probing the fundamental structure of matter. Though usually understood from the perspective of classical light, important effects arise due to the quantum nature of the electromagnetic field. Additionally, the quantum vacuum can serve as an effective couple between molecules in the system, generating many-body interactions and cooperative processes in the material. While many techniques are well-described classically, quantum-field corrections can dominate the desired signals in certain cases, such as cascading in higher-order n-wave mixing signals, and are key for experimental interpretation. Even spontaneous emission and light scattering are best understood from the perspective of quantum fields. In this thesis, we utilize a systematic procedure, based on the density matrix in Liouville space, to give a rigorous description of elementary quantum-field effects in nonlinear spectroscopy, with specific examples made to ultrafast x-ray and optical techniques.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis focuses on nonlinear spectroscopy from a quantum optics perspective. First, it provides a detailed introduction to nonlinear optical signals; starting from Glauber’s photon counting formalism, it establishes the diagrammatic formulation, which forms the backbone of nonlinear molecular spectroscopy. The main body of the thesis investigates the impact of quantum correlations in entangled photon states on two-photon transitions, with a particular focus on the time-energy uncertainty, which restricts the possible simultaneous time and frequency resolution in measurements. It found that this can be violated with entangled light for individual transitions. The thesis then presents simulations of possible experimental setups that could exploit this quantum advantage. The final chapter is devoted to an application of the rapidly growing field of multidimensional spectroscopy to trapped ion chains, where it is employed to investigate nonequilibrium properties in quantum simulations.

Book excerpt: This thesis focuses on theoretical analysis of the sophisticated ultrafast optical experiments that probe the crucial first few picoseconds of quantum light harvesting, making an important contribution to quantum biology, an exciting new field at the intersection of condensed matter, physical chemistry and biology. It provides new insights into the role of vibrational dynamics during singlet fission of organic pentacene thin films, and targeting the importance of vibrational dynamics in the design of nanoscale organic light harvesting devices, it also develops a new wavelet analysis technique to probe vibronic dynamics in time-resolved nonlinear optical experiments. Lastly, the thesis explores the theory of how non-linear “breather” vibrations are excited and propagate in the disordered nanostructures of photosynthetic proteins.

This question - fundamental to quantum mechanics - puzzled leading scientists such as Schrödinger and Heisenberg and is still asked by students. James D. Macomber's book was the first to provide a didactic and unified approach to the answer, which has now been updated by way of recent experimental results and modern theoretical interpretations written by leading scientists. It provides an understanding for similarities among the spectroscopic methods available and is stimulating to read, reflecting the excitement of scientific research.

Book excerpt: This introductory level text addresses the broad range of nonequilibrium phenomena observed at short time scales. It focuses on the important questions of correlations and memory effects in dense interacting systems. Experiments on very short time scales are characterized, in particular, by strong correlations far from equilibrium, by nonlinear dynamics, and by the related phenomena of turbulence and chaos. The impressive successes of experiments using pulsed lasers to study the properties of matter and of the new methods of analysis of the early phases of heavy ion reactions have necessitated a review of the available many-body theoretical methods. The aim of this book is thus to provide an introduction to the experimental and theoretical methods that help us to understand the behaviour of such systems when disturbed on very short time scales.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a systematic discussion of experimental approaches to investigating the nonlinear interaction of ultrashort visible strong fields with dielectrics directly in the time domain. The key finding is the distinctly different peak-intensity dependence of the light-matter energy transfer dynamics on the one hand, and the observed transient optical and electronic modifications on the other. As the induced electron dynamics evolve on sub-femtosecond timescales, real-time spectroscopy requires attosecond temporal resolution. This allows a range of parameters to be identified where the optical properties of the samples exposed to ultrashort light fields suffer dramatic changes allowing signal metrology while real absorption leading to dissipation is essentially absent. These findings indicate the feasibility of efficient optical switching at frequencies several orders of magnitude faster than current state-of-the-art electronics and thus have far-reaching technological consequences.

Book excerpt: The field of ultrafast nonlinear optics is broad and multidisciplinary, and encompasses areas concerned with both the generation and measurement of ultrashort pulses of light, as well as those concerned with the applications of such pulses. Ultrashort pulses are extreme events – both in terms of their durations, and also the high peak powers which their short durations can facilitate. These extreme properties make them powerful experiment tools. On one hand, their ultrashort durations facilitate the probing and manipulation of matter on incredibly short timescales. On the other, their ultrashort durations can facilitate high peak powers which can drive highly nonlinear light-matter interaction processes. Ultrafast Nonlinear Optics covers a complete range of topics, both applied and fundamental in nature, within the area of ultrafast nonlinear optics. Chapters 1 to 4 are concerned with the generation and measurement of ultrashort pulses. Chapters 5 to 7 are concerned with fundamental applications of ultrashort pulses in metrology and quantum control. Chapters 8 and 9 are concerned with ultrafast nonlinear optics in optical fibres. Chapters 10 to 13 are concerned with the applications of ultrashort pulses in areas such as particle acceleration, microscopy, and micromachining. The chapters are aimed at graduate-student level and are intended to provide the student with an accessible, self-contained and comprehensive gateway into each subject.

Book excerpt: Over the last few years, there has been a convergence between the fields of ultrafast science, nonlinear optics, optical frequency metrology, and precision laser spectroscopy. These fields have been developing largely independently since the birth of the laser, reaching remarkable levels of performance. On the ultrafast frontier, pulses of only a few cycles long have been produced, while in optical spectroscopy, the precision and resolution have reached one part in Although these two achievements appear to be completely disconnected, advances in nonlinear optics provided the essential link between them. The resulting convergence has enabled unprecedented advances in the control of the electric field of the pulses produced by femtosecond mode-locked lasers. The corresponding spectrum consists of a comb of sharp spectral lines with well-defined frequencies. These new techniques and capabilities are generally known as “femtosecond comb technology. ” They have had dramatic impact on the diverse fields of precision measurement and extreme nonlinear optical physics. The historical background for these developments is provided in the Foreword by two of the pioneers of laser spectroscopy, John Hall and Theodor Hänsch. Indeed the developments described in this book were foreshadowed by Hänsch’s early work in the 1970s when he used picosecond pulses to demonstrate the connection between the time and frequency domains in laser spectroscopy. This work complemented the advances in precision laser stabilization developed by Hall.

Book excerpt: This volume contains contributions based on the lectures delivered at the Third In ternational Workshop on Nonlinear Dynamics and Quantum Phenomena in Opti cal Systems, which was held in Blanes, Girona, Spain, 1-3 October 1990. Blanes is a charming small town located on the well-known Costa Brava. With the con venient facilities of the Centre for Advanced Studies (CEAB), Blanes followed of the previous meetings of this series, which were held at Palma the tradition de Mallorca and Santander. We aimed to provide an opportunity for scientists active in the broad field of quantum optics to meet in an informal atmosphere, thus promoting the ex change of ideas and allowing a search for interconnections between seemingly unrelated topics and a cross fertilization of the different subfields of quantum optics. We encouraged contributions dealing with the newest and most important developments in quantum optics. The main topics included instabilities, chaos, spatiotemporal dynamics, and pattern formation in lasers and nonlinear optical devices; phase dynamics; generation and detection of squeezed and other non classical states of light; coherent interaction of light with atomic systems; and multiphoton processes and above-threshold ionization. The meeting brought together a group of 72 optical scientists from Belgium, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, USA, and USSR. In the technical program, nine invited papers were included, presented by eight distinguished specialists.
