Book excerpt: This book is the first comprehensive documentation and interpretation of modern neritic carbonate sediments on the southern Australian continental margin, the largest cool-water carbonate depositional system on the globe. The approach is classical but the information is new. A brief chapter of introduction is followed by a section that describes the setting of the continental margin in terms of the regional geology, its evolution through time, the climate, and the complex oceanography. The setting is further explored in chapter 3 that outlines the Pleistocene history of sedimentation in this region. This is particularly important since many of the surficial sediments have a partial older history. The following section on the carbonate factory describes in detail the nature of the animals and plants that determine the nature of the sediments and the environmental conditions that control their distribution. The shelf itself cannot be discussed in isolation and thus a short chapter on the marginal marine environment is presented. The core of the book comprises two chapters that document the suite of depositional facies and their composition and then the suite of depositional environments where these sediments are found. The variety of deposits in this vast area is such that three chapters are devoted to the character of the materials on the southwestern shelf the south Australian sea and the southeastern shelf. The diagenesis that affects these sediments is tackled in a chapter after all the attributes are documented because they are intimately linked to different controls. The book finishes with a summary chapter that also addresses the various controls on sedimentation and models the effects to be expected when these are changed outside those present in the current realm. Audience: The book is an invaluable source of information about this vast region and will be a critical reference for researchers, graduate students, and professionals engaged in marine and environmental research. The present volume contains 30 papers summarizing the different subjects of the seminar. Environmental factors such as light, temperature, and water depth directly affect these biological processes. Abiotic carbonate precipitation is discussed. Three carbonate factories are identified: shallow water tropical; deep water mud mound; cool-water factory developed in high and low latitudes. Basic attributes of each factory are developed. The rimmed shelf and ramp facies models of the tropical factory are detailed with the Belize shelf and Middle East Abu Dhabi as examples. The facies tract of the mud mound factory is detailed and the Devonian Canning Basin used as an example. The role of sea-level changes and carbonate sedimentation in platform development is discussed. High sea-level carbonate sediment shedding combined with lowstand sediment starvation is opposite to what is seen in regions of siliciclastic sedimentation. The dominance and importance of the Dunham rock classification is stressed. Finally, lacustrine carbonates are discussed using the African rift lakes as modern examples and developing a simple model of continental rift lake carbonate sedimentation emphasizing potential source rock and reservoir facies. The Brazil Cretaceous subsalt play of the south Atlantic rift and the potential of its African counterpart are discussed.

The notion that autogenic processes are local phenomena of short duration and distance is now recognized as false. Understanding autogenic dynamics in sedimentary systems is thus essential for deciphering the morphodynamics of moderns sedimentary systems, accurately reconstructing Earth history, and predicting the spatial and temporal distribution of sedimentary and paleobiologic features in the stratigraphic record. The thirteen papers in this volume present exciting new ideas and research related to autogenic dynamics and self-organization in sedimentology, stratigraphy, ecology, paleobiology, sedimentary geochemistry, and diagenesis. Five papers summarize the current state of thinking about autogenic processes and products in fluvial-deltaic, eolian, and carbonate depositional systems, and in paleobiologic and geochemical contexts.
