Book excerpt: Magnetically Assisted Fluidized Bed (MAFB) is a novel technology where an external magnetic field interacts with magnetically susceptible particles. The magnetic field creates two types of forces: external and interparticle forces. The magnetic field decays linearly from bottom to top, having its maximun at distributor plate. A mathematical model based on interaction of ideal dipoles is proposed to account for the interparticle magnetic force. Alginate beads, containing ferromagnetic powder, are used as discrete phase and tap water as the fluidizing media. Experiments of pressure drop, bed expansion, mixing-segregation, and selective magnetic separation in a cylindrical and rectangular columns are tested. The fluid dynamics and particle motion are simulated by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Particle Discrete Method (DPM), respectively. The CFD uses the SIMPLE method to integrate the volume-averaged Navier-Stokes equations and the DPM is based on the Newton equation of motion. A FORTRAN code, named AZTECA, is developed to simulate all experiments, handling almost 4,000 particles in a 2-D layer. The data post-processing is done with a Visual Basic code, named BOLITAS.

Book excerpt: Assemblages of microscopic colloidal particles exhibit fascinating collective motion when energized by electric or magnetic fields. The behaviors range from coherent vortical motion to phase separation and dynamic self-assembly. While colloidal systems are relatively simple, understanding their collective response, especially in out of equilibrium conditions, remains elusive. Here, we report on the emergence of flocking and global rotation in the system of rolling ferromagnetic microparticles energized by a vertical alternating magnetic field. By combing experiments and discrete particle simulations, we have identified primary physical mechanisms leading to the emergence of largescale collective motion: spontaneous symmetry breaking of the clock / counterclockwise particle rotation, collisional alignment of particle velocities, and random particle re-orientations due to shape imperfections. We have also shown that hydrodynamic interactions between the particles do not have a qualitative effect on the collective dynamics. Lastly, our findings shed light on the onset of spatial and temporal coherence in a large class of active systems, both synthetic (colloids, swarms of robots, biopolymers) and living (suspensions of bacteria, cell colonies, bird flocks).

Hydrodynamic interaction is propagated through the fluid in which the colloids displace due to the flow they create during their motion. It can lead to the emergence of collective phenomena, such as the self-assembly of more complex structures. Hydrodynamic interactions are not the only present in the system, since other forces may be acting between colloids, or there can be external fields acting on them such as gravity. We present our study for two different systems: magnetic colloids and Janus particles. When applying a circular magnetic field, we can induce a rotation to a particle possessing a magnetic moment. Due to the coupling of the flow with the one created by surrounding particles and with system interfaces, a rotor will eventually self-propel. Two magnetic moments interact with each other through the magnetic dipole-dipole force, which tends to align them into arrays. We study how the balance between hydrodynamic, magnetic and gravitational forces determines the morphology of the structures magnetic colloids can form. Janus particles have two faces with different chemical properties, thus the interaction between them depends on their relative orientation. We study the morphology and order of the structures that can emerge for these particles as a function of the intensity, sign and reach of the interaction between them, as well as the type of flow they create when self-propelling. Methodologically, we have combined the use of far-field theory to draw analytical expressions that have given us qualitative insight on the results we could expect with high-performance computing simulations which have allowed us to extend our study to bigger systems.
