Book excerpt: Interfacial science has rapidly expanded beyond the original realm of chemistry to include specialized subfields. This book covers an exapnding body of work dealing with the dynamics and thermodynamics of molecular systems in spatial confinement. Participants from various disciplines share their views on how ultrasmall geometries can force a system to behave in ways significantly different than its behavior in bulk, how this difference affects molecular properties, and how it is probed. Investigators are studying phenomena in a broad range of materials, and confinement of liquids is also an important issue. Advances in experiment, theory, and computation have greatly increased our understanding of dynamics in confined systems, but this book proves that there is still much to be learned. Topics include: confined and anomalous dynamics in porous, supramolecular and biological systems; methods to probe dynamics in confinement; microfluidics and hydrodynamics near solid surfaces; friction and structural properties of fluids under shear; dynamic force spectroscopy; and numerical modeling and computational techniques of confined systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new book celebrates a decade for this popular series on dynamics in small confining systems. The book covers a broad range of topics related to static and dynamic properties of confining systems: probing of confined systems, structure and dynamics of liquids at interfaces, nanorheology and tribology, adsorption, diffusion in pores, polymers and membranes, dielectric relaxation and biological aspects. Participants from various disciplines share different points of view on the questions of how ultrasmall geometries can force a system to behave in ways significantly different from its behavior in the bulk, how this difference affects molecular properties, and how it is probed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nobel Prize of 1986 on Sc- ning Tunneling Microscopy sig- led a new era in imaging. The sc- ning probes emerged as a new i- trument for imaging with a pre- sion suf?cient to delineate single atoms. At ?rst there were two – the Scanning Tunneling Microscope, or STM, and the Atomic Force Mic- scope, or AFM. The STM relies on electrons tunneling between tip and sample whereas the AFM depends on the force acting on the tip when it was placed near the sample. These were quickly followed by the - gneticForceMicroscope,MFM,and the Electrostatic Force Microscope, EFM. The MFM will image a single magnetic bit with features as small as 10nm. With the EFM one can monitor the charge of a single electron. Prof. Paul Hansma at Santa Barbara opened the door even wider when he was able to image biological objects in aqueous environments. At this point the sluice gates were opened and a multitude of different instruments appeared. There are signi?cant differences between the Scanning Probe Microscopes or SPM, and others such as the Scanning Electron Microscope or SEM. The probe microscopes do not require preparation of the sample and they operate in ambient atmosphere, whereas, the SEM must operate in a vacuum environment and the sample must be cross-sectioned to expose the proper surface. However, the SEM can record 3D image and movies, features that are not available with the scanning probes.

Book excerpt: This volume compiles and discusses the fundamental and multidisciplinary knowledge on adsorption and separation processes using zeolites as adsorbents. Over the last decade, a large amount of research has been carried out for the development of zeolites as adsorbents. However, there is still a growing interest to increase the understanding of such selective adsorbents. Therefore, synthesis strategies and new approaches for developing new selective zeolite adsorbents for gas separation are presented in the first chapter. In addition, a chapter focused on adsorption characterization techniques of microporous materials is included. This will be helpful for advanced readers, since the new IUPAC recommendations for microporous characterization are not still widely employed by the zeolite community. Experimental and theoretical aspects of economically and environmentally relevant separations, which have been successfully carried out with zeolites, are discussed in detail in subsequent chapters. Finally, industrial zeolite based adsorption and separation processes as well as current perspectives for new zeolite based separations, and improvements of current technologies are presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An insightful analysis of confined chemical systems for theoretical and experimental scientists Chemical Reactivity in Confined Systems: Theory and Applications presents a theoretical basis for the molecular phenomena observed in confined spaces. The book highlights state-of-the-art theoretical and computational approaches, with a focus on obtaining physically relevant clarification of the subject to enable the reader to build an appreciation of underlying chemical principles. The book includes real-world examples of confined systems that highlight how the reactivity of atoms and molecules change upon encapsulation. Chapters include discussions on recent developments related to several host-guest systems, including cucurbit[n]uril, ExBox+4, clathrate hydrates, octa acid cavitand, metal organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), zeolites, fullerenes, and carbon nanotubes. Readers will learn how to carry out new calculations to understand the physicochemical behavior of confined quantum systems. Topics covered include: A thorough introduction to global reactivity descriptors, including electronegativity, hardness, and electrophilicity An exploration of the Fukui function, as well as dual descriptors, higher order derivatives, and reactivity through information theory A practical discussion of spin dependent reactivity and temperature dependent reactivity Concise treatments of population analysis, reaction force, electron localization functions, and the solvent effect on reactivity Perfect for academic researchers and graduate students in theoretical and computational chemistry and confined chemical systems, Chemical Reactivity in Confined Systems: Theory and Applications will also earn a place in the libraries of professionals working in the areas of catalysis, supramolecular chemistry, and porous materials.

Book excerpt: This second volume of the book on spin dynamics in confined magnetic structures covers central aspects of spin dynamic phenomena, so that researchers can find a comprehensive compilation of the current work in the field. Introductory chapters help newcomers to understand the basic concepts, and the more advanced chapters give the current state of the art for most spin dynamic issues in the milliseconds to femtoseconds range. Both experimental techniques and theoretical work are discussed. The comprehensive presentation of these developments makes this volume very timely and valuable for every researcher working in the field of magnetism. It describes the new experimental techniques which have advanced this field very rapidly. Among the techniques covered, particular attention is given to those involving high temporal, elemental and spatial resolution as well as to techniques involving magnetic field pulses with very short rise times and durations.
