Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this title, the authors leap into a novel paradigm of scalability and cost-effectiveness, on the basis of resource reuse. In a world with much abundance of wirelessly accessible devices, WSN deployments should capitalize on the resources already available in the region of deployment, and only augment it with the components required to meet new application requirements. However, if the required resources already exist in that region, WSN deployment converges to an assignment and scheduling scheme to accommodate for the new application given the existing resources. Such resources are polled from many fields, including multiple WSNs already in the field, static networks (WiFi, WiMAX, cellular, etc) in addition to municipal, industrial and mobile resources. The architecture, framework and pricing policy, as well as approaches for backward compatibility with existing deployments, are presented in this book. We elaborate on the formalization of the problem, and contrast with existing work on coverage. This paradigm adopts optimal assignments in WSNs and exploits dynamic re-programming for boosting post-deployment and backward compatible protocols.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Computer Science - Internet, New Technologies, grade: 8.12, , course: M. Tech, language: English, abstract: Wireless sensor network (WSN) is an emerging imperious leading technology of the current century that presents great promise for various pioneering applications. The use of sensor networks should keep developing, mainly in the fields of scientific, logistic, healthcare and military applications. Sensor networks interact and collect sensitive data and operate in unattended hostile environments, thus it is imperative to pay attention to the security of wireless sensor networks as they are highly prone to threats. For successful operation of the nodes, it is important to maintain the security and privacy of the transmitted data as well as the data stored at nodes. The different security protocols and models used in the wired and other wireless networks such as ad-hoc networks cannot be used in WSNs because the sensor size poses significant restrictions, mainly in terms of energy autonomy and node lifetime, as the batteries have to be too tiny. Also, the existing security protocols in these constrained networks are not sufficiently energy efficient, which is the real motivation behind this work. In this thesis, a light-weight dynamic security algorithm titled “An Energy Efficient and Dynamic Security Protocol (EEDSP)” for wireless sensor networks has been proposed and implemented at nodal level. We also implement an existing algorithm and then carry out the performance analysis of both the algorithms in terms of energy consumptions, node lifetime and memory requirements at source and intermediate nodes to verify the improvement in our protocol’s results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic power management is a design methodology aiming at controlling performance and power levels of digital circuits and systems, with the goal of extending the autonomous operation time of battery-powered systems, providing graceful performance degradation when supply energy is limited, and adapting power dissipation to satisfy environmental constraints. Dynamic Power Management: Design Techniques and CAD Tools addresses design techniques and computer-aided design solutions for power management. Different approaches are presented and organized in an order related to their applicability to control-units, macro-blocks, digital circuits and electronic systems, respectively. All approaches are based on the principle of exploiting idleness of circuits, systems, or portions thereof. They involve both the detection of idleness conditions and the freezing of power-consuming activities in the idle components. The book also describes some approaches to system-level power management, including Microsoft's OnNow architecture and the `Advanced Configuration and Power Management' standard proposed by Intel, Microsoft and Toshiba. These approaches migrate power management to the software layer running on hardware platforms, thus providing a flexible and self-configurable solution to adapting the power/performance tradeoff to the needs of mobile (and fixed) computing and communication. Dynamic Power Management: Design Techniques and CAD Tools is of interest to researchers and developers of computer-aided design tools for integrated circuits and systems, as well as to system designers.

Book excerpt: Document from the year 2019 in the subject Computer Science - Internet, New Technologies, , course: Wireless Sensor Networks, Home Area Networks, language: English, abstract: The objectives of this research are: To propose a scheme to estimate the future interference and enable efficient channel switching mechanism to avoid interference for Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) as per the latency requirements specified by Smart Grid (SG). To propose an algorithm for efficient data recovery mechanism so that ZigBee devices can quickly familiarize with the encoding according to the highly dynamic WiFi traffic. To propose an efficient frequency shifting mechanism for different frame sizes of data under interference conditions to guarantee the reliable data transmission within the delay requirements of the SG. To propose an effective mechanism to guarantee the ZigBee communications within the maximum tolerable delay under the coexistence of WiFi for carrying out effective smart home solutions. To propose an algorithm based on effective transmission power control to increase WSN life time under coexistence scenarios for efficient monitoring and controlling purposes at smart homes. With the introduction of Information and Data-Communication Technology (ICT) to the present electrical power systems, the traditional electrical-grid system is becoming more intelligent and adaptive. The ICT successfully establishes bi-directional communication between Utility companies and the consumer for improving the generation and utilization of power. Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is efficiently utilized by wide-ranging Smart Grid (SG) applications. Despite many advantages, WSN faces a challenge of avoiding interference experiencing from other coexisting wireless technologies working in the 2.4GHz unlicensed frequency band. Providing support for WSN in terms of avoiding interference is a very challenging issue due to the dynamic wireless communication environment and extremely limited resources. In the present thesis, the problem of interference experienced by WSN in 2.4GHz has been investigated. The challenges, limitations and requirements for avoiding the interference for WSN working in the vicinity of other technologies like WiFi and Bluetooth have been identified. As a result of the literature survey carried out, it was identified that proper channel se-lection and channel prioritization for WSNs working in the coexisting environment had not been adequately developed till then. Hence, there was a requirement for addressing these issues. The proposed schemes in this thesis are based on simulation results obtained.

Book excerpt: Growing demand for the wireless sensor network has made it a hot research area and a new technology trend. Since sensor network technology can adapt to its environment, draw conclusions and learn from it, it makes more strategic use of the application environment in an efficient manner. It has now become widely available to deliver various advantages, from convenience, security, efficiency to time and money savings. Studies show that in the near future, wireless sensor networks will become more of an essential part of our lives than our actual personal computer. It is changing the face of the world altogether. The wireless sensor network base station, which acts as a processing unit and gateway for all sensor data, is believed to be free from security threats. Unattended wireless sensor networks, however, should treat security as a primary concern, because it collects and processes sensitive data within networks. When the base station is compromised, the sensors connected to it are at risk and communications in the network are adversely affected. Significant security concerns surrounding these specifications include threats such as eavesdropping, data falsification, denial of service and disruption of physical nodes. The proposed SEA (Security, Efficiency and Availability) framework is motivated from highly secure and scalable distributed ledger technology called Radix. The framework is designed to meet wireless sensor network security requirements using minimum replication and various key techniques. It promotes the use of public key cryptography among base stations to securely distribute keys, data, commitments and clocks. The proposed replication allows the network to continue functioning without data loss and ensures the availability of the network. In addition, it can withstand vulnerabilities, such as man-in-the-middle and replay attacks. The proposed memory management scheme is validated in terms of memory storage and secure communication configuration. The security of message exchange in this framework is evaluated using Scyther protocol analyzer. The research findings exhibit that the solution proposed ensures security, efficiency, and availability of dynamic wireless sensor networks.

This forces to be able to establish energy efficient communications (and never the less low-delay) within highly dynamic networks. We focused on improving the medium access control (MAC) to optimize the management of wireless communications, the main source of energy consumption in these networks. This thesis discusses the self-adaptation of asynchronous MAC solutions and shows that a localized cooperation between communicating objects can maintain an efficient sharing of the communication resource in highly dynamic networks (traffic, mobility, failures). In addition to a reasoning on the tools of simulation and experimentation, we conducted comprehensive evaluation campaigns of our contributions that address traffic changes and mobility in dense networks.
