Book excerpt: The dynamic fracture toughness of a reactor pressure vessel steel was investigated using small specimens. Precracked Charpy-size SE(B) specimens and circumferentially cracked round bars (CRB) loaded in tension were used to investigate the dynamic fracture toughness of an A533, Gr. B steel plate within the ductile-brittle transition region. The specimens used in this investigation were removed from the broken halves of conventional 4T C(T) specimens that had been utilized in a previous investigation of the dynamic fracture toughness of this material. Crack-tip loading rates in excess of 104 MPa-m1/2/s were achieved in the current tests. Multiple specimens were tested at each temperature in order to permit the determination of the reference temperature, T0. A fracture toughness scaling model for the circumferentially cracked round bar developed by Sciabetta was used to account for the loss of constraint in this specimen. A master curve approach was used to characterize the dynamic toughness in the ductile-brittle region. The shift in transition temperature was compared to a model for the strain rate dependence of T0 developed by Wallin. The shift in transition temperature of the CRB specimen was accurately predicted by the model. The CRB specimen and the dynamic SE(B) specimens gave good results considering the material inhomogeneity typical of the plate tested.

Book excerpt: The master-curve (MC) enables fracture toughness to be measured in the ductile-to-brittle temperature (DBT) regime of ferritic steels using small specimens. However, MC application to structural components remains unclear in some areas. Vital issues of regulatory concern are the differences in the reference temperature T0 obtained from specimens of different sizes and shapes, the extension of the MC into the upper transition range, and the acceptability, or not, of a given level of failure probability to be used in the analysis of safety-relevant components [e.g., nuclear power reactor pressure vessel (RPV)]. Based on general theoretical considerations, the existence of a deterministic temperature-dependent lower bound of KIc or KJc is postulated. It can serve to provide conservative fracture toughness values as required in a screening analysis, which is usually the first step of a fracture mechanics analysis of a structural component. A simple method to determine this lower bound from the reference temperature T0 is presented. Furthermore, since testing of small specimens, like in precracked Charpy (PCC) tests, often leads to E1921-invalid data, an alternative procedure to estimate the MC is suggested that can use the invalid data. The practicability of the method is shown by a few examples. Based on the same method, a lower-bound of dynamic fracture toughness can be estimated from Charpy data sets. Combined with an empirical temperature shift, the lower bound of static fracture toughness can be estimated as well.

Book excerpt: The knowledge of dynamic mechanical properties is useful in all cases where the strain rate sensitivity of metallic materials is an issue, and whenever the actual loading conditions for a structure (either in normal operation or under accidental circumstances) are different from static. Furthermore, in some investigations, increasing the loading rate in a mechanical test is used to simulate other embrittling mechanisms such as thermal aging or neutron exposure. Precracked Charpy-type (PCVN) specimens, tested under impact loading rates using an instrumented pendulum, have been used for more than 30 years to measure dynamic fracture toughness; the experimental procedure and the analysis methodology are fairly well established, despite the lack of an ASTM or ISO official test standard. This paper addresses the applicability of fatigue precracked miniature Charpy specimens of KLST type (PKLST-B = 3 mm, W = 4 mm and L = 27 mm) for impact toughness measurements in the ductile-to-brittle transition regime and in fully ductile (upper shelf) conditions. In the transition region, tests have been analyzed using the Master Curve approach; the multiple-specimen (low-blow) method has been applied in the upper shelf regime. A well-known and fully characterized reactor pressure vessel steel of the A533B Cl.1 type (JRQ) has been used; the results obtained have been compared with data previously obtained from standard-size precracked Charpy specimens. It has been found that under impact loading conditions PKLST specimens suffer significant loss of constraint when compared to conventional precracked Charpy V-notch samples, in both transition and upper shelf conditions.

Book excerpt: The primary objective of this study was to demonstrate the applicability of a J-based approach to fracture characterization of ductile alloys subjected to dynamic loading. Three-point-bend [SE(B)] fracture specimens of a high-strength steel were subjected to impact loading in a drop tower, and appropriate strains and displacements were measured to allow estimation of J. A finite element analysis of these experiments was conducted to evaluate the applicability of a J-based fracture characterization scheme and to provide guidance for the experimental measurements. The concept of a transition time was introduced to provide an estimate of the time during which the controlling crack-tip field [Hutchinson-Rice-Rosengren (HRR) field] stabilizes. The paper demonstrates that for fracture times greater than the transition time, J can be accurately evaluated by the quasi-static deep-crack formulation. For the case of the steel SE(B) specimen geometry used for this study, the transition time was approximately 300 s. The finite-element analysis indicated that the net moment carried by the remaining ligament of the specimen could be evaluated by measurements of the flexural and stresses at the quarter-span position on the SE(B) specimen. This was verified experimentally in drop tower experiments utilizing strain gages at the quarter-span position. These results were found to compare well with a load estimation scheme based on a full bridge of strain gages attached to the tension and compression surfaces of the SE(B) specimen. The load accuracy obtained using the full bridge was also found to be insensitive to crack extension and plasticity at the crack tip. Methods of determining the crack initiation point in these dynamic experiments were evaluated. It was found that the double capacitance crack-opening displacement (COD) gage used in the experiments provides an accurate estimate of the crack initiation point.
