Book Synopsis Teleology, First Principles, and Scientific Method in Aristotle's Biology by : Allan Gotthelf
Download or read book Teleology, First Principles, and Scientific Method in Aristotle's Biology written by Allan Gotthelf and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-02-23 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents an interconnected set of sixteen essays, four of which are previously unpublished, by Allan Gotthelf—one of the leading experts in the study of Aristotle's biological writings. Gotthelf addresses three main topics across Aristotle's three main biological treatises. Starting with his own ground-breaking study of Aristotle's natural teleology and its illuminating relationship with the Generation of Animals, Gotthelf proceeds to the axiomatic structure of biological explanation (and the first principles such explanation proceeds from) in the Parts of Animals. After an exploration of the implications of these two treatises for our understanding of Aristotle's metaphysics, Gotthelf examines important aspects of the method by which Aristotle organizes his data in the History of Animals to make possible such a systematic, explanatory study of animals, offering a new view of the place of classification in that enterprise. In a concluding section on 'Aristotle as Theoretical Biologist', Gotthelf explores the basis of Charles Darwin's great praise of Aristotle and, in the first printing of a lecture delivered worldwide, provides an overview of Aristotle as a philosophically-oriented scientist, and 'a proper verdict' on his greatness as scientist.
Book Synopsis Data in Medicine: Collection, Processing and Presentation by : Robert S. Reneman
Download or read book Data in Medicine: Collection, Processing and Presentation written by Robert S. Reneman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowadays clinical medicine is to a great extent dependent on techniques and instrumentation. Not infrequently, instrumentation is so complicated that technical specialists are required to perform the measurements and to process the data. Interpretation of the results, however, generally has to be done by physicians. For proper interpretation of data and good com munication with technical specialists, knowledge of, among other things, principle, advantages, limitations and applicability of the used techniques is necessary. Besides, this knowledge is required for critical comparison of systems to measure a certain variable. Critical evaluation as well as com parison of techniques and instruments ought to be an essential component of medical practice. In general, basic techniques and instrumentation are not taught in medi cal schools nor during residencies. Therefore, physicians themselves have to collect practical information about principle, advantages and limitations of techniques and instruments when using them in clinical medicine. This practical information, focussed on the specific techniques used in the various disciplines, is usually difficult to obtain from handbooks and manufacturers' manuals. Hence a new series of books is started on instru mentation and techniques in clinical medicine.
Book Synopsis Pharmacology and Pharmacokinetics by : T. Teorell
Download or read book Pharmacology and Pharmacokinetics written by T. Teorell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of papers by leading pharmacokineticists and pharmacolo gists is the proceedings of a conference held at the John E. · Fogarty International Center for Advanced Study in the Health Sciences, National Institutes of Health, October 30 to November 1, 1972. As part of its advanced study program, the Center conducts workshops, seminars, and conferences on topics related to the biomedical interests of the Scholars-in Residence. Professor Torsten Teorell came to the Center in 1970 as one of the first Scholars. In 1971 and 1972, he spent several months at the Center devoting his attention to contemporary problems in the application of pharmacoki netics to experimental and clinical pharmacology. As one of the founders of pharmacokinetics, Professor Teorell has made many contributions to the field since he first presented a formal multicompartment model for the analysis of drug action and drug metabolism in 1937 (Teorell, 1937). Since the appearance of his original paper, pharmacodynamics, or pharmacoki netics, has become increasingly important as a tool for the study of drug action in patients. The translation of experimental pharmacological findings into therapeutic regimens is today increasingly dependent on ade qua te models of drug action. The purpose of the conference, of which this book is the proceedings, was to discuss contemporary findings in this important biomedical research field. The conference program was designed by Professor Teorell with the help of a small committee which included Drs. Edward R.
