Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of initial stress and in particular of thermal stress on the dynamical behavior of thin shells (vibration and propagation of bending waves) is studied. The case of a circular cylindrical is considered in detail, and several effects of initial stress and distributed moment evaluated. Methods of determining initial thermal stress and deflection are given and their effects on natural frequencies and modes considered. Local effects on the velocity of propagation of bending waves are studied in detail and quantitative evaluations are obtained. Comparison with experimental results is given. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is devoted to nonlinear dynamics of thin plates and shells with thermosensitive excitation. Because of the variety of sizes and types of mathematical models in current use, there is no prospect of solving them analytically. However, the book emphasizes a rigorous mathematical treatment of the obtained differential equations, since it helps efficiently in further developing of various suitable numerical algorithms to solve the stated problems.

Book excerpt: Thermal Stress Analysis of Composite Beams, Plates and Shells: Computational Modelling and Applications presents classic and advanced thermal stress topics in a cutting-edge review of this critical area, tackling subjects that have little coverage in existing resources. It includes discussions of complex problems, such as multi-layered cases using modern advanced computational and vibrational methods. Authors Carrera and Fazzolari begin with a review of the fundamentals of thermoelasticity and thermal stress analysis relating to advanced structures and the basic mechanics of beams, plates, and shells, making the book a self-contained reference. More challenging topics are then addressed, including anisotropic thermal stress structures, static and dynamic responses of coupled and uncoupled thermoelastic problems, thermal buckling, and post-buckling behavior of thermally loaded structures, and thermal effects on panel flutter phenomena, amongst others. Provides an overview of critical thermal stress theory and its relation to beams, plates, and shells, from classical concepts to the latest advanced theories Appeals to those studying thermoelasticity, thermoelastics, stress analysis, multilayered structures, computational methods, buckling, static response, and dynamic response Includes the authors' unified formulation (UF) theory, along with cutting-edge topics that receive little coverage in other references Covers metallic and composite structures, including a complete analysis and sample problems of layered structures, considering both mesh and meshless methods Presents a valuable resource for those working on thermal stress problems in mechanical, civil, and aerospace engineering settings

Book excerpt: Recent analytical and experimental research activities in the area of dynamic behavior of thin elastic shells at the Structural Mechanics Laboratory of Northwestern University are reviewed. These activities fall within the following three groups: analytical and experimental studies of frequency spectra and mode shapes of cylindrical shells subjected to initial mechanical stresses and non-uniform heating; analytical and experimental studies of impact loading of cylindrical shells and rings; and dynamic interaction of cylindrical shells and a surrounding fluid. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study is made of the transient response of a nonshallow spherical shell insulated at its inner surface and subjected to a suddenly applied, and subsequently constant, heat flux over its outer surface. The shell is assumed to be closed at its apex and either clamped or simply supported at its edge. Also considered is the transient response of such a shell to step changes of pressure parallel and/or perpendicular to its surface. The primary goal of the investigation is the evaluation of the effect of inertia in transient thermal stress problems involving thin shells. Heretofore, such problems have been handled by means of a quasi-static formulation in which the inertia of the shell was ignored and time entered only as a parameter from the transient temperature distribution. This becomes a special case of the present, more general, solution. Since the determination of the response of the shell to a transient mechanical load is another special case of the analysis this too will be presented. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report is concerned with thermal stress in an open, circular cylindrical shell with a circular hole. The shell is subjected to a stationary uniform heat flow and the condition that thermal insulation exists at the boundary of the hole. The stresses and deformation of the shell under the prescribed conditions are analyzed. The analysis is based on the method of superposition. The actual stresses in the shell may be considered as the sum of the following three parts: (a) stresses caused by the given heat flow in a similar shell without hole, (b) stresses in the shell caused by edge loads at the boundary of the hole and (c) stresses in the shell caused by the local disturbance of the heat flow near the hole. A method of obtaining numerical results is also outlined. (Author).

Book excerpt: This is the fourth volume of the handbook Thermal Stresses. Following the principles established when the first volume was published in 1986, the fourth volume consists of six separate chapters prepared by specialists in the field. Each chapter is devoted to a different topic in the area of Thermal Stresses. Many results have been published for the first time in Thermal Stresses IV. The exposition of the material is on the state-of-the art level, which should be appropriate for graduate students, researchers, and engineers specializing in the field of stress analysis. In most cases the material is presented with some historical perspective. A large number of references provided will allow the readers to augment their knowledge, after studying a particular chapter.
