Book excerpt: The effect of initial stress and in particular of thermal stress on the dynamical behavior of thin shells (vibration and propagation of bending waves) is studied. The case of a circular cylindrical is considered in detail, and several effects of initial stress and distributed moment evaluated. Methods of determining initial thermal stress and deflection are given and their effects on natural frequencies and modes considered. Local effects on the velocity of propagation of bending waves are studied in detail and quantitative evaluations are obtained. Comparison with experimental results is given. (Author).

Book excerpt: Recent analytical and experimental research activities in the area of dynamic behavior of thin elastic shells at the Structural Mechanics Laboratory of Northwestern University are reviewed. These activities fall within the following three groups: analytical and experimental studies of frequency spectra and mode shapes of cylindrical shells subjected to initial mechanical stresses and non-uniform heating; analytical and experimental studies of impact loading of cylindrical shells and rings; and dynamic interaction of cylindrical shells and a surrounding fluid. Book excerpt: The equations of motion for large deformation of a thin elastic cyl ndrical shell are derived and simplified to a form second order theory which is adequate for investigating the dynamic stability of the shell. A review of linear vibrations is presented. The response of a cylindrical shell to a uniform impulsive pressure is investigated. It is found that the circular mode of vibration, which is the basic response of the shell, may be unstable, the shell going over into bending modes of vibration. A criterion is established for predicting the bending modes excited. It is shown that the type of instability involved corresponds to what is known as autoparametric excitation in non-linear oscillations. Uniform impulsive pressure of sufficient magnitude to cause inward plastic flow is considered. The analysis is carried out for a stress-strain relation which includes purely viscous, viscoplastic, and linear strain hardening materials as special cases. It is shown that a series of wrinkles develop around the circumference as the shell flows inward. The wrinkling arises from magnification of the irregularities in the initial radial velocity due to the compressive membrane force in the shell. (Author).

Book excerpt: This monograph is devoted to nonlinear dynamics of thin plates and shells with thermosensitive excitation. Because of the variety of sizes and types of mathematical models in current use, there is no prospect of solving them analytically. However, the book emphasizes a rigorous mathematical treatment of the obtained differential equations, since it helps efficiently in further developing of various suitable numerical algorithms to solve the stated problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigations dealing with the buckling of thin cylindrical and conical shells subject to axial impact are described. The studies consisted of experimental and theoretical efforts directed toward obtaing a qualitative and quantitative understanding of the dynamic buckling behavior of such shells under a variety of conditions. The conditions studied include different longitudinal conditions imposed on the impacted end of the shell and internal pressurization. In addition, methods of increasing the specific energy dissipation capacity of shells subject to axial impact were studied. A number of interesting results were obtained. It was demonstrated experimentally that buckling of a cylindrical shell is initiated during the first passage of the axial compression stress wave due to the initial impact when the impact velocity is sufficiently high. Another significant experimental result obtained is that the asymmetrical (quasi-developable) form of shell buckling occurs as a result of a smooth transition from the symmetrical ("ring") form of bucklingin some thin cylindrical shells subjected to an axially symmetric axial impact. Analytical subject to a constant velocity end displacement. The method utilizes the finite deflection theory and is a refinement of the procedure due to A.S. Volmir. It shows that both the upper critical stress and the number of circumferential waves increase and the time to initiate buckling decreases with increasing velocity of impact. These trends are in agreement with the analytical results of Volmir and a phenomenological theory due to Coppa.

Book excerpt: There are numerous engineering applications for high-speed rotating structures which rotate about their symmetric axes. For example, free-flight sub-munition projectiles rotate at high speeds in order to achieve an aerodynamically-stable flight. This is the first book of its kind to provide a comprehensive and systematic description of rotating shell dynamics. It not only provides the basic derivation of the dynamic governing equations for rotating shells, but documents benchmark results for free vibration, critical speed and parametric resonance. It is written in a simple and clear manner making it accessible both the expert and graduate student. The first monograph to provide a detailed description of rotating shell dynamics Dynamic problems such as free vibration and dynamic stability are examined in detail, for basic shells of revolutions

Book excerpt: A general bending theory of circular cylindrical shells under the influence of initial stress, established recently by the authors, is employed in re-examining the buckling of such shells under external pressure, and the results are compared to those of previous investigations. Simple but accurate expressions for the buckling pressure applicable to a wide range of shell dimensions are presented. (Author).
