Book excerpt: Any 160-meter enthusiast will tell you that operating on Topband, as it is called, is challenging, exciting and intriguing. Author Jeff Briggs, K1ZM, well known as a Topband expert, has compiled a book that will appeal to diehard 160-meter operators as well as those who have always wondered what goes on down there on the frequency spectrum. Indeed, the 160-meter aficionado is a special breed of operator. How do you know when you're a True-Blue 160-meter fan? One clue might be that you're finding yourself actually enjoying listening to static crashes... And you suspect you're on the edge when you wake up just before dawn for three months, just trying to make that seemingly impossible Topband DX QSO with Hong Kong or maybe Bangladesh! K1ZM has written this book as a fond dedication to one of the true pioneers on 160 meters, Stew Perry, W1BB, who is lovingly remembered by many people still on the air. DXing on the Edge chronicles W1BB's many accomplishments on Topband, plus those of numerous other early operators. Aside from detailed historical information, the author describes many practical antennas and operating techniques that can lead to success on 160. Like most of the ham bands, hearing the DX is the most challenging part of operating-and hearing well on Topband requires superior receiving antennas. Successful DXing can be accomplished even from a city lot, however, and the book includes lots of neat tricks and hints that will help you work the rare ones.

Book excerpt: AVO (SEG Investigations in Geophysics No. 16) by Satinder Chopra and John Castagna begins with a brief discussion on the basics of seismic-wave propagation as it relates to AVO, followed by a discussion of the rock-physics foundation for AVO analysis including the use of Gassmann’s equations and fluid substitution. Then, the early seismic observations and how they led to the birth of AVO analysis are presented. The various approximations for the Zoeppritz equations are examined, and the assumptions and limitations of each approximation are clearly identified. A section on the factors that affect seismic amplitudes and a discussion of the processing considerations important for AVO analysis are included. A subsequent section explores the various techniques used in AVO interpretation. Finally, topics including the influence of anisotropy in AVO analysis, the use of AVO inversion, estimation of uncertainty in AVO analysis, converted-wave AVO, and the future of the AVO method are discussed. Equally helpful to new entrants into the field as well as to seasoned workers, AVO will provide readers with the most up-to-date knowledge on amplitude variation with offset.

Book excerpt: This innovative approach to teaching Java language and programming uses game design development as the method to applying concepts. Instead of teaching game design using Java, projects are designed to teach Java in a problem-solving approach that is both a fun and effective. Learning Java with Games introduces the concepts of Java and coding; then uses a project to emphasize those ideas. It does not treat the object-oriented and procedure and loop parts of Java as two separate entities to be covered separately, but interweaves the two concepts so the students get a better picture of what Java is. After studying a rich set of projects, the book turns to build up a “Three-layer Structure for Games” as an architecture template and a guiding line for designing and developing video games. The proposed three-layer architecture not only merges essential Java object-oriented features but also addresses loosely coupled software architecture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today complex numbers have such widespread practical use--from electrical engineering to aeronautics--that few people would expect the story behind their derivation to be filled with adventure and enigma. In An Imaginary Tale, Paul Nahin tells the 2000-year-old history of one of mathematics' most elusive numbers, the square root of minus one, also known as i. He recreates the baffling mathematical problems that conjured it up, and the colorful characters who tried to solve them. In 1878, when two brothers stole a mathematical papyrus from the ancient Egyptian burial site in the Valley of Kings, they led scholars to the earliest known occurrence of the square root of a negative number. The papyrus offered a specific numerical example of how to calculate the volume of a truncated square pyramid, which implied the need for i. In the first century, the mathematician-engineer Heron of Alexandria encountered I in a separate project, but fudged the arithmetic; medieval mathematicians stumbled upon the concept while grappling with the meaning of negative numbers, but dismissed their square roots as nonsense. By the time of Descartes, a theoretical use for these elusive square roots--now called "imaginary numbers"--was suspected, but efforts to solve them led to intense, bitter debates. The notorious i finally won acceptance and was put to use in complex analysis and theoretical physics in Napoleonic times. Addressing readers with both a general and scholarly interest in mathematics, Nahin weaves into this narrative entertaining historical facts and mathematical discussions, including the application of complex numbers and functions to important problems, such as Kepler's laws of planetary motion and ac electrical circuits. This book can be read as an engaging history, almost a biography, of one of the most evasive and pervasive "numbers" in all of mathematics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook deals with the fundamental principles of fluid dynamics, heat and mass transfer. The basic equations governing the convective transfer by fluid motion of matter, energy and momentum, and the transfer of the same properties by diffusion of molecular motion, are presented at the outset. These concepts are then applied systematically to the study of fluid dynamics in an engineering context and to the parallel investigation of heat and mass transfer processes. The influence of viscosity and the dominant role of turbulence in fluid motion are emphasised. Individual chapters are concerned with the important subjects of boundary layers, flow in pipes and ducts, gas dynamics, and flow in turbo-machinery and of a liquid with a free surface. Later chapters cover some of the special types of flow and transfer process encountered in chemical engineering applications, including two-phase flow, condensation, evaporation, flow in packed beds and fluidized solids.

Book excerpt: The field of computer vision combines techniques from physics, mathematics, psychology, artificial intelligence, and computer science to examine how machines might construct meaningful descriptions of their surrounding environment. The editors of this volume, prominent researchers and leaders of the SRI International AI Center Perception Group, have selected sixty papers, most published since 1980, with the viewpoint that computer vision is concerned with solving seven basic problems: - Reconstructing 3D scenes from 2D images - Decomposing images into their component parts - Recognizing and assigning labels to scene objects - Deducing and describing relations among scene objects - Determining the nature of computer architectures that can support the visual function - Representing abstractions in the world of computer memory - Matching stored descriptions to image representation Each chapter of this volume addresses one of these problems through an introductory discussion, which identifies major ideas and summarizes approaches, and through reprints of key research papers. Two appendices on crucial assumptions in image interpretation and on parallel architectures for vision applications, a glossary of technical terms, and a comprehensive bibliography and index complete the volume.

Book excerpt: This book offers a unified presentation of the concepts and most of the practicable principles common to all branches of solid and fluid should be appealing to advanced undergraduate mechanics. Its design students in engineering science and should also enhance the insight of both graduate students and practitioners. A profound knowledge of applied mechanics as understood in this book may help to cultivate the versatility that the engineering community must possess in this modern world of high-technology. This book is, in fact, a reviewed and extensively improved second edition, but it can also be regarded as the first edition in English, translated by the author himself from the original German version, "Technische Mechanik der festen und flOssigen Korper," published by Springer-Verlag, Wien, in 1985. Although this book grew out of lecture notes for a three semester course for advanced undergraduate students taught by the author and several colleagues during the past 20 years, it contains sufficient material for a subsequent two-semester graduate course. The only prerequisites are basic algebra and analysis as usually taught in the first year of an undergraduate engineering curriculum. Advanced mathematics as it is required in the progress of mechanics teaching may be taught in parallel classes, but also an introduction into the art of design should be offered at that stage.
