Book excerpt: An online survey was conducted by Quora in which subjects of all ages were asked, “What is the need for and purpose of marriage?” Out of the 100 people surveyed, very few of them could offer a solid answer. Unfortunately, it speaks to our current conundrum as it concerns marriage; people are going to the altar to get married although they lack a biblical understanding of the the rules that govern it. In Dwelling Together, Shelton and Myshica candidly debunk some of the myths surrounding marriage with refreshing openness. They discuss their own marriage – the joys, the sadness, and the lessons they’ve learned along the way. They lightheartedly share the cold hard facts and insights they’ve gained from each challenge they’ve faced together. Shelton and Myshica masterfully provide a balance between the male and female perspective to help couples Dwell Together in love, peace, and passion.

Book excerpt: Although primogeniture is commonly assumed to have prevailed throughout the world and firstborns are regarded as most likely to achieve success, many of the most prominent figures in biblical literature are younger offspring, including Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Samuel, David, and Solomon. Central to the plot of most biblical stories, the sibling relationships depicted are rarely harmonious, and the surprising preference for younger siblings is an intriguing and unexplained pattern. Using evidence from a wide range of disciplines. Frederick E. Greenspahn presents a seminal interpretation of this phenomenon. In this study, he demonstrates that ancient Israelite fathers were in fact free to choose their primary heirs. The Bible's propensity for younger offspring, Greenspahn shows, reflects neither a legally mandated norm nor a protest against the prevailing custom, but rather conforms to a widespread folk motif, evoking innocence, vulnerability, and destiny. Within the biblical context, this theme heightens God's role in supporting ostensibly unlikely heroes. Drawing on the resources of law, anthropology, folklore, and linguistics, Greenspahn shows how, in portraying younger siblings triumphing over older ones, these tales serve as complex parables of God's relationship to his chosen people, and reflect Israel's own discomfort with the contradiction between its theology of election and the reality of political weakness.

Book excerpt: Through a transdisciplinary perspective, this book examines the complex urban dimension, in front of increasing density, soil consumption, abandoned places, and the recent pandemic which proved megacities particularly inadequate to provide healthy psychophysical conditions. Assuming bodily and emotional comfort as a reference horizon, it tends to inspire the design research overcoming a paradoxical binary logic that separates public and private, outside and inside, culture and nature, mind and places. The first part of the work explores built spaces and addresses sustainable strategies not only to overcome an ecologic and systemic crisis but also to improve places liveability in our contemporary city. The second part deals with our perception of aesthetic spaces, welcoming the stimuli coming from neuro-aesthetics studies on affordances and atmosphere and encouraging the intersection between interior architecture and design culture and arts. The third part examines relational spaces and how they influence human behaviour, starting from psychological, anthropological, and philosophical perspectives. The book benefits scholars and practitioners interested in interior architecture and design, as well as researchers involved in the relationship between people and places. The new challenge posed by the recent pandemic requires more than ever to rely on consciousness, culture and creativity to increase the intelligence of our surroundings, allowing our sense of belonging and improving our personal and mutual well-being.
