Book Synopsis Flemish and Dutch Artists in Early Modern England by : MaryBryanH. Curd
Download or read book Flemish and Dutch Artists in Early Modern England written by MaryBryanH. Curd and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By examining their production practices in a variety of genres?including manuscript illustration, glass painting and staining, tapestry manufacture, portrait painting, and engraving?this book explores how Netherlandish artists migrating to England in the early modern period overcame difficulties raised by their outsider status. This study examines, for the first time in this context, the challenges of alien status to artistic production and the effectiveness of cooperation as a countermeasure. The author demonstrates that collaboration was chief among the strategies that these foreigners chose to secure a position in London's changing art market. Curd's exploration of these collaborations primarily follows Pierre Bourdieu's model of "establishment and challenger" in which dominance in a field of cultural production depends upon how much cultural, political, and economic capital can be accumulated and the effectiveness of the strategies used to confront competition. The analysis presented here challenges received opinion that a collaborative work is only a joint effort of artists working together on a single monument by demonstrating that the participation of patrons and middlemen can also shape the final appearance of a work of art. Furthermore, this book shows that the strategic use of collaboration served the goal of competition by helping to establish foreign artists in the London art market and suggests that their coping strategies have implications for the study of immigrant behaviors today.

This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 599 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the tremendous number of studies produced annually in the field of Dutch art over the last 30 years or so, and the strong contemporary market for works by Dutch masters of the period as well as the public's ongoing fascination with some of its most beloved painters, until now there has been no comprehensive study assessing the state of research in the field. As the first study of its kind, this book is a useful resource for scholars and advanced students of seventeenth-century Dutch art, and also serves as a springboard for further research. Its 19 chapters, divided into three sections and written by a team of internationally renowned art historians, address a wide variety of topics, ranging from those that might be considered "traditional" to others that have only drawn scholarly attention comparatively recently.

This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of Drawings by Dutch and Flemish Artists, Vol. 5: Preserved in the Departments of Prints and Drawings in the British Museum; Dutch and Flemish Drawings of the XV and XVI Centuries The fifth and final volume of the Catalogue of Drawings by Artists of the Netherlands, entirely written by Mr. A. E. Popham, completes a work of which the first four volumes are from the pen of Mr. A. M. Hind. Though in historical order it might have been expected that the volume describing drawings of the XV and XVI Century should be the first and not the fifth, it was explained in the preface to Volume I, published in 1915, that the necessity for prolonged and careful research required that the appearance of this section should be deferred to the end. Mr. Popham has fully explained in his Introduction the system on which the results of his minute study of the early Dutch and Flemish drawings in the Department are presented to the reader.
