Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the artistic collaboration between the originators of the ecosex movement, their diverse communities, and the Earth What’s sexy about saving the planet? Funny you should ask. Because that is precisely—or, perhaps, broadly—what Annie Sprinkle and Beth Stephens have spent many years bringing to light in their live art, exhibitions, and films. In 2008, Sprinkle and Stephens married the Earth, which set them on the path to explore the realms of ecosexuality as they became lovers with the Earth and made their mutual pleasure an embodied expression of passion for the environment. Ever since, they have been not just pushing but obliterating the boundaries circumscribing biology and ecology, creating ecosexual art in their performance of an environmentalism that is feminist, queer, sensual, sexual, posthuman, materialist, exuberant, and steeped in humor. Assuming the Ecosexual Position tells of childhood moments that pointed to a future of ecosexuality—for Annie, in her family swimming pool in Los Angeles; for Beth, savoring forbidden tomatoes from the vine on her grandparents’ Appalachian farm. The book describes how the two came together as lovers and collaborators, how they took a stand against homophobia and xenophobia, and how this union led to the miraculous conception of the Love Art Laboratory, which involved influential performance artists Linda M. Montano, Guillermo Gómez-Peña, and feminist pornographer Madison Young. Stephens and Sprinkle share the process of making interactive performance art, including the Chemo Fashion Show, Cuddle, Sidewalk Sex Clinics, and Ecosex Walking Tours. Over the years, they celebrated many more weddings to various nature entities, from the Appalachian Mountains to the Adriatic Sea. To create these weddings, they collaborated with hundreds of people and invited thousands of guests as they vowed to love, honor, and cherish the many elements of the Earth. As entertaining as it is deeply serious, and arriving at a perilous time of sharp differences and constricting categories, the story of this artistic collaboration between Sprinkle, Stephens, their diverse communities, and the Earth opens gender and sexuality, art and environmentalism, to the infinite possibilities and promise of love.

Book excerpt: Autotheory--the commingling of theory and philosophy with autobiography--as a mode of critical artistic practice indebted to feminist writing and activism. In the 2010s, the term "autotheory" began to trend in literary spheres, where it was used to describe books in which memoir and autobiography fused with theory and philosophy. In this book, Lauren Fournier extends the meaning of the term, applying it to other disciplines and practices. Fournier provides a long-awaited account of autotheory, situating it as a mode of contemporary, post-1960s artistic practice that is indebted to feminist writing, art, and activism. Investigating a series of works by writers and artists including Chris Kraus and Adrian Piper, she considers the politics, aesthetics, and ethics of autotheory.

Book excerpt: Photo-based conceptual artist Robert Blanchon left behind an extensive and varied body of work before his untimely death at the age of 34. This publication is the first comprehensive monograph to document his oeuvre and its place within the context of New York City in the 1990s. Like his contemporaries Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Robert Gober, and Zoe Leonard, Blanchon grappled with the legacies of Minimalism and Modernism, the relation between politics and art, and his identification as a gay, HIV-positive artist who nonetheless eschewed identity politics as the basis of an art practice. Blanchon's decade-long exhibition history is marked by a witty, insightful treatment of loss, memory and morality executed primarily through photography but also extending to video, mail art and performance. This publication includes essays by Gregg Bordowitz and Sasha Archibald; selections of the artist's writings and an annotated checklist of his archive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did French musicians and critics interpret jazz--that quintessentially American music--in the mid-twentieth century? How far did players reshape what they learned from records and visitors into more local jazz forms, and how did the music figure in those angry debates that so often suffused French cultural and political life? After Django begins with the famous interwar triumphs of Josephine Baker and Django Reinhardt, but, for the first time, the focus here falls on the French jazz practices of the postwar era. The work of important but neglected French musicians such as Andr Hodeir and Barney Wilen is examined in depth, as are native responses to Americans such as Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk. The book provides an original intertwining of musical and historical narrative, supported by extensive archival work; in clear and compelling prose, Perchard describes the problematic efforts towards aesthetic assimilation and transformation made by those concerned with jazz in fact and in idea, listening to the music as it sounded in discourses around local identity, art, 1968 radicalism, social democracy, and post colonial politics.

Book excerpt: "Hugh Steers: The Complete Paintings is the first publication on the career of American figurative painter Hugh Steers (1962-95), who died of AIDS at the age of 32. Committed to figurative painting at a time when it had fallen out of favor, Steers painted expressionist-realist narratives of a life shadowed by isolation and mortality, yet infused with wry humor, camp and what Steers himself called a 'gorgeous bleakness.' Steers consciously merged AIDS, intimacy and the body into the traditional vocabulary of painting. With his vulnerable subjects depicted in hospital rooms, bedrooms and bathrooms, Steers engaged with radical ideas about male intimacy, queer politics, fragility and health care at the height of the AIDS crisis. Featuring more than 600 full-color images of Steers' paintings on canvas and paper, this volume provides a long-overdue, expansive view of the artist's career and impact."--Amazon.com.
