Book excerpt: A letter bearing news of boyhood friend Karl Udengaard’s death sets Maximilian Fritz on a path of disconcerting reminiscences on his last day as editor of a community newspaper. Growing up as the son of a petrol-station owner in a Lowveld town, twelve-year-old Max is bashed around and bullied – until the arrival of Karl Udengaard. Karl teaches Max how to toughen up, while Max’s feelings for Gunna Udengaard, Karl’s enigmatic mother, rage in secret. Tragedy severs Max’s ties with the wealthy Udengaards. As the decades-old memories unravel, he begins to comprehend his own complicity in his and their misfortunes. Due South of Copenhagen is a masterful tale of the scope of intimate connections between people, small-town living during the height of South Africa’s Border War, and what it takes to put the past to rest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Future of Freemasonry in Denmark talks about what Freemasonry is, but also what it is not . Read about what it is that attracts more than 6 million men around the world, and read about the valuesof Freemasonry, its attitudes and relationship with today's society. Danish Freemasonry differs in important respects from international Freemasonry. Despite a ban on political and religious interference which has been in place for many years, these two areas have had a profound impact on the situation in Denmark today. Things in Denmark have gone wrong. The reader will gain an understanding of why this is and what can happen when people who do not have the right skills are given power. The second part of the book deals with the development of Freemasonry in Denmark with an emphasis on the last 60 years - including an introduction to someone who was both a great asset to the development of Freemasonry, but who also the focus of newspaper headlines here and abroad, including an article in The Telegraph under the headline, "The mysterious Mr Larsen: MI5 spy, terrorist or Walter Mitty fantasist?" Finally, the book raises the question of whether Freemasonry, as we know it and as it has been present in Denmark for the past 273 years, faces growth or decline.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Denmark is primarily made up of one peninsula, Jutland (Jylland in Danish), and two islands, Sealand (SjA]lland) and Funen (Fyn). Sealand is the bigger of the two islands and also where Copenhagen, the capital and biggest city, is located. Denmark is the smallest of the three Scandinavian countries, with only 43,000 square km. There are over 400 islands in total but only 100 of them are inhabited. The country has 4.500 miles of coast line and you are never more than 30 miles from the sea, no matter where you are in the country. The biggest island in the world, Greenland, also belongs to Denmark, as do the Faroe Islands. If Greenland were to be included in the total area of the country, Denmark would be the biggest country in Europe by far and one of the biggest in the world. Denmark is perhaps the most popular of the three countries for campers. There are more than 500 campsites all over the country. The Danish word for inn is kro and if you see that word on a sign along the road, you have found the perfect combination of a place to stay and a place to eat. A long time ago, when people traveled by horse, it was decided that a kro should be placed every 20 km along all common roads in Denmark and, still today, you will find inns all over the country. They are as popular as ever for spending the night, grabbing a bite to eat, or both. Denmark is the number-one biking country of the three. Being a small and flat country, it's often the best way of getting around and biking is extremely popular for recreation. Denmark has over 6,200 miles of designated biking trails. These are just a few details covered in this comprehensive guide to all the activities in the country, plus where to stay and where to dine. This is an excerpt from our much larger guide to Scandinavia.
