This book was released on 1968 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growth and coalescence of voids is a common mechanism of fracture in ductile materials. Analytical work on the problem to date has dealt mainly with isolated voids in perfectly plastic materials, so that strain hardening and interactions between neighboring voids have been neglected. These features of void growth are examined here, but only for a simple geometrical configuration. In particular, the growth of single infinitely long cylindrical voids in bodies of rigid-plastic, strain-hardening material is considered. Bodies with both finite and infinite dimensions normal to the void surface are included in the analysis. The exact relation among the pertinent variables: transverse stress, axial strain, hardening coefficient, void strain and void growth rate is presented. Solution via a bounding technique is given for two general cases. The first case is that of an imposed constant void growth rate and the second case is an imposed constant transverse stress. The results show a decelerating effect of hardening on void growth. Application to the ductile fracture problem of void growth in the neck of a tensile specimen demonstrates the accelerating effect of void growth due to interactions between voids. (Author).
Book Synopsis Limits to Ductility Set by Plastic Flow Localization by :

Book excerpt: The theory of strain localization is reviewed with reference both to local necking in sheet metal forming processes and to more general three dimensional shear band localizations that sometimes mark the onset of ductile rupture. Both bifurcation behavior and the growth of initial imperfections are considered. In addition to analyses based on classical Mises-like constitutive laws, approaches to localization based on constitutive models that may more accurately model processes of slip and progressive rupturing on the microscale in structural alloys are discussed. Among these non-classical constitutive features are the destabilizing roles of yield surface vertices and of non-normality effects, arising, for example, from slight pressure sensitivity of yield. Analyses based on a constitutive model of a progressively cavitating dilational plastic material which is intended to model the process of ductile void growth in metals are also discussed. A variety of numerical results are presented. In the context of the three dimensional theory of localization, it is shown that a simple vertex model predicts ratios of ductility in plane strain tension to ductility in axisymmetric tension qualitatively consistent with experiment, and the destabilizing influence of a hydrostatic stress dependent void nucleation criterion is illustrated. In the sheet necking context, and focussing on positive biaxial stretching, it is shown that forming limit curves based on a simple vertex model and those based on a simple void growth model are qualitatively in accord, although attributing instability to very different physical mechanisms. These forming limit curves are compared with those obtained from the Mises material model and employing various material and geometric imperfections.

This book was released on 1975 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widely used constitutive laws for engineering materials assume plastic incompressibility and no effect on yield of the hydrostatic component of stress. However, void nucleation and growth (and thus bulk dilatancy) are commonly observed in some processes which are characterized by large local plastic flow, such as ductile fracture. The purpose of this work is to develop approximate yield criteria and flow rules for porous (dilatant) ductile materials, showing the role of hydrostatic stress in plastic yield and void growth. Other elements of a constitutive theory for porous ductile materials, such as void nucleation, plastic flow and hardening behavior, and a criterion for ductile fracture will be discussed in Part II. The yield criteria are approximated through an upper bound approach. Simplified physical models for ductile porous materials (aggregates of voids and ductile matrix) are employed, with the matrix material idealized as rigid-perfectly plastic and obeying the von Mises yield criterion. Velocity fields are developed for the matrix which conform to the macroscopic flow behavior of the bulk material. Using a distribution of macroscopic flow fields and working through a dissipation integral, upper bounds to the macroscopic stress fields required for yield are calculated. Their locus in stress space forms the yield locus. It is shown that normality holds for this yield locus, so a flow rule results. Approximate functional forms for the yield loci are developed. 14 figures, 22 references. (auth).

Book Synopsis Computational Mesomechanics of Composites by : Leon L. Mishnaevsky, Jr
Download or read book Computational Mesomechanics of Composites written by Leon L. Mishnaevsky, Jr and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-08-20 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanical properties of composite materials can be improved by tailoring their microstructures. Optimal microstructures of composites, which ensure desired properties of composite materials, can be determined in computational experiments. The subject of this book is the computational analysis of interrelations between mechanical properties (e.g., strength, damage resistance stiffness) and microstructures of composites. The methods of mesomechanics of composites are reviewed, and applied to the modelling of the mechanical behaviour of different groups of composites. Individual chapters are devoted to the computational analysis of the microstructure- mechanical properties relationships of particle reinforced composites, functionally graded and particle clusters reinforced composites, interpenetrating phase and unidirectional fiber reinforced composites, and machining tools materials.
Book Synopsis A Course on Damage Mechanics by : Jean Lemaitre
Download or read book A Course on Damage Mechanics written by Jean Lemaitre and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-14 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new branch of science usually develops thus. Somebody publishes the basic ideas. Hesitatingly at first, then little by little, other original contributions appear, until a certain threshold is reached. Then, overview articles are printed, conferences are held, and a first mention is made in textbooks, until specialized monographs are written. Continuum darnage mechanics has reached that status now. To analyze or, if possible, to predict the failure of machine parts or other structures is one of the main goals of engineering science. Consequently fracture mechanics became one of its leading branches. It was based on the analysis of existing cracks. However, especially under conditions of cyclic loading, this might be too late to prevent a disaster. Therefore, the question regarding the precursory state, that is, the evolution of intemal darnage before macrocracks become visible, was then posed. One of the successful approaches to the problern was Weibull's theory which examined, in a statistical manner, the "weakest link" in the material volume under consideration. Unfortunately it proved too difficult mathematically to be applied to complicated parts or structures. Therefore it was highly appreciated by the scientific of material community when L. M. Kachanov published in 1958 a simple model darnage which subsequently could be extended to brittle elastic, plastic or viscous materials under all conditions of uniaxial or multiaxial, simple or cyclic loadings, so that it may be considered nearly universal.
Book Synopsis Micromechanics Modelling of Ductile Fracture by : Zengtao Chen
Download or read book Micromechanics Modelling of Ductile Fracture written by Zengtao Chen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-02 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes research advances in micromechanics modeling of ductile fractures made in the past two decades. The ultimate goal of this book is to reach manufacturing frontline designers and materials engineers by providing a user-oriented, theoretical background of micromechanics modeling. Accordingly, the book is organized in a unique way, first presenting a vigorous damage percolation model developed by the authors over the last ten years. This model overcomes almost all difficulties of the existing models and can be used to completely accommodate ductile damage developments within a single-measure microstructure frame. Related void damage criteria including nucleation, growth and coalescence are then discussed in detail: how they are improved, when and where they are used in the model, and how the model performs in comparison with the existing models. Sample forming simulations are provided to illustrate the model’s performance.
Book Synopsis Plasticity-Damage Couplings: From Single Crystal to Polycrystalline Materials by : Oana Cazacu
Download or read book Plasticity-Damage Couplings: From Single Crystal to Polycrystalline Materials written by Oana Cazacu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-19 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering a well-balanced blend of theory and hands-on applications, this book presents a unified framework for the main dissipative phenomena in metallic materials: plasticity and damage. Based on representation theory for tensor functions and scale-bridging theorems, this framework enables the development of constitutive models that account for the influence of crystallographic structures and deformation mechanisms on the macroscopic behavior. It allows readers to develop a clear understanding of the range of applicability of any given model, as well as its capabilities and limitations, and provides procedures for parameter identification along with key concepts necessary to solve boundary value problems, making it useful to both researchers and engineering practitioners. Although the book focuses on new contributions to modeling anisotropic materials, the review of the foundations of plasticity and models for isotropic materials, completed with detailed mathematical proofs mean that it is self-consistent and accessible to graduate students in engineering mechanics and material sciences.
Book Synopsis Solder Joint Reliability by : John H. Lau
Download or read book Solder Joint Reliability written by John H. Lau and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 649 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solders have given the designer of modern consumer, commercial, and military electronic systems a remarkable flexibility to interconnect electronic components. The properties of solder have facilitated broad assembly choices that have fueled creative applications to advance technology. Solder is the electrical and me chanical "glue" of electronic assemblies. This pervasive dependency on solder has stimulated new interest in applica tions as well as a more concerted effort to better understand materials properties. We need not look far to see solder being used to interconnect ever finer geo metries. Assembly of micropassive discrete devices that are hardly visible to the unaided eye, of silicon chips directly to ceramic and plastic substrates, and of very fine peripheral leaded packages constitute a few of solder's uses. There has been a marked increase in university research related to solder. New electronic packaging centers stimulate applications, and materials engineering and science departments have demonstrated a new vigor to improve both the materials and our understanding of them. Industrial research and development continues to stimulate new application, and refreshing new packaging ideas are emerging. New handbooks have been published to help both the neophyte and seasoned packaging engineer.

Book Synopsis Voids in Materials by : Gary M. Gladysz
Download or read book Voids in Materials written by Gary M. Gladysz and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2014-09-09 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voids in Materials treats voids of different shapes and forms in various materials, and examines their effects on material properties. The book covers the origins of voids in materials, how they are sometimes introduced in the form of hollow spheres, and the resultant properties of materials containing voids. There are many books that focus on foams (which intentionally incorporate voids into materials) and that cover voids incidental to or unwanted in the fabrication of non-porous materials. In fact, all materials have voids. This book starts from the premise that voids are pervasive in all material on some level. It goes beyond foams to provide a comprehensive overview of voids, a central reference for scientists and engineers to use for the effect of voids in materials. - Includes 3D renderings of void geometries - Explains how and why voids are introduced into materials across the length scales; from nanometer-scale voids up to macro-scale voids - Provides a continuous picture of how material properties change as the volume fraction of voids increases, and the implications for product design

Book Synopsis Adiabatic Shear Localization by : Yilong Bai
Download or read book Adiabatic Shear Localization written by Yilong Bai and published by Pergamon. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adiabatic shear localization is a mode of failure that occurs in dynamic loading. It is characterized by thermal softening occurring over a very narrow region of a material and is usually a precursor to ductile fracture and catastrophic failure. This reference source is the first detailed study of the mechanics and modes of adiabatic shear localization in solids, and provides a systematic description of a number of aspects of adiabatic shear banding. The inclusion of the appendices which provide a quick reference section and a comprehensive collection of thermomechanical data allows rapid access and understanding of the subject and its phenomena. The concepts and techniques described in this work can usefully be applied to solve a multitude of problems encountered by those investigating fracture and damage in materials, impact dynamics, metal working and other areas. This reference book has come about in response to the pressing demand of mechanical and metallurgical engineers for a high quality summary of the knowledge gained over the last twenty years. While fulfilling this requirement, the book is also of great interest to academics and researchers into materials performance.
