Book excerpt: Recreative Minds develops a philosophical theory of imagination that draws upon recent theories and results in psychology. Ideas about how we read the minds of others have put the concept of imagination firmly back on the agenda for philosophy and psychology. Currie and Ravenscroft present atheory of what they call imaginative projection; they show how it fits into a philosophically motivated picture of the mind and of mental states, and how it illuminates and is illuminated by recent developments in cognitive psychology. They argue that we need to recognize a category ofdesire-in-imagination, and that supposition and fantasy should be classed as forms of imagination. They accommodate some of the peculiarities of perceptual forms of imagining such as visual and motor imagery, and suggest that they are important for mind-reading. They argue for a novel view about therelations between imagination and pretence, and suggest that imagining can be, but need not be, the cause of pretending. They show how the theory accommodates but goes beyond the idea of mental simulation, and argue that the contrast between simulation and theory is neither exclusive nor exhaustive. They argue that we can understand certain developmental and psychiatric disorders as arising from faulty imagination. Throughout, they link their discussion to the uses of imagination in our encounters with art, and they conclude with a chapter on responses to tragedy. The final chapter also offersa theory of the emotions that suggests that these states have much in common with perceptual states.Currie and Ravenscroft offer a lucid exploration of a fascinating subject, for readers in philosophy, psychology, and aesthetics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Butchering Small Game and Birds is essential reading for those who have embraced self-sufficiency, and who regard small game and birds, both domesticated and wild, as an essential part of their diet. The book covers rabbits, hare, quail, chicken and turkey as well as game birds and provides comprehensive guidance relating to all aspects of the craft of butchery. It begins with an in-depth examination of equipment and presents instructions on how to use and maintain knives correctly. This is followed by a careful consideration of how to humanely dispatch the animal or bird for butchering with speed and precision. The volume then studies in detail the butchery techniques and procedures including basic small game and bird anatomy, the importance of meat inspection and hygiene and dealing with aged birds and animals. Further sections cover techniques such as paunching, the removal of offal, extraction of shot, skinning, plucking, drawing and dressing birds, washing carcases, jointing rabbits and hares and trussing. The preservation of meat, preparing meat for the freezer and hanging and curing of skins is also covered following the philosophy that every part of an animal or bird that is usable should be used. This invaluable book presents a complete manual for anyone who wishes to become a humane and skilled home butcher, and is superbly illustrated with 164 colour step-by-step photographs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daphne and Jacob Miller wrote this book with a vivid recollection, which is communicated instantly to the reader. It is unusual and innovative to have the same story told in two different but harmonizing voices. The style is factual, laconic, and detailed it is the more impressive for its lack of exaggeration. The facts speak for themselves with immense authority. Daphne and Jake Miller would like to pay a distinctive tribute to the people who defied the odds and emerged from the Great Depression and World War II to lead highly successful lives. Page 38 from the book: ..."one another without being caught. I think we liked each other. ..."(Daphne) When we were staying in the Hampton Roe area of London my cousin Joan and I were in the kitchen doing some chores. We suddenly heard one of those buzz bombs coming in our direction. We heard the engine suddenly cut out. This meant it was starting its drop earthward. We heard the the Vl bomb coming down as we stood there in the kitchen, both facing each other. We were scared so bad both of us looked as if our eyes were going to pop out of our heads. In our panic we forgot the stair case shelter, dived to the floor of the kitchen and pulled a small throw-rug over our heads! After the V1 bomb came down we had a good laugh at our stupidity. ************************************************ Page 119 from the book. ",,,about those women that would catch one´s eyes in a flash was their bare boobs. The boobs hung down their chests for about sixteen inches before you could see the nipples on the lower end. "The Island Commander who we dubbed a spoil sport, thought us Allied Military people did not need such a viewing. The Island Commander called the local Papuab Chief and his wife to a council meeting. Much to our regret he got the Chief and his wife to understand his directions. He would issue two white Navy T-shirts (U.S. Navy underwear tops) to them for each female. He ordered the Chief to see that they wore one of those T-shirts at all times. "So far so good...in no time from our viewing point we could see white clad females along the forest and on the beaches. In a couple of days we had to make a run for another load of supplies and the personnel of a U. S. Navy Construction Battalion. "As we were entering the port on our return the forward main deck of our ship suddenly became occupied by more than the normal number of people who should be there. Those men on the forwarded deck were the first ones to view a great scene. The natives had cut holes in the chest of the T-shirts"...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 2013 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award Quarter-Finalist. The Paranormal Romance Guild say - "Georgiana Derwent has managed to merge the world of Oxford University, with its rich history and very British traditions with a totally entertaining and plausible vampire story. This is going to be a favourite series." A Tale of the Posh, the Privileged and the Paranormal... The Cavaliers are the most elite society at Oxford University - rich, powerful, and beautiful. No one realises that they are no ordinary students, but a group of aristocratic vampires from the English Civil War. For four hundred years they have groomed the most promising students to run the government, police, and finance in the way the vampires wish, granting them eternal life in return for absolute obedience. When Harriet French arrives at Oxford University from her working class northern state school, she's prepared for a culture shock, but not to become embroiled in the Cavaliers' scheming and bloodlust. Harriet thought she'd be busy enough juggling her demanding tutor, new friends, and the murky world of student politics. But now, she must find the rebel vampire who is killing off the members, stop the Cavaliers from orchestrating a massacre of the year's most beautiful and successful students, and defy the Society to be with the man of her dreams. Oxford Blood is a British, adult, paranormal romance. It's a tale with vampires that aren't afraid to kill and a heroine who's not afraid of sex or her own ambition. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Georgiana Derwent read History at Oxford University. Aside from the vampires, The Cavaliers Series is an exaggerated but fairly accurate portrayal of her time there. She now works in London and lives with her fiance. He's been very supportive throughout the writing of her books, mainly because he likes to claim that all the most attractive characters are based on him. Georgiana fell in love with vampire novels after reading "The Vampire Diaries" back in 2000. At the time it was a struggle to find any similar paranormal romances, a situation that it's fair to say seems to have been rectified in the last few years. She now loves paranormal series such as True Blood, fantasy novels, and modern literary works in roughly equal measure. Ever since her teens, she wanted to write a vampire series. Ever since going to Oxford she wanted to write a book about her experiences there. During a dull few months between finishing university and starting her graduate job, she had the idea of combining the two and "The Cavaliers Series" was born.
