Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject Philosophy - Theoretical (Realisation, Science, Logic, Language), University of Ibadan, language: English, abstract: This paper attempts to provide a framework for understanding the concept of the human person in his essential and ontological beingness in the light of Yorùbá worldview. The paper argues that the mind-body problem that has taken a central seat in philosophy would be better appreciated if it is allowed to remain as culture-relative. In other words, it would a mistaken assumption of sort to assume that the western categories of monism or Cartesian dualism are sufficient theories around which the mind-body problem should be discussed. At the heart of the discussion is an attempt to open up the Yorùbá perspective to the mind-body problem which, though primarily acknowledges among other considerations that the human person is composed of both material-physical and immaterial-spiritual (metaphysical) aspects, insists a person is more than the mind and body. An attempt will also be made in this project to make a contrast between Cartesian dualism and Yorùbá worldview of the composition of the human person and draw a parallel between the two perspectives. Central to the numerous challenges that confront philosophy and philosophers is inter alia the question of the composition of the human person. Essentially, philosophers, especially metaphysicians, grapple with the question of "who a person is?" Put differently, what constitutes the human nature? Integrally connected to such fundamental questions are other posers that bother on the mind-body problem, which, on the one hand, focus on the composition of the person as a material being. Such questions like "Is man a composition of mind and body? And, what kind of relationship or interaction (if any) goes on between the domains of substances? ‘Is the human person an entirely physical entity?" Or, "Is he solely non-physical or, is he composed of both physical and non-physical features?" These are the interrogative legacies of Cartesian substance dualism and interactionism bequeathed to philosophy. There is no straightforward answer to these questions as a first-glance approach could present them to be.
Book Synopsis The Mind-Body-Problem from the perspective of the Yoruba (african) Concept of a Person by : Amodu Akeem
Download or read book The Mind-Body-Problem from the perspective of the Yoruba (african) Concept of a Person written by Amodu Akeem and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2003 in the subject Philosophy - General Essays, Eras, Obafemi Awolowo University (Faculty of Arts), course: Philosophy, language: English, abstract: This thesis is a critical study of the traditional mind-body problem from the perspective of the Yoruba (African) concept of a person. The thesis attempted to see a plausible Yoruba response to the mind-body problem vis-à-vis the problem of defining a person. The methods of inquiry are those of critical exposition, conceptual clarification and analytical evaluation. The research involved consultation and analysis of existing inter-disciplinary literature on the Philosophy of Mind; a critical study of relevant published Ifa Literary Corpus; and discussion sessions with practitioners of Ifá and other genres of Yoruba folktales, as well as Yoruba-speaking individuals on their ideas of the Yoruba concept of a person. The specific objectives are to critically outline the nature of the mind-body problem, analytically present what may be regarded as a plausible account of the Yoruba concept of a person, see whether the mind-body problem arises for the Yoruba concept of a person, do a comparative study of contemporary scientific concepts of a person and the Yoruba concept of a person and finally, to do a philosophical appraisal of the Yoruba concept of a person vis-à-vis its response to the mind-body problem, and the implication of that concept of a person for social existence. The thesis uncovered what may be identified as the Yoruba Multiple-aspect concept of a person, in the light of which the mind-body problem does not arise when, rather than viewed as a separate entity the mind is viewed as a state or ability of the body. The research concluded, in the light of what it outlines as the Yoruba Multiple-aspect concept of a person, that the socio-ethical problems and the destructive and negative uses to which the fruits of the advancements of the physical sciences have been put are the unfortunate consequences of man’s rather unfortunate attempt to define himself in the simplest and most parsimonious terms.
Book Synopsis The Invention of Women by : Oyèrónkẹ́ Oyěwùmí
Download or read book The Invention of Women written by Oyèrónkẹ́ Oyěwùmí and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1997-10 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "woman question", this book asserts, is a Western one, and not a proper lens for viewing African society. A work that rethinks gender as a Western contruction, The Invention of Women offers a new way of understanding both Yoruban and Western cultures. Oyewumi traces the misapplication of Western, body-oriented concepts of gender through the history of gender discourses in Yoruba studies. Her analysis shows the paradoxical nature of two fundamental assumptions of feminist theory: that gender is socially constructed in old Yoruba society, and that social organization was determined by relative age.

Book Synopsis Memories of Africa by : Toyin Falola
Download or read book Memories of Africa written by Toyin Falola and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2023-03-24 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memories of Africa: Home and Abroad in the United States suggests a new lens for viewing African Diaspora studies: the experiences of African memoirists who live in the United States. The book shows how African Diaspora memoirs beautifully and grippingly depict the experiences of African migrants over time through political, social, and cultural spheres. In reading African Diaspora memoirs from the transatlantic slave trade period to the present, a reader can understand the complexity of the African migrant legacy and evolution. Author Toyin Falola argues that memoirs are significant not only in their interpretation of events conveyed by the memoirists but also in demonstrating how interpersonal and human the stories told can be. Memoirs are powerful because they are emotionally captivating and because important themes and events circulate around a particular person (in this case, the memoirist). Undoubtedly, a memoir is significant because it can teach anyone about a part of the human experience, even if the “facts” are not described without bias. Through this sort of narrative, the reader cannot help but enter into the memoirist’s mind and, therefore, feel more empathy for them. In doing so, the reader can “feel” what the memoirist feels and “see” what the memoirist sees as clearly as is humanly possible. In this way, the historical events and life lessons become tangible and poignantly real to the reader.
Book Synopsis Intercultural Hermeneutics - Understanding Culture and Religion by : Chibueze Udeani

This book was released on 2021-01-10 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New hermeneutical challenges abound within the process of globalisation especially as they pertain to culture and religion. Consequently, a new form of hermeneutics approached from an intercultural perspective is needed. This requires, if not a new set of hermeneutical tools then, at least, a serious, profound and critical analysis and constructive adaptation of the already available set of hermeneutical tools. Intercultural hermeneutics in the understanding of religion and culture and among cultures and religions is being proposed here as this new form of art or science of understanding. Chibueze C. Udeani is of Igbo origin and currently professor of missiology and dialogue of religions at Julius Maximilian's university Würzburg, Germany.

Book Synopsis Harmonious Monism by : Chris Ijiomah
Download or read book Harmonious Monism written by Chris Ijiomah and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-04-23 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a reaction against young Levy Bruhl's position that the world's (African) thought is pre- logical. Systematically therefore it exposes first the influence of positivism and two valued Logic on Bruhl which made him to be anti- spiritualism and second interpreted African thought from two- valued logic point of view. This wrong interpretational tool resulted to his ''onslaught on African thought'' which is the subject of the book's reaction. This book 's position is that every interpretation stems from a particular logic and this logic needs to evolve from the same ontological context with the phenomenon that is to be interpreted. The implication of this is that, there is a bio conditional structural relationship between every logic and its cultural ontology. The book investigates this assertion using prevalent (2vl) of the West and the prevalent ontology of the the same culture. The investigation proved positive. On the above discovery the book developed the theory of structural analogy and logical functionalism (SAALF) as a justification for the derivation of a prevalent trinitarian logic from African trinitarian prevalent ontology. From this theoretical standpoint, the book in agreement with some twentieth century analytic logicians defines logic as a science of relation between realities from which principles of argumentation and reasoning can be developed. This book goes ahead to use this logic to explain some African phenomena such as the concept of African healing oath-taking and education. For the benefit of doubt the book differentiates between Harmonious monism and Hermeneutics as an answer to some questions of the critics.

Book Synopsis Logic and African Philosophy by : Jonathan O. Chimakonam
Download or read book Logic and African Philosophy written by Jonathan O. Chimakonam and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Logic and African Philosophy: Seminal Essays on African Systems of Thought” aims to put African intellectual history in perspective, with focus on the subjects of racism, logic, language, and psychology. The volume seeks to fill in the gaps left by the exclusion of African thinkers that are frequent in the curricula of African schools concerning history, sociology, philosophy, and cultural studies. The book is divided into four parts that are preceded by an introduction to link up the essays and emphasise their sociological implications. Part one is comprised of essays that opened the controversy of whether logic can be found in traditional African cultures as well as other matters like the nature of the mind and behaviour of African peoples. The essays in part two are centred on the following question: are the laws of thought present in African languages and cultures? Part three brings together essays that sparkle the debate on whether there can be such a thing as African logic, which stems from the discussions in part two. Part four is concerned on the theme of system-building in logic; contributions are written by members of the budding African philosophy movement called the “Conversational School of Philosophy” based at the University of Calabar, and the main objective of their papers is to formulate systems of African logic.
Book Synopsis Ubuntu and Buddhism in Higher Education by : David Robinson-Morris
Download or read book Ubuntu and Buddhism in Higher Education written by David Robinson-Morris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ubuntu and Buddhism in Higher Education theorizes the equal privileging of ontology and epistemology towards a balanced focus on ‘being-becoming’ and knowledge acquisition within the field of higher education. In response to the shift in higher education’s aims and purposes beginning in the latter half of the 20th century, this book reconsiders higher education and Western subjectivity through southern African (Ubuntu) and Eastern (Buddhist) onto-epistemologies. By mapping these other-than-West ontological viewpoints onto the discourse surrounding higher education, this volume presents a vision of colleges and universities as transformational institutions promoting our shared connection to the human and non-human world, and deepens our understanding of what it means to be a human being.

In this accessible introduction, Baba Ifa Karade provides an overview of the Yoruba tradition and its influence in the West. He describes the sixteen Orisha, or spirit gods, and shows us how to work with divination, use the energy centers of the body to internalize the teachings of Yoruba, and create a sacred place of worship. The book also includes prayers, dances, songs, offerings, and sacrifices to honor the Orisha.
