Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Sprachausgabe).

They support the cultivation of agriculture and livestock, and they are also are also integral to the ecosystem. And, in many locations across Switzerland, they are in need of restoration by those with a thorough understanding of their roles and vast range of types and purposes. Drawing on the copious research and practice of the Swiss Environmental Action Fund, Dry Stone Walls is a uniquely comprehensive work on the topic, combining cultural history with a guide to plants and animals that find their habitat in such structures and a practical, step-by-step manual to the building and maintenance of dry stone walls. Richly illustrated with more than four hundred photographs and drawings, including many in color, the book contains a wealth of advice for both the planning of new dry stone walls and the care of existing ones, as well as information on structural analysis and the organization of building sites. The book will serve as a guide for future generations everywhere to this ancient practice that is in danger of extinction.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide clear and helpful information for maintaining gravel roads. Very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel road maintenance has traditionally been "more of an art than a science" and very few formal standards exist. This manual contains guidelines to help answer the questions that arise concerning gravel road maintenance such as: What is enough surface crown? What is too much? What causes corrugation? The information is as nontechnical as possible without sacrificing clear guidelines and instructions on how to do the job right.

Book excerpt: This text shows how to build a wall using the traditional method of dry stone masonry in which carefully selected stones are properly stacked and held together without mortar. As well as being beautiful, a dry stone wall is stronger, more stable and more resistant to climate than a mortared wall. More than 100 full colour photographs of walls, bridges and decorative garden elements in various steps of construction are presented as well as illustrations that show the steps and cross sections that highlight the building methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design and Construction Guidelines for Dry-Stack Concrete Masonry was developed by The Masonry Society's Design Practices Committee as a non-mandatory aid for designers, building officials, contractors, educators, and others interested in dry-stack masonry construction.Dry-stack masonry construction, which consists of individual masonry units placed without the use of mortar in the head and bed joints, is one of the earliest forms of construction. Despite its historical use, there is little in the way of contemporary design and construction guidance in the United States on the use of dry-stack masonry systems for structural applications. Because the majority of dry-stack research has been limited to reinforced or prestressed concrete masonry construction, the scope of this guide is limited to reinforced or prestressed, dry-stack construction of concrete masonry units. There are dry-stack masonry systems specifically intended for veneer applications. Because veneer systems do not function as part of the structural system, they are not included in this guide. In addition, this guide does not address the design or construction of unreinforced dry-stack masonry systems or segmental retaining wall systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost all homes, apartments, and commercial buildings will experience leaks, flooding, or other forms of excessive indoor dampness at some point. Not only is excessive dampness a health problem by itself, it also contributes to several other potentially problematic types of situations. Molds and other microbial agents favor damp indoor environments, and excess moisture may initiate the release of chemical emissions from damaged building materials and furnishings. This new book from the Institute of Medicine examines the health impact of exposures resulting from damp indoor environments and offers recommendations for public health interventions. Damp Indoor Spaces and Health covers a broad range of topics. The book not only examines the relationship between damp or moldy indoor environments and adverse health outcomes but also discusses how and where buildings get wet, how dampness influences microbial growth and chemical emissions, ways to prevent and remediate dampness, and elements of a public health response to the issues. A comprehensive literature review finds sufficient evidence of an association between damp indoor environments and some upper respiratory tract symptoms, coughing, wheezing, and asthma symptoms in sensitized persons. This important book will be of interest to a wide-ranging audience of science, health, engineering, and building professionals, government officials, and members of the public.
