Book excerpt: "Drum-Taps" by Walt Whitman is an affirmative and poignant collection of poems that reflects the poet's deep engagement with the American Civil War. Published during the mid-19th century, Whitman's work captures the emotional and physical toll of war while celebrating the resilience and spirit of the American people. In "Drum-Taps," readers can expect a series of verses that provide a vivid and personal portrayal of the Civil War experience. Whitman, often referred to as the "poet of democracy," likely employs a free verse style to convey the raw and unfiltered emotions of soldiers on the battlefield, as well as the impact of the war on the nation. The title, "Drum-Taps," suggests a thematic focus on the military and the rhythmic beats of war drums, emphasizing the sounds and cadences associated with conflict. Whitman's verses may explore themes of camaraderie, sacrifice, and the profound human experiences that emerge during times of strife.

Book Synopsis Beat! Beat! Drums! by : Walt Whitman
Download or read book Beat! Beat! Drums! written by Walt Whitman and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015-12-12 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walter "Walt" Whitman (1819 - 1892) was an American poet, essayist and journalist. A humanist, he was a part of the transition between transcendentalism and realism, incorporating both views in his works. Whitman is among the most influential poets in the American canon, often called the father of free verse. Whitman's work breaks the boundaries of poetic form and is generally prose-like. He also used unusual images and symbols in his poetry, including rotting leaves, tufts of straw, and debris. He also openly wrote about death and sexuality, including prostitution. He is often labeled as the father of free verse, though he did not invent it. Whitman wrote in the preface to the 1855 edition of Leaves of Grass, "The proof of a poet is that his country absorbs him as affectionately as he has absorbed it." He believed there was a vital, symbiotic relationship between the poet and society. This connection was emphasized especially in "Song of Myself" by using an all-powerful first-person narration. As an American epic, it deviated from the historic use of an elevated hero and instead assumed the identity of the common people. Leaves of Grass also responded to the impact that recent urbanization in the United States had on the masses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Osip Mandelstam is one of the greatest of twentieth-century poets and Voronezh Notebooks, a sequence of poems composed between 1935 and 1937 when he was living in internal exile in the Soviet city of Voronezh, is his last and most exploratory work. Meditating on death and survival, on power and poetry, on marriage, madness, friendship, and memory, challenging Stalin between lines that are full of the sights and sounds of the steppes, blue sky and black earth, the roads, winter breath, spring with its birds and flowers and bees, the notebooks are a continual improvisation and an unapologetic affirmation of poetry as life.

Book excerpt: There's a long history of dialogue-poems: Sir Philip Sidney, William Butler Yeats, Sylvia Plath, and Emily Dickinson. Oventile and Florian are working that side of the street today but with a lot more octane. In love with language and blessed with a sense of humor, these two poets entertain, enlighten, and expand everyone's horizons. --Ron Koertge, author of more than a dozen books of poetry, has poems in two volumes of Best American Poetry and is a 2017 Pushcart Prize winner. Koertge is also the author of the poem "Negative Space," short-listed for a 2018 Oscar in Animated Short Films. --- Sophia Lethe Talks Doxodox Down tells of Doxodox's not quite requited amorous entanglement with Sophia Lethe. The story takes the form of brief poetic dialogues between the two. Each dialogue exercises a specific trope, the name of which lends the given dialogue its title. Doxodox implores; Sophia Lethe demurs. Though their standoff becomes infernal, the two maintain their mordant and sometimes lewd humor as they muse on the possibilities and impossibilities of desire, life, and fate. Doxodox persists to the end, but does Sophia Lethe ever actually fall for him? Sophia Lethe Talks Doxodox Down by Robert Savino Oventile and Sandy Florian conducts the reader on a boisterous tour of tropes to the heart of a vertiginous folie à deux.

Book excerpt: "... this volume presents a reasonable, fresh, and well-researched reading of several key texts in American studies." -- Journal of the American Studies Association of Texas During the Civil War, a crisis erupted in philanthropy that dramatically changed humanitarian theories and demanded new approaches to humanitarian work. Certain writer-activists began to advocate an "eccentric benevolence" -- a type of philanthropy that would undo the distinction between the powerful bestowers of benevolence and the weaker folks who receive it. Among the figures discussed are the anti-philanthropic Henry David Thoreau and the dangerously philanthropic John Brown.
