Book Synopsis With Stalin against Tito by : Ivo Banac
Download or read book With Stalin against Tito written by Ivo Banac and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1948 in a series of moves that culminated in the famous Cominform Resolution, Stalin struck at the Communist Party in Yugoslavia, provoking the first split in the Communist state system. With this long-awaited book, Ivo Banac becomes the first scholar to assess the domestic consequences of Yugoslavia's expulsion from the Cominform, and his findings will radically revise some of our most basic assumptions about Tito's revolution. Banac's subject is the nature and fate of those elements in the Yugoslav Communist party who were said to have sided with Moscow against their own country's leadership. He demonstrates that the so-called Cominformists represented as much as twenty-percent of the party membership and had widely divergent aims. He then reconstructs the history of the labrynthine factional struggles that preceded and accompanied the 1948 split and shows that, as always, the national question played the dominant role in Yugoslav politics. After identifying the members of the opposition and mapping its course, Banac recounts the harsh repression of the movement. He provides massive documentation of startling irony: the conflict with Stalin played the same part in the shaping of Yugoslavia's political system as the collectivization and purges of the 1930's did in the history of Soviet communism.

Download or read book The Cambridge History of Communism: Volume 2, The Socialist Camp and World Power 1941–1960s written by Norman Naimark and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-21 with total page 1116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second volume of The Cambridge History of Communism explores the rise of Communist states and movements after World War II. Leading experts analyze archival sources from formerly Communist states to re-examine the limits to Moscow's control of its satellites; the de-Stalinization of 1956; Communist reform movements; the rise and fall of the Sino-Soviet alliance; the growth of Communism in Asia, Africa and Latin America; and the effects of the Sino-Soviet split on world Communism. Chapters explore the cultures of Communism in the United States, Western Europe and China, and the conflicts engendered by nationalism and the continued need for support from Moscow. With the danger of a new Cold War developing between former and current Communist states and the West, this account of the roots, development and dissolution of the socialist bloc is essential reading.

Book Synopsis Creating a Socialist Yugoslavia by : Hilde Katrine Haug
Download or read book Creating a Socialist Yugoslavia written by Hilde Katrine Haug and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-03-30 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Yugoslav communists came into power in 1945, they claimed to have introduced a socialist solution to the Yugoslav national question. But what did this claim imply? 'Creating a Socialist Yugoslavia: Tito, Communist Leadership and the National Question' charts the approach pursued by Yugoslav communist leaders from their endorsement in 1935 of a strategy committing to the search for a 'socialist solution' to the national question within a multinational Yugoslav context, until the party disintegrated in 1990. Hilde Katrine Haug examines the impact of the communist leadership's aspirations to create a socialist Yugoslavia on their management of national conflict in the highly heterogeneous Yugoslav state entity.
Book Synopsis Peasants and Communists by : Melissa Katherine Bokovoy
Download or read book Peasants and Communists written by Melissa Katherine Bokovoy and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Melissa K. Bokovoy explores the dynamic relationship between the Communist Party of Yugoslavia (KPJ) and Yugoslavia's peasantry majority from 1941-1953. She challenges current explanations for the party's decision to end all efforts at collectivization. Her argument rests on an extensive examination of the uneasy coalition between a radical, revolutionary elite, hoping to move from a predominantly rural country to a modernized state, and an insurgent peasantry, utterly resistant to change.
