This book was released on 1987 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wettable powder formulation of diflubenzuron, Dimilin® WP-25, was aerially sprayed as an aqueous suspension over four 15 ha plots in conifer forests in Newfoundland using different volume and emission rates of application. A Piper Pawnee aircraft equipped with six Micronair® AU5000 atomizers delivered the spray mixtures. Plot P9-35/4.7 was treated with 35 g active ingredient (AI) in 4.7 L/ha, plots P10-70/4.7 and P16-70/4.7 with 70 g AI in 4.7 L/ha, and plot P11-30/2.0 with 30 g AI in 2.0 L/ha. The first three plots were each sprayed at an emission rate of 48.13 L/min, the fourth plot at 20.48 L/min. Spray droplets were sampled with Kromekote® cards to determine the size spectra of the spray cloud reaching the ground level. The use of a tracer dye, Erio Acid Red, facilitated droplet measurements on the sampling cards. Glass plates were used to collect deposits of the tracer dye for colorimetric determination of the percent recovery of the spray volume emitted.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spray droplet size has long been recognized as the most important variable that aerial applicators can influence to mitigate spray drift from the application site. There are several different technologies that are used by researchers to measure droplet size from spray nozzles. The objective of these studies was to determine the influence of eight spray adjuvants on the droplet size spectrum produced by two nozzles in a high-speed wind tunnel when characterized using three different droplet size measurement systems. The adjuvant, nozzles, and airspeeds used in these studies are commonly used by aerial applicators. Three droplet sizing systems (Malvern laser diffraction, PMS optical array probe, and LaVision laser imaging) were simultaneously operated to measure the spray droplet size spectra for each adjuvant, airspeed, and nozzle combination. Two spray nozzles (a D6-46 nozzle and a D2 straight stream nozzle) were evaluated in a high-speed wind tunnel at airspeeds of 45 and 58 m/sec. There were significant differences in the droplet size spectra produced by the eight spray adjuvants tested. There were also significant differences between the droplet size values reported by the three measurement systems (Malvern, LaVision, and PMS) evaluated; however, there was considerable agreement trendwise. In general, the Malvern reported smaller spray droplet size spectra values than the LaVision, while the PMS system generally reported the largest spray droplet size spectra values. These tests are the first reported studies where all three droplet sizing systems were operated simultaneously.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various experimental techniques have been developed to recover droplet size distributions emitted from rotary atomizers. These techniques include both single line-of-sight measurements through the center of the spray cloud and volume weighted averaging from multiple passes through portions of the spray. Because the droplet size distribution of a spray is one of the most important inputs into aerial spray prediction models such as AgDRIFT®, a consistent, widely-accepted standard for rotary atomizers should be developed and implemented with regard to this measurement. No such standard currently exists. The present paper summarizes current measurement techniques and develops a simple computer model to predict droplet movement following emission from a rotary atomizer in a wind tunnel. Qualitative comparisons are made with available data to demonstrate the effects of single line-of-sight measurements and weighted averaging from multiple passes.

Book excerpt: A water spray, from a twin-fluid atomizer, was studied at different air temperature and at atmospheric pressure. The Sauter Mean Diameter, D32, and the droplet volume distribution were measured at four different distances from the injector. An optical method was used to measure droplet sizes. Predictions of the Sauter Mean Diameter, liquid volume concentration and droplet size distribution were also evaluated. The influence of the air velocity, air temperature and of the water flow rate in the spray S.M.D. and in the liquid volume concentration at different distance from the injector have been measured. The predictions showed good agreement with experimental results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dependence of present farming on artificial input of “chemical fertilizers” has caused numerous ecological tribulations associated with global warming and soil contamination. Moreover, there is an essential requirement for realistic agricultural practices on a comprehensive level. Accordingly, biofertilizers including microbes have been recommended as feasible environmentally sound solutions for agricultural practices which not only are natural, and cost-effective but also preserve soil environs and important biota of agricultural land. In addition, it enhances the nutrient quantity of soils organically. Microbial biofertilizers promote plant growth by escalating proficient absorption of nutrients for the plants and by providing an excellent disease-fighting mechanism.Agriculture, the backbone of human sustenance, has been put under tremendous pressure by the ever-increasing human population. Although various modern agro-techniques boosted agricultural production, the excessive use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides have proven extremely detrimental to agriculture as well as to the environment in which it is carried out. Besides this some faulty agricultural practices like monoculture and defective irrigation, further complicate the scenario by eliminating biodiversity, increasing the efflux of nutrients into the water bodies, the formation of algal blooms, eutrophication, damaging the water quality and lowering fish stocks. Biofertilizers are the organic compounds applied to crops for their sustainable growth and the sustainability of the environment as the microbiota associated with biofertilizers interact with the soil, roots and seeds to enhance soil fertility. Application of biofertilizers results in the increased mineral and water uptake, root development, vegetative growth and nitrogen fixation besides liberating growth-promoting substances and minerals that help the maintenance of soil fertility. They further act as antagonists and play a pivotal role in neutralising soil-borne plant pathogens and thus, help in the bio-control of diseases. Application of biofertilizers instead of synthetic fertilizers could be a promising technique to raise agricultural productivity without degrading environmental quality. The present book focuses on the latest research approaches and updates from the microbiota and their applications in the agriculture industry. We believe this book addresses various challenges and shed lights on the possible future of the sustainable agricultural system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant growth promoting microorganisms (PGPM) have gained acceptance and importance due to their dual benefits of promoting plant growth in addition to managing plant pests and diseases and are extensively used as microbial inoculants in improving agricultural productivity. Use of PGPM mixtures and their integration with other means, like host resistance and chemicals, has proven to be more useful in management of several disease problems. Successful greenhouse and field demonstrations have been done using PGPM for growth promotion and resistance induction in various crops, against a broad spectrum of pathogens. Practical use of PGPM-based products has advanced and many formulations are made available in commercial scale, and more are currently under development. Further, novel formulation technologies have been formulated. Microorganisms constitute the major players in the rhizosphere and their composition and biomass significantly alters the plants response to the environment. Composition and interaction of rhizomicroflora with its surroundings highly influences plant health and productivity. Such beneficial rhizo-ecosystems engineering and manipulation of the rhizosphere to exploit or enhance this innate genetic potential, which will most probably play a key role in the future development of sustainable agricultural processes, is also reviewed. In recent years, a substantial amount of work has been done in the area of PGPM and voluminous literature is available. This book presents a methodical, comprehensive and latest research survey in this area. An overview of the scale and impact of PGPM in plant growth promotion and management of crop diseases, focusing attention on details most relevant to the development and application of biological control strategies involving various microbial strains is discussed. Problems and prospects of commercialisation, advantages and disadvantages of their use and their potential for integrated pest management are also outlined. Most of the available books either refer to the subject of plant growth promoting fungi or plant growth promoting bacteria, however, this comprehensive book includes research pertaining to all beneficial microorganisms that are plant growth promoting in nature. Moreover, this is a rapidly developing field of research and has global impact. Therefore, keeping in pace with the latest developments in this area is totally necessary, and this book will be a latest and up-to-date compilation of the research from different parts of the world.
