Book excerpt: The focal point of interest in this fascinating and beautiful book by one of the leading authorities in his field is the art of driving for pleasure and the relationship between man, the carriage, and the driving horse. It begins by investigating the emergence of the elegant carriage in Italy and then describes the development of the art of driving in 17th and 18th century France. It follows the development of the perfection of driving for pleasure in England and Germany during the 19th and 20th centuries, commencing with the modern sport of competitive driving as we know it today. Various driving techniques are discussed, as are the different styles of harness and methods of harnessing up in Europe, and includes the development of the driving bit and the special rein systems. Traditional driving as it is known today and the various questions as to how to turnout correctly—which carriage suits, which type of horse, and on what occasion—are dealt with in the last chapter of this book which provides solid answers.

This fascinating and informative treatise is highly recommended for those with an interest in traditional transportation and its evolution, and it would make for a fine addition to collections of allied literature. Contents include: “The Primitive Vehicle”, “The Age of Litters”, “Introduction of the Coach (1450—1600)”, “Interlude of the Chair”, “A Conference Between Sir Harry Pierce’s Chariot and Mrs. D. Stopford’s Chair”, “Seventeenth-Century Innovations”, “The Brighton, Bath and Dover Roads”, “Old Coaching Days”, etc. Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. Book excerpt: To best utilize the capabilities of colonial horses and cope with rough terrain, novel or unconventional forms of harnessing and driving flourished in Australia. The swift and pervasive adoption of American-style vehicles from the 1850s is charted and linked to fundamental attitudinal changes within society, particularly the development of ideals of democracy and of a growing sense of Australian-ness. The clash between status and utility was finally decided in favour of utility, though this was not manifest in any new local design, but rather through the adoption and further development of an import, the American buggy. It is argued that the utilitarian approach towards personal transport influenced the early and widespread adoption of the automobile in Australia, while the particular success of American automobiles may be in part attributed to the successful assimilation of American horse-drawn vehicles and associated technologies.
Download or read book The Car Show written by Nicolae Sfetcu and published by Nicolae Sfetcu. This book was released on 2014-04-27 with total page 647 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This e-book details the most interesting and important characteristics of the automobiles, car maintenance, styling features, car body style, the standard classification of the cars, an history of the automobiles, introduction in the automotive industry, and the traffic code, rules and signs. An automobile, usually called a car (an old word for carriage) or a truck, is a wheeled vehicle that carries its own engine. Older terms include horseless carriage and motor car, with “motor” referring to what is now usually called the engine. It has seats for the driver and, almost without exception, for at least one passenger. The automobile was hailed as an environmental improvement over horses when it was first introduced. Before its introduction, in New York City, over 10,000 tons of manure had to be removed from the streets daily. However, in 2006 the automobile is one of the primary sources of worldwide air pollution and cause of substantial noise and health effects.

Book Synopsis Roads Were Not Built for Cars by : Carlton Reid
Download or read book Roads Were Not Built for Cars written by Carlton Reid and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2015-04-09 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Roads Were Not Built for Cars, Carlton Reid reveals the pivotal—and largely unrecognized—role that bicyclists played in the development of modern roadways. Reid introduces readers to cycling personalities, such as Henry Ford, and the cycling advocacy groups that influenced early road improvements, literally paving the way for the motor car. When the bicycle morphed from the vehicle of rich transport progressives in the 1890s to the “poor man’s transport” in the 1920s, some cyclists became ardent motorists and were all too happy to forget their cycling roots. But, Reid explains, many motor pioneers continued cycling, celebrating the shared links between transport modes that are now seen as worlds apart. In this engaging and meticulously researched book, Carlton Reid encourages us all to celebrate those links once again.
