Book Synopsis Preventing Teen Motor Crashes by : National Research Council
Download or read book Preventing Teen Motor Crashes written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-02-23 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a public health perspective, motor vehicle crashes are among the most serious problems facing teenagers. Even after more than six months of being licensed to drive alone, teens are two to three times more likely to be in a fatal crash than are the more experienced drivers. Crash rates are significantly higher for male drivers, and young people in the United States are at greater risk of dying or being injured in an automobile than their peers around the world. In fact, in 2003 motor vehicle crashes was the leading cause of death for youth ages 16-20 in the United States. Understanding how and why teen motor vehicle crashes happen is key to developing countermeasures to reduce their number. Applying this understanding to the development of prevention strategies holds significant promise for improving safety but many of these efforts are thwarted by a lack of evidence as to which prevention strategies are most effective. Preventing Teen Motor Crashes presents data from a multidisciplinary group that shared information on emerging technology for studying, monitoring, and controlling driving behavior. The book provides an overview of the factual information that was presented, as well as the insights that emerged about the role researchers can play in reducing and preventing teen motor crashes.
Book Synopsis The Effect of Passengers on Teen Driver Behavior by : Arthur H. Goodwin
Download or read book The Effect of Passengers on Teen Driver Behavior written by Arthur H. Goodwin and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of studies have shown that passengers substantially increase the risk of crashes for young, novice drivers. This increased risk may result from distractions that young passengers create for drivers. Alternatively, the presence of passengers may increase the likelihood of teenage drivers engaging in explicitly risky behaviors, for example, by actively encouraging drivers to take risks. A better understanding of how transporting peers contributes to young driver increased crash risk will help develop strategies to reduce this risk. NHTSA analyzed data collected through an earlier naturalistic driving study (Goodwin, Foss, Margolis, & Waller, 2010). Over a 6-month study period, event-based data recorders collected 24,085 driving clips, of which 4,466 were selected for analysis. The sample included 52 drivers: 38 newly licensed teens and 14 high-school-age siblings. Risky driving behaviors by teenage drivers were more common while they were driving in the presence of teenage peers. Teenage drivers were two-and-a-half times more likely to engage in one or more potentially risky behaviors when driving with one teenage peer compared to when driving alone. When driving with multiple teenage peers the likelihood increased to 3 times. Some of the mechanisms commonly thought to explain the increased crash risk when carrying passengers were rare, such as instances of deliberate encouragement for the drivers to take risks. Rather, helpful statements on the part of passengers were 10 times more common than statements encouraging risk-taking behavior. These findings suggest the mere presence of peers may have influenced risky driving behaviors more than deliberate encouragement. Several potential distractions were common when teenage peers were present. Loud conversation was 5 times more likely and horseplay was 9 times more likely with multiple teenage passengers in the vehicle compared to when a parent/adult was present. Other distractions, such as loud music and electronic device use, were less common in the presence of passengers. This study had several limitations. First, teens may have changed their driving behavior because of the presence of the data recorders. Second, the sample was small, included a disproportionate percentage of females, and was overrepresented by families with higher-level educations and higher incomes. These sample characteristics suggest caution in generalizing the findings to teenage drivers broadly.
Book Synopsis The Safety of Elderly Drivers by : J. Peter Rothe

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the turn of the century, the elderly will comprise about 20 percent of the population in North America, and 28 percent of those who drive. Place this percentage in high-powered automobiles, and the need for planning and policy development becomes evident. Most standard research on elderly drivers has not gone beyond gathering data on specific situations or characteristics. This book rises beyond simple statistical presentation. It blends sociological insight with statistical detail to produce an absorbing description of the elderly drivers' daily lives, driving styles, experiences with accident and injury, social relationships, and life aspirations. It also describes areas of neglect: imagined and real health problems, driving exposure and traffic violations, accidents, and loss of self-esteem. It presents In-depth accounts of the trauma of loss of license and the Importance of the automobile for sustaining mental, physical, and social well being. The self-Imposed or self-defined rules elderly drivers use to navigate traffic or compensate for physical frailities are described in depth. The Safety of Elderly Drivers Includes penetrating comments from elderly drivers who have been involved in serious accidents, and from random elderly drivers speaking for their generation of drivers. Integrating statistical findings based on Motor Vehicle Department accident data and survey data with comprehensive interviews and discussions with elderly drivers. the book provides an emperically grounded. In-depth view of the elderly driver today. Rothe summarizes theories and models of aging. along with past research on elder[y drivers. projecting what the future may hold If present trends in medicine. housing. politics. migration. and mass transit continue. It closes with a series of recommendations for future traffic planning. This book will be of Interest to policymakers concerned with traffic safety, as well as social scientists and others Interested In gerontological issues.

Book Synopsis Characteristics of Fatal Crashes Involving 16- and 17-Year-old Drivers with Teenage Passengers by : Allan Frank Williams
Download or read book Characteristics of Fatal Crashes Involving 16- and 17-Year-old Drivers with Teenage Passengers written by Allan Frank Williams and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several studies have found that the presence of teenage passengers increases the crash risk of teenage drivers. Most U.S. states now have graduated driver licensing systems that limit the number of passengers that a young driver is allowed to carry in the vehicle during the first several months of licensed independent driving. The objective of this study was to document the proportion of fatal crashes of 16- and 17-year-old drivers in which passengers were present in relation to the age, sex, and number of passengers in the vehicle, and to examine the characteristics of these crashes in relation to specific combinations of passengers. State-by-state summary data are also provided. Data on fatal crashes that occurred in the United States from 2005 through 2010 and involved a 16- or 17-year-old driver of a passenger vehicle (car, pickup truck, van, minivan, or sport utility vehicle) were analyzed.
Book Synopsis Young Driver Research Program by : Wendy A. Macdonald
Download or read book Young Driver Research Program written by Wendy A. Macdonald and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report reviews literature on young drivers' behavioural and personal characteristics in relation to their crash risk. Information is discussed within the framework of a theoretical model in which the major determinants of risk are : drivers' personal characteristics (skill, motivation) and their exposure to crash risk (both quantitative and qualitative factors). The review found that young drivers' skills are less developed than those of older drivers; research is required to define the types and amounts of experience needed to become a 'fully skilled ' driver; that young driver motivation differs in some important ways from that of older drivers; that decisions made prior to driving influence drivers' subsequent exposure to crash risk, independent of their actual driving performance; and that there is insufficient evidence to reach any clear conclusion on the issue of the 'young problem driver '. Book Synopsis Measuring Changes in Teenage Driver Crash Characteristics During the Early Months of Driving by :
Download or read book Measuring Changes in Teenage Driver Crash Characteristics During the Early Months of Driving written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was conducted to determine how and why novice driver behavior changes during the first few years by examining month-to-month changes in various crash characteristics, as compared to the overall pattern of declining crash rates. North Carolina crash data from January 1, 2001 through December 31, 2008 were searched to identify crashes involving any person who had obtained an intermediate license (allowing unsupervised driving) at age 16 or 17 (N = 629,144). All crashes that occurred within the first 36 months after a teen obtained a license (N = 256,975) were included in the analyses. Plots of crash rates per licensed driver for each of the first 36 months of licensing were created, to examine whether certain crash types or characteristics declined more or less quickly. Data were also summarized in several other ways to provide detailed information about how young novice driver crash patterns change during the initial years of driving.

Book Synopsis Driver Behaviour and Accident Research Methodology by : Dr Anders af Wåhlberg
Download or read book Driver Behaviour and Accident Research Methodology written by Dr Anders af Wåhlberg and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses several methodological problems in traffic psychology which are not currently recognized as such. Summarizing and analyzing the available research, it is found that there are a number of commonly made assumptions about the validity of methods that have little backing, and that many basic problems have not been researched at all. Suggestions are made as to further studies that should be made to address some of these problems. The book is primarily intended for traffic/transport researchers, but should also be useful for specialized education at a higher level (doctoral students and transportation specialists) as well as officials who require a good grasp of methodology to be able to evaluate research.
