Book excerpt: The drill-strings used in drilling operate under extreme condi-tions, therefore, an accurate understanding of their dynamics is necessary and has attracted much interest. Although a bottom hole assembly (BHA) is to a great ex- tent responsible for the dynamics of the system, the in uence of the drill-pipes has been increasingly neglected by current models. Their dynamics and geometrical behaviour should be better analysed for a deeper understanding of underlying phe- nomena. For example, under stick-slip oscillations, the torque on the drill-string may cause torsional buckling of the drill-pipes, incurring in helical con guration, in which the apparent length is reduced, a ecting the forces at the bit{rock interface. With such behaviour and interactions in mind, this work focuses on elaborating a comprehensive mathematical model to investigate the dynamics of drill-strings, with attention to the drill-pipes section. Firstly, lower dimensional models are used to analyse the stick-slip limit cycle and its limits of existence. Then, a model developed for MEMS is used as a base for a comprehensive model using the formu- lation of Cosserat rods. Relevant boundary conditions are applied and a numerical simulation procedure is established. Simulations are performed for a range of sce- narios under stick-slip occurrence, and the behaviour of the drill-pipes is analysed. Focus is then given to axial vibrations with bit-bounce and the in uence on stick- slip, later to lateral vibrations with whirling motion of the drill-pipes, and nally to helical con gurations, taken by the drill-string under combined torsional, axial and lateral loads, showing the consequent shortening of the drill-string.

It is focused on the analysis of the system-dynamic response and the elimination of the most damaging drill string vibration modes affecting overall perforation performance: stick-slip (torsional vibration) and bit-bounce (axial vibration). The text is organized in three parts. The first part, Modeling, presents lumped- and distributed-parameter models that allow the dynamic behavior of the drill string to be characterized; a comprehensive mathematical model taking into account mechanical and electric components of the overall drilling system is also provided. The distributed nature of the system is accommodated by considering a system of wave equations subject to nonlinear boundary conditions; this model is transformed into a pair of neutral-type time-delay equations which can overcome the complexity involved in the analysis and simulation of the partial differential equation model. The second part, Analysis, is devoted to the study of the response of the system described by the time-delay model; important properties useful for analyzing system stability are investigated and frequency- and time-domain techniques are reviewed. Part III, Control, concerns the design of stabilizing control laws aimed at eliminating undesirable drilling vibrations; diverse control techniques based on infinite--dimensional system representations are designed and evaluated. The control proposals are shown to be effective in suppressing stick-slip and bit-bounce so that a considerable improvement of the overall drilling performance can be achieved. This self-contained book provides operational guidelines to avoid drilling vibrations. Furthermore, since the modeling and control techniques presented here can be generalized to treat diverse engineering problems, it constitutes a useful resource to researchers working on control and its engineering application in oil well drilling.

Wellbore in such wells spans long horizontal distances through the shale to extract oil and natural gas effectively. Very long slender drill pipes transmit the required torque and cutting force through miles of distance from the earth’s surface to the drill bit. Drill string is subjected to different loads and torques which can cause coupled random excitations and failure of its components (drill pipes, bit, sensor tools and wellbore) eventually. If left unnoticed, these vibrations can cause stuck pipe and reduced rate of penetration, both of which are heavily cost dependent. Identifying the conditions causing harmful vibrations hence would significantly reduce cost and time. Controlling the drill string and bottom hole assembly is one way of mitigating the dynamic instability, which is currently done by means of controlling the rotational speed, torque applied and axial force applied to the drill string. This article presents modeling of horizontal drilling and the comparison of horizontal and vertical drill string dynamics. Drill string components are discretized into lumped elements based on their curvature. A vertical wellbore structure with same drill string components is considered for comparison. The computations are performed in MATLAB. Results and discussions are presented in the later part of the report.

Book excerpt: Continuous models for a fluted twist drill are developed to study its static and dynamic bending characteristics. The static model is numerically simulated within Matlab for point loads at the free end of a twist drill. The bending curves are plotted and the bending stiffness of a twist drill is estimated. Effect of orientation of the spirally fluted cross-section at the fixed end on end deflection is studied. Characteristic bending curves for one pitch length of drill are plotted and region of minimum deflection is identified. Dynamic model is numerically simulated in Matlab over a range of rotating speeds and the first two natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes are identified for the twist drill. New formulation for estimation of work stiffness is proposed considering the interaction of drill with the hole-wall. A new lumped mass model for studying lateral vibration behavior of the twist drill is developed using this work stiffness. The bending stiffness and fundamental natural frequency estimated using continuous models above and work stiffness calculated using proposed formulation are used in this new model. This model is numerically simulated in Matlab for different set of parameters and drill orbital motions are obtained. Results are analyzed to study the influence of various parameters on dynamics of drill and an explanation is given for generation of lobed holes and drill wandering phenomenon and surface roughness. Torsional stiffness of set of twist drills in clockwise and counter clockwise directions are measured experimentally in order to verify the stiffness symmetry. Appearance of cutting resistance when direction of twist coincides with the direction of cutting leads to periodic change in torsional stiffness of the twist drill during actual drilling. Lumped mass model is developed wherein the effect of this periodic change in torsional stiffness on torsional vibration is studied. Numerical simulations are carried out in Matlab for stiffness change of bilinear and combined linear and half sinusoidal nature. Lateral deflection of drill against hole wall is always associated with a small amount of angular twist. Lumped mass model to study bending-torsional coupling is developed. Numerical simulations are carried out in Matlab and results are compared with results for uncoupled torsional model.
