Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gold Dredging in the United States The recovery of gold from sands and gravels is one of the oldest forms of mining; it antedates history and has been practiced by savage peoples. In North America the search for placer gold has been a powerful agency in the exploration and development of unknown regions and has profoundly influenced the course of our civilization. With the progress of invention, the improvements in machinery, and the availability of large capital for the conduct of great operations, the tendency in placer, as in many other branches of mining, has been toward the working of extensive but comparatively low-grade deposits. The early miner washed the rich spots in stream beds or terraces with his pan, his long tom, and his primitive sluice. Then followed the growth of hydraulic mining and the use of giants supplied with water under pressures of hundreds of pounds to the square inch that could work at a profit gravels whose gold tenor was less than 3 cents to the cubic yard. Finally came the dredge that could handle deposits lying so far below water level as to be beyond attack by other methods. Although the gold dredge was first successful on a commercial scale in New Zealand, it has reached its present strength and efficiency in this country and its development is a monument to the daring, per severance and technical skill of the many men, mine owners and engineers who have each contributed something to the final result. The Bureau of Mines, authorized to conduct investigations for the purpose of increasing efficiency in the mineral industries, had its attention called some years ago to the need of a comprehensive report on gold dredging in the United States. The director of the bureau recognized that such a report should summarize the development of the gold dredge, should describe in detail the essential features of present-day dredges, should discuss the facts that determine whether a placer deposit can be profitably dredged, and should point out the approved methods of prospecting placer ground and of operating dredges. The pneumatic caisson was on the principle employed in making cylinders for the piers of bridges. In it, the diver was let down so as to work direct on the bed of the river. This might be all right for a rich patch, the situation Of which was exactly known; but, for men-day work, where much barren stuff had to be lifted, it proved a lamentable failure. Submarine boat, on the principle of the diiing bell, is said to ha\e been con structed, but never used. Dredging operations using the principle of the hydraulic elevator were attempted on the Chestatee River, Lumpkin co., (ia., but proved unsuccessful, the elevator being out of place in a river bed, many feet below the lewl Of the water, Since most of its work consisted in raising water that did not contain gold. The Bazin dredge was one of the first worked on the vacuum system. The principle upon which the vacuum in this machine was obtained lay in the difference of level between the water outside and the bottom of the bull, in consequence of which the water was forced up the suction-pipe projecting down from the hull to the river bed, and in doing SO carried up the auriferous sands. A centrifugal pump re ceived all the matter forced into the tube, and, adding fresh impulse to its progress, delivered it to the washing appliances. A disad vantage Of this form of dredge was that it required a considerable depth of water in order to produce the requisite amount of vacuum for efficient work. This defect led to the introduction of steam vacuum dredges. The boat was fitted with a boiler and steam pump, 0, each connected with a vacuum chamber, from which projected the. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recent Progress in the Thawing of Frozen Gravel in Placer Mining Dredging methods for gold placers and the construction and opera tion of gold dredges were described in Bulletins 121 1 and 127 2 of the Bureau of Mines. The working of frozen gravels, a special problem in placer mining, has received much attention in Alaska and the Yukon Territory, and the methods evolved there are described in this paper. In placer mining in the far North one of the greatest difficulties encountered is the permanently frozen condition of the ground. In the early days of mining the ground was thawed by the primitive method of building wood fires on the surface, at the bottom of a shaft, or at the face of a drift. Although this method was slow and costly, a more effective one was not discovered until about 1898, when Mr. C. J. Berry3 noticed that the steam escaping from the exhaust of a hoisting engine had thawed a hole in the solid muck. Mr. Berry picked up the exhaust pipe (a rubber hose), applied it elsewhere, and found the steam thawed the ice and moss so rapidly as to permit the full length of the hose to penetrate the ground Within a few minutes. Further experiments followed. At first a rifle barrel and then a short piece of iron pipe, pointed at one end, was used for penetrating the ground, rubber hose being attached to convey the steam. The direct application of steam through points proved so effective that it became the chief method adopted in thawing many millions of cubic yards of gravel for drift, surface mining, and dredging operations. As a result of experiments, changes were made in the shape of the steam point, better methods of application were devised, and the best number of points to be used in a unit and the distances at which points should be spaced to get the maximum benefit were determined.
