Book excerpt: What is a dream? Dreams are universal, but their perceived significance and conceptual framework change over time. This book provides new perspectives on the history of dreams and dream interpretation in western culture and thought. Dreams and History contains important new scholarship on Freud's Interpretation of Dreams (1900) and subsequent psychoanalytical approaches from distinguished historians, psychoanalysts, historians of science and anthropologists. This collection celebrates and evaluates Freud's landmark intellectual production, whilst placing it in historical context. A modern view of psychoanalysis, it also discusses the controversial idea of the role of the external world on the shaping of unconscious mental contents. In highly accessible language it proceeds through a series of richly illustrated case studies, providing new source materials and debates about the causes, meanings and consequences of dreams, past and present: from Victorian anthropological exploration of ancient Greek dream sources to peasant interpretation of dream-life in communist Russia; from concepts of the dream in sixteenth-century England to visual images in nineteenth-century symbolist painting in France. Dreams and History will fascinate those interested not only in psychoanalysis and history, but also arts, culture, humanities and literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume centers on dreams in Greek medicine from the fifth-century B.C.E. Hippocratic Regimen down to the modern era. Medicine is here defined in a wider sense than just formal medical praxis, and includes non-formal medical healing methods such as folk pharmacopeia, religion, ’magical’ methods (e.g., amulets, exorcisms, and spells), and home remedies. This volume examines how in Greek culture dreams have played an integral part in formal and non-formal means of healing. The papers are organized into three major diachronic periods. The first group focuses on the classical Greek through late Roman Greek periods. Topics include dreams in the Hippocratic corpus; the cult of the god Asclepius and its healing centers, with their incubation and miracle dream-cures; dreams in the writings of Galen and other medical writers of the Roman Empire; and medical dreams in popular oneirocritic texts, especially the second-century C.E. dreambook by Artemidorus of Daldis, the most noted professional dream interpreter of antiquity. The second group of papers looks to the Christian Byzantine era, when dream incubation and dream healings were practised at churches and shrines, carried out by living and dead saints. Also discussed are dreams as a medical tool used by physicians in their hospital praxis and in the practical medical texts (iatrosophia) that they and laypeople consulted for the healing of disease. The final papers deal with dreams and healing in Greece from the Turkish period of Greece down to the current day in the Greek islands. The concluding chapter brings the book a full circle by discussing how modern psychotherapists and psychologists use Ascelpian dream-rituals on pilgrimages to Greece.

Book excerpt: Set in contemporary Greece, a man and a woman who met briefly decades earlier are mysteriously reunited when a massive storm virtually throws them together. Was it in the power of the ancient Greek Gods to manage the destinies of two very disparate people? As a young girl, Nina dreamt of a prince who would take her to another country. When an international ice skating trainer arrived into her life, her dreams were transformed into reality. After college, she went on her first trip to Greece where she met Dario, a young Portuguese lawyer and fell in love. There she met Demetrios and Penelope, who became her life long friends. A year later she and Dario married. The young couple was happy and looked forward to a bright future when suddenly this dream, like the one in her youth, turned into a terrible nightmare. Some years later she met Alfonso, a Count living in a big castle. A mature love grew between the two and she became his wife. Yet another nightmare occurred when Alfonso died of leukaemia a few years later. At age 35 she was a widow for the second time. Nina decided to return to her favourite Greek island where she stayed at a beautiful hotel on a peninsula owned by her friends Demetrios and Penelope. There, her adventures and those of the other characters in the book continue.

Here are seven tales that explore the themes of materialism, post Cold War politics, love, religious faith, and the power of imagination. In the tradition of Gabriel García Márquez and Luigi Pirandello, Vassilikos writes of the fantasies within reality, the spirit in existence, and the art within life.

Book excerpt: What happens to a family already on the brink of disaster when the world around them crumbles? Dandelions for Dinner presents a memoir set in the sleepy town of Gargaliani, Greece, spanning the last quarter of the nineteenth century through the Greek Civil War of the 1940s. Told through the eyes of a thirteen-year-old boy, it is an epic tale of youth, family, poverty, war, and unjust loss. It is also an uplifting story of how in the midst of calamity, survival is possible by using your head, taking your hits, and maintaining an undying faith. Though it is the tale of a family that is by all standards poor, Dandelions for Dinner demonstrates just how rich the poor can be when they have hope, faith, and love for one anotherwhen they maintain the lessons of their parents and forefathers, nurture a love of education, and never let up on their hope for freedom. This memoir is, above all, a story about the importance of Americanot only for those who live there, but also for all those who reside in the dark corners of faraway lands and dream of a better life. Over the course of their life together, any family will most assuredly experience both want and plenty, suffering and joy. Dandelions for Dinner is the surprising story of what remains when everything else is lost.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Second World War and the German occupation of Greece between the years 1940 and 1941, the author survived for 40 days with no bread, just on some meat and herbs. In March 1947, two thousand guerillas of the Greek Communist Party surrounded the village Argri at 8 oclock in the evening. One guerilla knocked on the door of the authors house. His mother opened the door and saw before her a guerrilla with huge beard and a gun in his hand. The guerilla told the author to follow him. Six hours later, they met up with the rebels brother-in-arms, captain Ypsilntis. The latter put his pistol against the authors head and ordered him to follow him. The authors childhood dream was to go to America. In 1956, that dream came true; he left for the United States. Today, he is a resident of Delray Beach, Florida, where he has been living with his beloved wife, Darlene, for 39 years. He is 90 years old and still going strong. He always thanks God for the good life hes had. He also thanks America for the opportunities it gave him.
