Book excerpt: Departing from earlier studies which regarded incest as a literary topos or dramatic metaphor foregrounding political, social, or legal issues, Words and Deeds: The Spectacle of Incest in English Renaissance Tragedy argues that the presence of incest on the Renaissance stage is a strategy for the enactment of the spectator’s tragic experience. Incest is explored neither as a sin nor as a crime, but as an “unspeakable” experience filtered through dramatic words and deeds. The incitement of desire, visual pleasure, and unconscious fantasy, as well as traumatic rejection, pain, and horror, are all aspects of this paradoxical and uncanny experience. Aristotelian theory of tragedy, Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalysis, and Michel Foucault’s notions of the deployment of sexuality and alliance, concur in the analysis of plays where incest is a central or a secondary motif – Ford’s ’Tis Pity She’s a Whore, Beaumont and Fletcher’s Cupid’s Revenge, Webster’s The Duchess of Malfi – and others where incest is an effect of language and mise-en-scène – Sackville and Norton’s Gorboduc, Shakespeare’s King Lear. The variety of topics and the combination of critical perspectives makes In Words and Deeds an attractive book for students and teachers of Renaissance drama, as well as for those with a special interest in psychoanalytic and other new theoretical approaches to the literary text.

Book excerpt: In these turbulent times of COVID-19, when many leaders in government, business, and other positions of power behave as though greed is good, lying is laudable, and corruption is commendable, should we expect ethical behavior from them or from each other? What are we willing to tolerate or not tolerate? Does our worldview align with our core values? How do we conduct ourselves? How do we view our creativity and worth? Through easy-to-understand poetic messages, Everyday Ethics and Equity: The Foundation for Character and Self-Esteem motivates us to think critically about contemporary ethical issues and self-valuing concepts. Like its predecessor, Dreams, Deeds, and Destiny: Purpose and Possibility in the Space Age, this insightful book is written from a cosmic perspective and a humanist worldview. Reasonable and relevant, it helps us to align thoughts and acts with core values and gain a greater appreciation for our innate worth. Designed to evoke critical thought and self-reflection, it is a must have in every individual home and institution.

Visions of service, excellent programs, and capable personnel are not enough to keep the ship of the church on course if spirit is lacking. In 'Keeping the Dream Alive', Robert D. Dale skillfully analyzes the various factors that determine congregational morale. Using the metaphor of weather, he discusses such subjects as steering currents, seeding the clouds, prevailing winds, and long-range forecasting. The result is a book characterized by depth and practicality. If you are struggling to keep your congregation on course in fulfilling its mission, this book will be an invaluable resource for 'Keeping the Dream Alive'.

Whether one's goal is understanding the permeability of traditions and modernities or the changing shape of religious imagination and thought in one of the most pivotal countries of the Middle East, this book is an outstanding point of departure."—Dale F. Eickelman, author of The Middle East and Central Asia: An Anthropological Approach, 4th ed. "Dreams That Matter is an insightful and well-crafted study of the practice of dreaming in contemporary Egypt. Mittermaier provides a superb analysis of the imaginative repertoires of Islamic traditions and shows how the dream has remained not only a site of Muslim scholarly interest, but an important part of the way ordinary Muslims encounter and engage with the divine."—Charles Hirschkind, author of Powers of the Secular Modern: Talal Asad and His Interlocutors "Amira Mittermaier has given us the most complete anthropological study of dream culture in the Middle East—perhaps in any culture. It is a sensitive, intellectually challenging, indeed a courageous, investigation of the psychological, ontological, and ethical assumptions that lie behind dreams, visions, and dream-visitations in contemporary Egypt—where the dream is a vibrant site of political, religious, and interpretive contest. Dreams That Matter will rank among the most important contributions to the anthropology of the imagination for years to come."—Vincent Crapanzano, author of The Harkis: The Wound That Never Heals

Book excerpt: Evoking epic poems of a long-gone age, Three Dreams of the World's Creation and Soledad: Letters to My Daughter presents a three-part novella in free verse that provides an interpretation of the beginning of mankind. Author juanantoñio first addresses the creation of man and woman and their struggle for love and destiny against an ancient, selfish god. The second dream follows the story of guarionex, a taino chief who shapes the identity of his people and then makes first contact with Europeans. In the third dream, juanantoñio introduces Maria, an upper west side Latina who is guided by the spirit of guarionex in her struggle with three angels who try to seduce her with love, power, and then destiny. "Soledad: Letters to my daughter" narrates a series of communications from a father separated from his daughter by time and distance. Filled with vivid and powerful imagery, the verse of Dreams of the World's Creation and Soledad: Letters to My Daughter speak to the themes of love, identity, man and woman, destruction, creation, time, and destiny.

Book excerpt: Popular in its day both as a sourcebook for writers and orators and as a guidebook for living a moral life, this remarkably rich document serves as an engaging introduction to the cultural and moral history of ancient Rome. Valerius' "thousand tales" are arranged thematically in ninety-one chapters that cover nearly every aspect of life in the ancient world, including such wide-ranging topics as military discipline, child rearing, and women lawyers. As a whole, the work gives the reader fascinating insights into what it felt like to be an ancient Roman, what the ancient Romans really believed, what their private world was like, how they related to one another, and what they did when nobody was watching.
